  • Ross Travis to Penn State

Ross Travis confirms that WSU is recruiting him. He is a 6-7 SF at Chaska, MN. Rivals ranks him as #133 and Minnesota Preps has him as #1 in the State. He currently has 6 offers: Rice, Oregon State, Iowa State, North Dakota State, Santa Clara and Northern Iowa.

Interested are WSU, Iowa, Stanford, Minnesota, Georgetown, Kansas, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Colorado State, Purdue, American, Liberty, Ball State, Penn, Gonzaza, Wisconsin-Green Bay.

WSU, Butler and Missouri State will be seeing him in open gym this week.

He is a HS teammate of another WSU recruit, Jake White. We have also shown interest in several of his 43 Hoops AAU teammates.

With Ed Dechellis leaving Penn State for Navy, Jake White's HS teammate's future is currently unclear.

I'd be ok with him wanting to play with Jake

I've always thought Travis has just as much, or perhaps more potential as White. He's had medical problems with his back that have hindered him and are perhaps a concern for his future.

I wasn't aware of the medical issues. A bad back would be a concern (Chris Brown) but his potential could very well be worth it.

At least something to think about.

I watched him play twice and I can tell you that he is a very nice athlete and handles the ball really well for a guy his size.

Jake White, 6'8", 215 lbs, Power Forward
He is skilled offensive player who has made strides on the defensive end.

Ross Travis, 6'7", 195 lbs, Small Forward
He comes from a basketball family and has plenty of potential, but needs to stay healthy.

With Ben Smith (senior), Evan Wessel (freshman) and Ede Egharevba (freshman) at SF and Carl Hall (junior) and Jake White (freshman) at PF, do we have a greater need for a SF or a PF? (I'm not sure if Wessel will play the SF or PG position (his shooting might need to improve to play SG) but I can see him in Hatch's role in 2012-13 or later.)

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Wessel has the ability to play the 2 or 3 and maybe even the 1. I doubt this happens, but another guard/forward type wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Especially this late in the game when options are much fewer.

We will get the best guy that we can get, and let them fight for PT. Winner plays, loser sits or splits. Get used to it.

Is a guy with a bad back in HS and 20 lbs lighter than Jake White "the best guy that we can get"?

I don't know but I believe he is, unlike Jake, a true SF. If he does opt out of Penn State, I would not count on us being able to get him. We appeared to drop out of his recruitment pretty early on.

Plans for Travis are still unkown.

Edit- I still believe he is doubtful for WSU even if he doesn't end up a Penn State.
