They have to keep up with USC. That's now two commits from that grade level that I know of. Now I'm waiting for a 6th or 7th grader to commit...
There is supposed to be NO official contact between schools/coaches/boosters/admins and recruits before their So. year, correct?
No school can actually offer a scholarship before their Jr year, correct?
Therefore, the verbal commit is nothing more than window dressing and the school cannot possibly be involved, correct?
If I were the NCAA, and my goal was to protect the student athlete, wouldn't I be interested in why the child was committing to a University that is not able to reciprocate for at least a year or perhaps 3-5?
Somebody please tell me what I am missing because to me, something really stinks here.

Schools/coaches cannot initiate contact. They are, however, allowed to accept calls initiated by the kid/kid's parents.
They can commit at anytime. But no paperwork can be signed.
His commit is just that a commit. It could change between no and then w/o any consequence. But it makes for a good laugh.
With that said - my 7 yr old and 8 month old both have declared they will be playing sports of some kind at Wichita State following successfull completion of thier high school years. Thank you and good night
Which allows a school to somehow let a kid know they're watching then that kid can call when he wants. I think offers can be extended in such cases but they still can't sign anything until their SR year.

Thanks DJA, I wasn't aware of that 1 way street prior to their So year.
It would still seem to me that those rules are not in the best interest of keeping things on the up and up. I mean, seriously, how hard is it to get contact information to a kid?
Exactly. I wonder how many times a coach accidentally drops his card and it happens to fall into the lap of a parent of one of the athletes...
But that would be nothing wrong done in the NCAA's eyes. Unless it was a "Less Important" school. (that is now how I will refer to the non-BS schools from the NCAA standpoint).
School officials confirmed yesterday that neither Kentucky nor Texas Christian have contacted Iowa State about Wesley Johnson's scholarship. Coach McDermott stressed that former Iowa State assistant Jean Prioleau had not lured the forward to join him at Texas Christian.
