  • Shockers Go For 20-0 -- Senior Day

After their dominating sweep and championship clinching win over 2nd place SMU today the Shockers chances of running the table in their inaugural AAC season has become increasingly probable as they only have back-to-back matches against their travel partner Memphis Tigers to finish the season. The Shockers (26-3, 18-0) will be heavy favorites over the Tigers (10-20, 3-15) who are tied for last place in the AAC.

The Shocks look to go 19-0 on Wednesday when they visit the Tigers in Memphis for a 1:00 pm match. After returning to Wichita for Thanksgiving day, the Shocks will host Memphis at Koch Arena on Friday at 1:00 pm.

On the surface these seem like two somewhat meaningless matches that the Shock most likely will win. However, I believe there is good reason for Shocker fans to turn out en masse for Friday's home match to close out the regular season.

While playing the two final matches against a poor Memphis team will hurt the Shockers RPI the Shocks are still in the hunt for NCAA hosting possibilities. A huge crowd to close out the season would certainly be a good message to show the NCAA selection committee that Shocker fans deserve a hosting opportunity.

More importantly it is Shocker Senior Day and what a group of seniors. Emily Hiebert, Abbie Lehman, Mikaela Raudsepp, Hanna Shelton, Gabi Mostrom, Jenny Whitledge and Kara Maleski. These ladies have been part of 97 Shocker victories (and counting) over the past 4 years and will be participating in their 3rd consecutive NCAA Tournament this year. The careers of Emily and Abbie pretty much speak for themselves. Two future Shocker Hall of Famers I would think. Mikaela has been a bit up and down in her career but has been a great team leader and she seems to be playing the best volleyball of her career here at the end of her final season. Hanna and Gabi have toiled away in the important but somewhat unglamorous role of defensive specialist and have done it to the very best of their abilities. Jenny Whitledge suffered a devastating leg injury at the beginning of last year just when it appeared she was coming into her own. She made a valiant effort to come back this year but just could not get it going again and did not play very much nor has Kara Maleski played much in her career. However, that doesn't mean that Jenny and Kara were not important contributors this year. They certainly did have positive behind the scenes impact on this team. Jenny in particular had to have a very inspiring effect on her teammates. Kara is a Junior in eligibility but will be like most of the Shocker volleyball players is an outstanding student and will be earning her degree this semester. She took her role of bring energy and enthusiasm to practice very seriously.

Finally, you just don't get that many chances to be at a Shocker sporting event where a Shocker team has the opportunity to finish a conference season undefeated. Surely every Shocker fan will want to be able to say I was there rooting the Shockers on when the Shockers completed their first season in the AAC with an undefeated conference season.

I for one will be quite disappointed if we can't get a crowd of at least 4,000 out to Koch Arena on Friday (regardless of whether or not the Shocks win on Wednesday) to support this team and this group of coaches and to honor this wonderful class of seniors. A great chance for Shocker Nation to show what they are really made of.

Incredibly special, if not unique, moments like this demand attention and gratitude.

This kind of run doesn't come around often and I too hope many will take a few moments to come out and show your appreciation to this outstanding program.

They demolished SMU today and that is an understatement.
Extremely impressed to watch them live and look forward to their continued success.

I hope our local media outlets will help get the word out about this game. Casual fans won't show up if they don't know about the game.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

Speaking of which, the Shockers are 10th in attendance with an average of 2664. Eleventh place Illinois trails by 25 but has finished their home schedule. Being in the 10th spot is an improvement over recent years (when we still remained in the top 15), and I think moving to a new conference had a lot to do with that.

I think moving to the AAC probably has helped attendance some. However, I have previously pointed out that declines in our attendance in recent years coincided directly with the availability of our games on ESPN3 even though that produced little to no revenue for the Vallley schools. Now that has gone away attendance is back up. Hard to know for sure what is driving the increase in attendance but whatever it is it is good to see.

That would be nice. However, the Eagle reported after the Tulsa game that the Shocker's completed their AAC schedule against SMU today.

Nice articel by Taylor Eldridge on the Shockers' run through the AAC and the Shocker seniors. I assume this was long distance journalism because I think Taylor is in Maui covering the Shocker men's basketball team. So much better than the drivel put out byu the Eagle Staff the other day.

                    :encouragement:

I really like Taylor's reporting. However, just to be my picky self Emily's career assist total is 4,831 not the 4,821 he reported. I will give Taylor a pass on that and chalk it up to a missed the right key by a spot (which I do regularly) and perhaps lingering jet lag.

I would absolutely love to see Emily reach the 5,000 career assists mark before she is through. She is 169 assist short of that mark. It would probably take her at least 15 sets to reach that mark. Most likely she will only get 6 sets in against Memphis over the next 2 matches. That means she would need 9 sets in the NCAA Tournament. That could happen over 2 matches but I would love it if it took 3.

If Emily can reach that mark it means a tremendous finish to the carreers of this Shocker senior class.

Do have a link to the attendance rankings?

According to the stats on GoShockers.com the Shocks have total home attendance of 27,394 over 10 home matches which would be an average of 2,739, However, when you add up the total attendance per the individual match box scores it is 26,642 resulting in the reported 2,664 average.

Assuming all the teams ahead of us stay ahead of us the Shocks need somewhere close to 2,395 fans to attend Friday's match to stay ahead of Illinois.

Hopefully, we will do much better than that but that would be the 6th best crowd of the year so who knows how Shocker fans will respond on a Holdiay weekend.

As Lambo has stated looking at volleyball statitstical records and comparing players is diffiucult because all of the rules changes over the years that impat that. You had the sideout era throug the year 2000. You then had the 30-point rally scoring era from 2001 to 2007 and then in 2008 went to the current the 25 point rally scoring matches. I believe both of these were done to improve fan interest in the game and I think they have been successful. And then in 2002 the Libero position was introduced into the College game.

Nevertheless some of our Shocker Seniors are reaching notable milestones.

Emily Heibert, as has been reported, is now the career total assist leader.having just passed Mary Elizabeth Hooper in yesterday's championship clinching win over SMU. Mary Elizabeth still is #1 in carreer average assists per set at 10.642 to Emily's 10.641. However, Emily is averaging 11.43 kills per set this year so she still has a chance to pass Mary Elizabeth in that category as well. Emily's season average of 11.43 kills per set this year would be 3rd all-time just ahead of Mary Elizabeth's 11.22 in 2009 and behind Abby Harsh's 11.89 in 2006 and 12.65 in 2007. Not to diminish Abby's 2 great years but she here is where the rule changes impact the comparison's. Abby played in the 30-point rally socring error. Emily and Elizabeth in the 25-point rally scoring era. Abby probalby would be the career assists leader if she had not shared setting duties with Andee Hartig in the 6-2 offense Lambo ran in Abby's first two years. BTW, Abby Harsh came to Wichita State from, yes your guessed it, Newton High School.

Emily is currently #6 on a career hitting list lead by the powerful left-handed strikes of Chesley Feekin on a Top 10 list that is mostly populated with middle blockers. Emily has 100 career aces and will end in the Top 15 or 20 in that category. She has 1,097 digs which is just out of the Top 10 carreer list in tht category but is probably #1 all-time at her position. Not where her 259 total blocks puts her but that is a category dominated by middle blockers. I suspect 259 may well be the best ever by a setter.

Abbie Lehman is currently #5 in kills having just past Sara Younes recently. She trails Emily Stockman by 38 kills and has a chance to pass Emily. Of course, Emily's totals were accumulated in 3 years as she played her 1st year at Winthrop. However, the top 10 career total kills list appears to be cominated by outside hitters and 6 of the top 10 totals are fromt he side-out era when sets could go on forever.

Abbie also moved passed Elizabeth Myers (who played in the 30-point rally scoring era) in total blocks. Abbie now has 515 total blocks. Abbie is 6th in career total solo blocks but that list is domianted by the side-out era players. Also, I can guarantee you that Abbie was the primary blocker on a very high percenage of her block assists. Abbie is currently #4 in career average for blocks per set.

Abbie is currently 2nd in career hitting percentage at 0.407 trailing only Chelsey Feekin's 0.431 but Abbie has many more attempts than Chelsey had plus stopping Abbie has had to be a primary point of emphasis for opposing defenses during her career.

Mikaela Raudsepp is 2 digs short of joining the 1,000 kill/500 digs club and she should get that agaisnt Memphis this week. Mikaela's 1,045 kills put her just 48 kills shy of the career Top 10 total kills list. She may fall just short of that and perhaps can thank the concussion she suffered as freshman when hit in the head with a warm-up serve at Evansville causing her to miss a handful of matches.

Not sure where these ladies stand in how many winning matches they participated in during their careers but the teams they played on have won 97 matches and counting and I suppose that is the most important stat of them all.

Obviously playing our final two games agaisnt Memphis is not such a good deal for our RPI and is probably not the best preparation for the quality of teams the Shocks will face in the NCAA Tournament. However, perhaps it will give Lambo a chance to work on what is probably the biggest weakness of this team and that is the #2 MB position. That has been a challenge all year. Emma Wright has had some decent matches but had a set back with her concussion. She was pretty good on Friday at Tulsa hitting 6-1-13 = 0.385 with 3 block assists but was not good on Sunday against SMU when she was 1-2-9 = -0.111 with 1 block assist.

Perhaps Lambo will be able to use the final two matches to try to build Emma's confidence and consistency before NCAA play starts.

I calculate that we need an attendance of 2398 to keep us in tenth place.

I get 2,383. We are at 26,642. That would put us at 29,025 over 11 games for an average of 2,638.64.

Illinois is at 23,747 over 9 games for 2,638.56.

A crowd of 2,382 would put us at 2,638.55.

And now the data has changed since both you and I last looked at it.

Illinois is at 28,306 for 11 matches for an average of 2573. Their last home match is against Iowa on Wednesday. One previous home conference match (Northwestern) this season had an attendance of 1755. Once this match is played, we will know for sure what the Shockers will need to remain in the Top 10 in attendance.

Glad you found the data. I had forgotten until I just did it again how many "fill-in-the-blanks" there were, even given the right starting place.
