  • Hoopmasters' recruiting rankings

Hoopmasters (Van Coleman) just came out with revised rankings for recruiting classes based upon adjustments due to Spring signings. He officially ranks the top 40 schools and no Valley teams made it. However, SIU was in the near misses. Assuming he puts the Near Misses in order, they came in #47. WSU and NIU made the Best of the Rest list. Again assuming they are listed in order, NIU was #56 and WSU #60. Hoopmasters considered EO as part of this recruiting class.

When it comes to trying to figure out who the best recruits are, IMO there probably isn't significant difference between #47 and #60.

Probably not even from 20 to 60. I'd still probably take those classes ranked up around 50 or so just as much as a #20 or 25.

I'm waiting to hear back from Van on this, which is why I didn't post it. It list WSU with 5 recruits, not the 6 new scholarship players that we have signed. He definitely doesn't include AJ, who was last year.

I realize that no 1 person can even begin to evaluate 350+ recruiting classes but I promise you 1 thing.......UNI's class couldn't carry WSU's jock strap, now or in the future.

I agree with Doc. It doesn't surprise to see SIU higher, but UNI is a head scratcher.

            Northern Iowa's class includes:

Ali Farokhmanesh, a PG from Kirkwood CC,
Anthony James, a G from St. Louis,
Jake Koch, F from Ashwaubenon, WI,
John Moran, G from Algonquin, IL,
Austin Pehl, F from Cedar Falls, IA.

It is a pretty solid class, but as the Good Dr. said, it is definitely not above WSU.

Van didn't have Kyles on his list when he was doing the rankings. He reiterated that the Best of rest is in no particular order and said that he agreed that it appeared with another solid player that our class would rank up there with SIU.

Also, the MVC and WSU both have not released a final signings list. The Final rankings will be done when those come out from all conferences and schools and all players can be evaluted (including our 7th recruit).

                Jake?

I assume the Jake Koch that UNI signed is the younger brother of Adam, for whom MT and his staff finished a close and very disappointed second.

Second isn't a good place to end up in the recruiting derby for a player, unless he happens later to decide to transfer -- it's how you end up with a class of guys like Chris Brown.

I hate it when people use Chris Brown like that. I still think if he didn't have the health problems (back) he would have been a good player for us.

                      Brown

Could be a fair point, Sub, and I shouldn't (and didn't mean to) pick on him; he just came immediately to mind.

Clearly Brown's back problems limited him, and without them he might indeed have been useful. At the same time, though, he was indisputably a "Plan B" recruit, and according to MT, one of his problems was also that the D-1 game was a little too fast for him. That isn't a health issue.

My real point. brought to mind by the reference to Jake Koch, was that finishing second for your "Plan A" recruits and having to go to your backups is a good way to see your talent pool diminish -- which I think we can all agree did happen.

Hoopmasters came out with their adjusted 2008 class rankings. SIU remains in the near misses. WSU and UNI remain in the best of the rest and were joined by Bradley.

I'm not thrilled about the "use" of past players either, but CB had other issues that adversely affected his play. He wasn't going to contribute to this program so it was best for both parties for him to move on.
