  • Gavin Thurman

Gavin goes to Wichita Southeast as a freshman. He is 6'7" and plays varsity ball.

I happen to be in a program called Freshman Advisory at Southeast as a sophomore, and what we do is get two or three kids who are sophomores or above to go into freshman study hall classes to help them figure out high school. Gavin is in the class that I mentor.

Maybe I could start talking to him tomorrow? What do you guys think?

Obviously, we all love to hear about the youngsters around the city. I just would not want him to feel too pressured. He needs to concentrate on his school work and playing, not on answering all the questions a bunch of crazed fans (I'm as bad as any) might have.

If you can fill in some tidbits, great and thank you. Just don't pressure the young man.

        Thanks again.

Exactly. I'm thinking about just asking him a few questions each time I go in there (once every week or two) and telling him more about our program, then bringing info back here... as soon as the lesson is over.

Be selective and judicious. If his comments to you make the rounds and gets back to him, he may not be very forthcoming in the future - to you or anyone.

Didn't Eddie Sutton simply send his recruits envelopes full of cash?

I'm not sure that works anymore though.

And if that fails hire his dad(Danny) or his coach (Darnell), or give his girlfriend a scholarship(Greg).

OK, I talked to him today. Here's what I've got.

                        -Basketball IQ is very high
-Being much more patient with his decisions than Perry Ellis
-Gave Perry Ellis props, but thinks he is as good or better than Ellis (and he is not alone, some high school ball scouters think so as well)
-Wants to stay 4 years in college
-Has no idea where he wants to go for college (when I asked, he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "I dunno. KU?" He obviously doesn't care at the moment)
-Likes, is interested in and respects Wichita State's program
-Says that playing for Wichita State would be "cool."
-Gregg Marshall has sent him 2 letters

Was he held scoreless last night against Northwest last night?

Yes. He hasn't gotten many minutes in his first two games. I get the notion that coach Taylor is showing him his place as a freshman; doesn't want him to get big headed or anything.

I'm writing a feature article on him for the school paper in the next issue or two. I'll post it here when it's finished.
