  • Bryce Mayes

Anybody have info on this kid? I know he is a 6-2 shooting guard from Oxford that has put up some ridiculous numbers this year. Help please.
Because Denny Crane says so Dammit!

I found this article about him:

He averaged 21 ppg last year.

Also from a Varsity Kansas blog:

I am glad someone is watching Bryce Mayes at Oxford. This kid has such a sweet stroke and has the long arms that make him a pretty good defender.

I officiated a game down at Oxford a week or two ago. He does have a nice touch from deep. I'm not positive on how good he is all around as the team plays a very fast and up-tempo style that gives them A LOT of possessions. And the team they were playing was very weak.

I would like to see them play against a decent team to get a better feel for them as a whole though.

Bryce was listed in the Eagle as the highest scoring High Schooler in Kansas as he scored 33 points his last game.

But he is also playing in a league that is even a joke for small schools. He probably wouldn't be averaging close to that at a good 1-2A league.

I haven't seen him play, but the SCBL is not good. Hasn't been for quite a while either.

It's hard to say how good he may be but the same could be said about the girls and Sara Lungren came out of that league. Does he have Div. I athletic ability would require someone that knows talent to see him play. There is no doubt in my mind that every year, a player or two from very small schools could come into the City League and compete with the very best. I don't know how much exposure a kid from a school like that gets in BB camps, etc.

All I know is that he and another player score about 85% of the team's points. Seems like once I looked and Mayes had about 50 and the other player had around 30.

They both get a lot of easy, uncontested, fast break layups based on what I saw and have heard. That's where most of their points come from. But he can shoot as well.

                I'm not sure he's a D1 prospect though.

Sounds like a possible lower tier juco prospect like Labette or Neosho.

Bryce visited our game versus Drake, possible walk-on?

                      He'd be a welcomed walk-on I'd think.

For the type of walk-on I'd like to see us have in the future, think of Hatch if he was a walk-on today. That would be a good walk-on, someone that today might be able to start, but in the future wouldn't be good enough.

Fool's gold.....you're just kidding yourself. That's like saying, "I'd like a walkon like Micheal Jordan....good enough to dominate now but hopefully our recruiting gets better in the long run."

What you want in a walk on is someone is strong willed, loves the program deeply, can handle how tough D1 is, and is a leader in and out of the locker room. If they are sharp enough to mentally test the team and can provide a contested practice, all the better.

To want someone that can challenge for playing time is not reasonable. There isn't going to be enough playing time to matter 14, 15 or 16 deep. Sure you want someone that can fill in when there are injuries but you expect never to have to go that deep. And, if they were that good, then they probably are going to get a scholarship elsewhere anyway.

I forget the player's name, but I thought there was someone that decided he'd rather walk-on at Kansas, then play here with a scholarship.
