  • Shocks On The Road @ Missouri State

The Shocks take on their travel partner, Missouri State, this Friday in Springfield. The match begins at 6:00 pm and is the only match of the weekend.

The Shocks had one of their poorest and least inspired efforts of the season earlier in the year as the Bears swept the Shocks in Koch Arena.

The Shocks will have to be on their A game to win in Springfield. A win would be a big plus on the Shocks NCAA at-large resume.

Paul Suellentrip reported on the Shocks RPI status today in the Eagle. The Shock are currently No. 47 in th RPI. MSU is No. 32. UNI who the Shocks take on the following weekend is No. 5.

If the Ladies can't get motivated for the next couple of weeks they will never get motivated.

This is going to be an interesting match. The girls were uninspired and overwhelmed by the Bares a few weeks ago in Wichita. I would be so surprised to see them not intimidated but then there was the UNI match where they were just the opposite.

I expected the ladies to easily sweep the Bares here, and instead the Shocks were swept. I have no clue now (obviously didn't then either).

I really wish I could make the trip but, alas, I cannot. Best of luck ladies!

Even if the Lady Shocks play well in this match they could still lose it. I can live with a loss to a quality team if the Ladies battle them. The loss in Wichita was just dispiriting to watch simply because we just seemed so passive. Not sure what happened to us in Evansville. Was it us or did Evansville just play lights out? Evansville did give MSU a good battle the following night also.

Time to reveal our true character. Let's git 'er dun, Ladies.

I was only able to catch bits and pieces of tonight's radio broadcast and I did catch a good portion of Lambo's post game comments.

I had hoped to get filled in on ShockerNet. Not to be I guess.

After toughing out Set 1 it sounds like the Shocks just got blitzed in Set 2. In his post game interview Lambo said that during the half time break he asked the Ladies what the deal was -- were they just all talk. I guess that must have worked as they came out and took both Sets 3 and 4. I'll have to look at the box score to get a feel for who played well, but Lambo indicated he still wasn't real enthusiastic about the team's defense. Lambo also said something about the lineup changes he had made and that he needed to talk with his team about that because if they weren't able to buy into those changes it just wasn't going to work. Anyone know what those lineup changes were? I was a little surprised he wasn't more upbeat after what really was a big win.

Anytime you come out of Springfield with a win you have to feel pretty darn good about it IMHO. A big first step for the Shocks to polish up their NCAA resume. UNI is on the horizon next Saturday at Koch Arena. Hopefully, Shocker fans will respond with a huge showing.

Way to go Lady Shocks. A really big win.

Wow! I see the Shocks out-blocked the Bears 17-7. Obviously it wasn't that aspect of the Shocks defense that Lambo was not totally enamored with. Ashley, Camri, Elizabeth and Hoop leading the way in that department.

Looks like Camri, Emily, Elizabeth and Ashley lead the offense. Camri leade the way with 15 kills but also 7 errors on 47 attacks (.170). Emily only had 9 kills but was much more efficient as she only made 1 error on her 22 attacks (.364). Elizabeth and Ashley were also pretty efficient in the middle with combined line of 14-4-32 for a combined .313 hitting percentage. Holding Kelly Michnowicz to 8-6-24 = .083 is pretty solid work also.

Kind of a strange set of stats in a 3-1 win. MSU had 50 kills to 37 for the Shocks and outscored the Shocks 67-61. The Bears also had 3 aces to 5 service errors compared to 0 aces and 7 service errrors for the Shocks. They also out-dug the Shocks 61 -38. The lopsided 2nd Set may have a lot to do with this odd set of stats. MSU did have 33 attack errors to only 14 for the Shocks which partially reflects the Shocks dominating blocking effort.

The bottom line is that the Ladies found a way to pull out a big win against a very good volleyball team on the road.

Agree, it is very good to leave Springfield with a match win. Listened to the game and we really need to get this figured out now. Too many good players on this team to be so inconsistant. Must have some head issues to work on. We just need to execute, we have the talent. We need to finish this league play strong and actually win the tournament. Come on ladies, we believe in you, why don't you believe?

One of the changes made was to move Camri to the L1 and move Adney to the L2. Also after the second game Jackie wore the Libero shirt and Waldo was a DS. Something was changed with the middles and Sam but I am not clear how that lined up. You are so right that we have the talent; we have all seen what they can do. However Lambo's constant changing and moving the girls around has to send the message that what they are doing isn't good enough. If you look at what UNI does its the same old thing but they do it very well. They are given the time to fine tune it and expand on it. Plus you don't see their coach yank/pull them after they make a couple of mistakes. By leaving them in she is showing them that she believes in them. Have you ever sat behind the bench and heard what is said to our girls. You might have a little more respect for the kind of pressure they are under during a match. It can't be that easy.

Perhaps the 13-0 run MSU put on the Shocks in Set 2 over-tempered Lambo's view of what otherwise seemed to be a very solid effort by the Lady Shocks. It was unlikely that we would go into Springfield and sweep MSU anyway and it really doesn't matter if you lose that set 25-11 or 25-23 as long as you can bounce back the next set. The Shocks not only bounced back the next set but finished off the night with a very strong effort in Set 4 in a hostile environment. That reflects on this team very well IMHO. The 2nd set is just one of those things that happens in sports from time to time. You take what you can from it, if anything, then move on. The Shocks did that very well. I wonder if any of Lamb's teams have ever given up a 13-0 run in the rally-scoring era. The great thing is that the Shocks rendered that bizarre stretch irrelevant.

Now it is time for Shocker Nation to show its stuff. We really need to be on hand and get behind the Ladies next Saturday in Koch Arena as the #12 ranked UNI Panthers visit. We can get this done.

MVC scores for Friday, October 21:

Drake 3, Evansville 1 in Des Moines 26-24, 25-17, 17-25, 25-18 (How the heck did we lose to Evansville?)
UNI 3, Illinois State 1 in Cedar Falls 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 (Looks like the Redbirds game UNI a competitive match)
Bradley 3, Indiana State 1 in Peoria 25-27, 25-20, 26-24, 25-18 (Battle of the Bottom Feeders)
Creighton 3, SIU 2 in Omaha 25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 25-13, 15-12 (Close but no cigar for the Salukis)
Wichita State 3, MIssouri State 1 in Springfield 25-22, 11-25, 25-23, 25-17 (Only road win of the weekend)

No sweeps. Somewhat unusual. Too bad SIU could not pull the upset.

Five step program for the final 9 MVC regular season matches:

Step 1 - Revenge the home loss to the Bears. Done

Step 2 - Finish the job this time around against UNI after taking care of Bradley on Friday.

Step 3 - Must win over Creighton in Omaha.

Step 4 - Win all remaining matches where we will be favored - @ Drake, SIU, Evansville, @ ILS and @ INS

What we will need to do in the MVC Tournament will depend on how successful we are in acheiving these goals.
