  • Big change coming to recruiting??

The Conference Commissioners Association voted 31-0 at its fall meeting last month in Chicago to recommend eliminating July men's basketball recruiting beginning in 2012 to the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, sources said.

The open July periods may be eliminated. The April period is already gone. It sounds to me this would pretty much wipe out coaches seeing recruits during AAU play. As pointed out in the article, evaluations would occur during the college and the high school season. IMO it would be impossible to have anywhere near the current numbers of player evaluations that are currently being done by our staff.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this. I think I understand the thoughts from the NCAA and there is a ton of contact made during the year, but AAU is where you get to see the best go against the best and that really helps evaluations for schools. And it may actually be more critical to schools not in the elite group that don't recruit nothing but Top 100 talent.

This would kill recruiting for mid-majors.

That was my thinking as well but didn't want to jump into that drastic a statement until I woke up more and could really think it thru.

A 31-0 vote...whoa...Doug Elgin voted for this???There is something very fishy about this issue. Why would the NABC be hearing about this from someone who knows someone who heard it from their gardener. Just sayin!!!

That caught me as well. The NABC members sound quite unhappy about this and I don't blame them. I'm not sure how this will play out but we can be sure that the coaches aren't going to give in without a heck of a fight. And I hadn't even thought about the increased cost of recruiting by doing this until I actually read the article. That will really hurt those schools with smaller budgets.

I seem to recall comments from a lot of coaches, mid-majors included, that they didn't like the summer evaluation periods, but that they had participate or get left behind.

When the NCAA has to send individuals to these events just to walk around and make sure there is no contact between coaches and players, they need to do something.

The significance of AAU ball will take a major hit, as well.

I think a lot of those comments were about rules not being enforced and some coaches taking advantage of that and breaking the rules. I can't imagine that they'd want to do away with it all completely as it is the best opportunity to evaluate talent and it is more cost effective.

I don't recall who said it, but I thought there were coaches, or maybe it was a player, who said they (the coach) would prefer to be around campus during the summer when the new recruits were arriving to play summer pick up games. I know they can't hold official practice but I thought some said they'd like the one on one (get to know the player) time.

On second thought, I think that was from a national article where the coaches were not named. Someone help me out here.

The game of basketball has issues at every level of play. From a grassroots perspective, life certainly could be better and there are many who would be amenable to some form of change.

Telep brings up some good points in the above article. I hadn't even thought of a few of those things.

Wouldn't this lead to more infractions? Like Telep brings up, AAU events are heavily monitored by the NCAA, but who's going to be at the HS gym when the coach shows up to chat?

I'm going out on a limb here but I think more rules and regulations = rewards for coaches who have no problems breaking the current rules. It's like gun control, you are only penalizing those who obey the law.

I can see limiting contact, but if the kid is out of class, why not be able to evaluate?

College basketball coaches aren't ready to give up their summer recruiting road trips.
