Shockers Welcome UCF, USF to Charles Koch Arena

The UCF Knights, who were picked as the preseason favorites in The American, enter the weekend at 12-6 overall and 5-1 in conference action after winning at USF, 3-1, and sweeping Memphis at home, 3-0, Oct. 11 and 13...Through 18 matches, the Knights are paced by reigning American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore outside hitter McKenna Melville (284 kills, 4.24 kills/set, 16 aces, 197 digs, seven block solos, 20 block assists), senior setter Erin Olson (374 assists, 5.67 assists/set, 171 digs, 2.59 digs/set), redshirt senior libero/DS Makenzie Kuchmaner (236 digs, 3.52 digs/set, 88 assists) and redshirt junior middle blocker Nerissa Moravec (62 kills, seven block solos, 77 block assists, 1.31 blocks/set)...UCF leads the conference in blocking (2.88 block/set), and ranks second in hitting percentage (.270)...Individually, Melville is second in The American in kills...The Knights are under the direction of 11th season head coach Todd Dagenais.

    About USF
The USF Bulls enter the week at 7-13 overall and 1-5 in The American after dropping a pair of home matches to UCF, 3-1, and SMU, 3-1, Oct. 11 and 13...Through 20 matches, the Bulls are led by sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Pilapol (246 kills, 3.19 kills/set, 10 aces, 164 digs, one block solo, 24 block assists), sophomore setter Lauren LaBeck (468 assists, 7.43 assists/set, 18 aces, 124 digs), sophomore defensive specialist CC Clausen (320 digs, 4.16 digs/set, 73 assists, 23 aces) and freshman middle blocker Ally Barnhart (74 kills, five block solos, 62 block assists, 1.10 blocks/set)...USF was picked to finish sixth in The American preseason poll...The Bulls are under the leadership of eighth season head coach Courtney Draper.

I put the Shocks chances against UCF as very slim. The Shocks have a much better chance of picking up a win against USF but far from a slam dunk. In their last 3 matches USF has taken a set in losses to Cincinnati, UCF and SMU. Cincy and SMU swept the Shockers and there is a good chance UCF will sweep on Friday as well.

I wouldn't know Pablo from Giovanni. But Pablo seems to be a pretty smart guy.

Shocks played a decent 1st set and pulled out a 25-23 win. UCF won the next 3 sets 19, 11 and 23. After a very poor 3rd set the Shockers showed some fight before falling 23-25 in set 4.

Bottom line is that the Shocks simply could not natch the fire power of UCF plus the Shockers continue to play high error volleyball. UCF's attack error rate was 11.8% compared to the Shocks at 21.4%. That's hard to overcome when you have a firepower advantage. Impossible when you don't. UCF outhit the Shocks .287 to .121.

Maybe the one bright spot in the match for the Shocks was Freshman Sophia Rohling who struggled mightily against Tulane but had a somewhat repsectable 6-2-14 = .286 attack line which was a big improvement over last weekend vs Tulane.

USF will be in the house on Sunday. They were swept at Tulsa tonight 14, 13 and 22.

Five Shocker blocks and five UCF service errors played a big part in this set.

Yeah that first set was a little if not a lot of fool's gold. Pretty good idea in the 1st five points of set 2 that UCF decided that's enough of that.

Still just can't believe how much we're struggling.

Not noted yet, but the Shocks went with a 6-2 in this match with Mckayla and Kayce doing the setting. We set the middle more often than recently I think, making several good connections with Brooke. Brylee struggled in this match and from her hand motions, I thought she wasn't getting a lot of sets she was comfortable with - wanted them further outside. Or maybe she just has a nervous tic. :) Sina and Nicole played the fourth set with Brylee and Sophia sitting from the first three sets. A late rally made the fourth set appear closer than it was, although you appreciate the fight in the ladies that made the score close.

One other thing from the UCF match. Saw the all-time great performance on the pep band drums by WuShock.

Shocks roll in Game 1 over USF 25-10.

                          17-0-30 = .583. Not kidding.

Shocks in a 6-2 with Kayce and Kora setting. I don't see McKayla on the bench. Illness maybe?

Shocks pull away late for a 25-19 win in set 2. Not quite as good as set 1 but still only 1 attack error. Megan has been terrific at 12-0-25. Damadg is 6-0-6. Sophia and Brooke solid as well. Brulee 2-1-13 and Chinelo 0-0-5 not clicking so far.

Setting has been okay but still not great.

                              Defense has been good.
