  • Recruiting from Texas

Is it just my imagination, or are the other MVC schools starting to appear on lists of the Texas guys? I don't recall many being on guys lists before. Has WSU's success with the boys from the Lone Star State made some programs re-evaluate the areas that they recruit?

It may have some effect, but I also believe that a couple of schools have brought in coaches with contacts in TX. You can't blame them

It may also be because the success of the Valley over the last 6 years or so has allowed schools to expand their recruiting base, because their is more national recognition of the Valley.

Coaches are going to go where there is talent, and there is a lot of talent in Texas, plus, I believe, over 500 High Schools.

That's true, it just doesn't seem like they were going there before WSU had a little bit of success down there.

            Schools

Actually, Snap, there are over a thousand public high schools that play basketball in Texas, plus the private or parochial schools such as Dallas Jesuit (Kyle Wilson) and Westbury Christian in Houston (Wendell Preadom).

            That's a lot of players.

I think there are over 500 HS's in KS. :D I haven't counted but when you figure in the public schools and add in the others like SCA and company...

Out of curiosity, what other MVC schools are recruiting hard down there?

I haven't done exhaustive research or anything, but I believe the new staffs at IlSU and MSU have ventured down there. I'm not sure if anyone else has. I don't think many others have added coaches recently with TX connections.

Bradley is recruiting high school players from Texas. They are in on Rubit and Frazier. They landed a Texas high school player last year by the name of Thompson I believe. Texashoops had him ranked something like 25th to 30th. One of their assistants (can't think of his name) has a connection to Texas. His dad coached Houston in the late 90's (not positive of the dates). I think he is now an assistant at Kentucky.

Other than Bradley, I don't believe we have much MVC competition for high school players from Texas that I can think of.

I may have had the wrong Illinois team. Do I get some credit for having the right color? :D

IIRC, Bradley's Thompson was a teammate of Toure Murry.

A few more points to Sub as Missouri State is recruiting Kelly Lawson. Going through recruits on their message board, he is the only one from Texas. Most of their recruits are from Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and a couple from Indiana. They have gone south for a couple of others, to Virginia and Alabama.

Of course recruiting up North was expected because of their new coach. I didn't see anybody on their new staff that has obvious Texas ties. But it looks like they will spread their recruiting out a little more than Barry did. Perhaps they have a little more recruiting money.
