  • Final Lambo Radio Show of 2017

Regarding the Missouri match Lambo said that when he looks across the net and thinks he sees better athletes who are playing well he can accept the outcome. That said he noted that clearly there were two plays that could have won 4th set for the Shocks and a 5th set would been interesting but he has no regrets. Said he is super proud of Wichita for showing up. He always told people on the committees he has been on that if you they ever intend to put these events in places that would draw that Wichita would be one of those places.

Came out of the Spring training a system that he tried up to and through the Temple game but decided it wasn't workig as well as they thought it would at which time they sort of went back to some basics. Once he put Abbie back in the middle, did some different things with Mikaela and committed to Alex they were a different and better team than what Oregon, Cal Poly and Iowa State saw in there 3 losses. It was just a lot easier for Abbie to just do what she does and then learn to hit the slides. They were trying Abbie on the right side and while it was good it wasn't great and created some other issues that were resolved when they put her back in the middle. That made the team more complete and elite at Abbie's spot and that lineup only got beat once.

Lambo used to always say that Chelsey Feekin, one of the greatest players we ever had at WSU, was the most low-maintenance star he has ever known and you can add 3 more to the list in Emily, Abbie and Mikaela. They just make the world a better place.

Talked about Abbie's recruitment which we have discussed on this board before. On the same list as Sara Lungren in terms or rags to riches on the volleyball court.

Several coaches in the AAC voted Emily as player of the year. The Oregon coach said he would not see a better setter this year. Lambo said she was an athlete at the setter position who learned to be a setter. Apparently Emily's setting technique is a bit unorthodox and Lambo said she wouldn't be the one he would take to a clinic and say do it this way but athletes make plays and the ball was getting to where it was supposed to. He told his new freshman setter Kora Kauling not to stand behind Emily and watch because I don't want you doing it that way. The ball gets into her hands and out of her hands in good shape and gets to where it is supposed to go even though maybe some weird things happen with her hands seconds before and after that but she has it figured out and she knows her hands and her game. With Emily he focused on decision making and match planning and never had to worry about her becoming distracted if she was having an off day.

Mikaela's club coach told Lambo that she wasn't good enough to play for him but he learned what a great person she was and wanted her. Mikaela is one the most considerate persons he has ever known in addition to being a very fine volleyball player. He has previously called Mikaela the ultimate team Mom.

During the final segment of the show Lambo discussed the challenges that he will face next year filling the holes left by this senior class. Will return a few starters (Tabitha, Alex and Giorgia). He has a freshman class that he thinks is as complete and ready to go as any he has had in quite sometime and some of them might be starting. He has an unnamed transfer coming in at the semester who he thinks may be a starter next year. Kora Kauling is apparently the heir apparent to Emily. About a month ago the coaches thought that if they would play Megan Taflinger they would be a better team but she wanted to redshirt at that point and being that far into the season and the team was doing well so they decided to leave the redshirt on. He said he hopes Megan will prove to be a valuable 6 rotation right side player. He also mentioned that incoming freshman recruit Grace Burken fits the M-1 role (Abbie's position) walking in the door as well as anyone since Darci Vohs.

Not sure where to stick this but it pretty much aligns with comments made during Lambo's final radio show.

"All eyes were on Wichita, and Wichita hit a home run," Shocker coach Chris Lamb said. "Those games happened in our gym with 7,000 people. I want everybody to know about it."
The 2018 Shockers will look dramatically different without the four-season combination of Lehman in the middle working with Hiebert as a scoring constant. Lamb wanted those two Newton friends and Raudsepp at the season's final media session to represent the team. He called them low-maintenance superstars. In addition to the conference title, they also helped the Shockers win the American's Team Academic Excellence Award for the highest cumulative grade-point average.

"These guys – they were like freshmen trying to learn for four years," Lamb said. "Amazing people. How to replace? I don't know. I promise you I'll try."
Lambo also talked about which of his returning players could have an impact next year. However, he didn't comment on the incomeing freshman class and the transfer he said would be coming this coming spring semester.
Lamb said he expects attacker Megan Taflinger, who also redshirted, to replace some of the departing points.   "We are huge Megan Taflinger fans," Lamb said. "Explosive. Live arm. Proving to be as good learner."
