I'm supposed to go to one of the JUCO camps this summer. I missed the one in Lawrence and I'm not sure when the one in Hutch is but I don't think I can get off work to attend. We've been under staffed and are still breaking in the new people and it's almost impossible for me to get away. There's nothing like training your own supervisor...

I did work the MAYB Kickoff Tourney a few weeks ago at WSU with some area varsity/college officials. That was fun and there was some good talent on the floor. But I had to work around my work schedule which was tough and a pain for everyone involved.

I'm not sure the guy who runs the camp I've been attending the past few years will let me come back. Although I haven't recieved as much love from the area commissioners as some think I should so I'm a bit lost on what I need to do there. The guy who runs the camp is very much in my corner and the guy who runs what may be the best conference in the area likes me and has given me games. At one point last year he asked if I'd be interested in helping work the camp. But at this point I'm not that much of a success story.

Outside of that I'm still working myself into things. It's a tough road but I think I'll get there. Hopefully next summer I'll be able to hit the camp that should be in Maize. Until then all I can do is keep plugging away and bust my butt and make the most of whatever opportunities come my way. Eventually all of these connections I've made will help open another door or two.

And I enjoyed being at the WSU camp this last weekend. It was fun and I watched with two people I know who were also there. It was fun to observe all the players and pick out which ones impressed everybody. There was a lot of young talent on the floor. And as they say..... "the future looks bright"

      Sub,
I presume your intentions are for HS ball only. Therefore, getting in front of the league assignors along with good references from veteran officials is the most common route.
I'm not sure how officials are assigned in KS (meaning crews or individually), but unless you're seen by those who make the decisions, it could be a long arduous journey.
In the past, working JV games and word of mouth was about it. Today, it's camps, camps and more camps. Assignors, just like coaches, can go to camp and see more people in a day versus running around to multiple games. Add in the price of gas and it's a no-brainer.
I don't have any HS contacts in KS. However, if your interested in the college camps, let me know. I'll e-mail the assignors and how to make contact.

Above all, make the right call.

Thanks SR. As of right now I just want to get to a full varsity schedule. The JUCO camps that alternate between Hutch and Maize offer a new experience for HS officials and more exposure in front of the assignors. I hear they've gotten better at not treating the HS officials like the college guys when it comes to mechanics. My brother went last year and said it was a great experience. I was hoping to go but don't think it'll work as i've stated above.

Everyone talks about the politics behind it and how you have to suck up to some guys. That's not my style and will probably hold me back some. I need to use my Circle connection to get me into that league. I've been doing JV/FR games there for the past 4 or 5 years and the guy who schedules that seems to like me and I've heard he's kinda close with the assignor for that league. I just hate asking people for favors.

And for the most part games are assigned individually. There are a couple of crews I know of that do work together a lot though. I have some 5A and 6A games lined up in the AVCTL I/II with the guy that seems to like me and another assignor has a 1A/2A league (South Central Border League) that I get games in. But that's a lot of travel as most of them are south and east and a good hour and a half drive. But at this point I take what I can get. There's a fairly good 3A league around here I've done a little bit of work in and then the 4A AVCTL III/IV that I'd love to be in. If the City League ever gets a new assignor that's been rumored I have a good chance of getting in there.

I'd like to have a few years of a varsity schedule before I even think about going in to JUCO or whatever.

          Sub,
I’ve been around the block a few times and experienced my share of life’s ups and downs. Believe me, there’s nothing wrong with ‘pulling in your markers’ and asking favors from individuals you highly respect… whether it be friends, relatives and or acquaintances. As you reach success, you will have the chance to return the favor to those who may follow. Actually, I’ve found that the best way to make it in this tough world is to ‘grab the bull by the horns’ and not be afraid of failure or rejection. 'It is better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all.’ I’m not saying to suck-up to people… just pick the peers that you respect (SR would be a good candidate) and ask for their assistance when needed. If your participation on this board is any indication of your future success; you’re well on your way to fulfilling your dreams.

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark
          One: Don't miss the boat.
Two: Remember that we are all in the same boat.
Three: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
Four: Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
Five: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
Six: Build your future on high ground.
Seven: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
Eight: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
Nine: When you're stressed, float a while.
Ten: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
Eleven: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting...Pass this along and make someone else smile, too.

Thanks for that post WstateU. It's appreciated and some of it I know but still struggle with. I hate being pushy but know I need to be more aggressive with some of these individuals. I need to sit back and organize a "plan of attack" that will get me where I want to go. I'm still young and know I have to pay my dues. But maybe it is time to start working on the guys I've learned from and respect to see if they can help plant the bug in the ear of some of the assignors.

One of these days I'll figure out the delicate balance between my personality type and aggressiveness that I can live with without feeling like I'm doing something dirty. Or....something like that.

Jon Ekey has committed to Illinois State. He probably got upset that we overlooked giving him his own thread.

In case you missed it, WSU had offered.
