  • How much attention to place on stars

We need to be careful how much status we give to lunkers and stars on recruits. We all know our stories about Ron Baker, and FVV and how they lacked attention during their recruitment. Here is a comment by Jon Rothstein that should put this in perspective for us and that we should remember. There is some controversy of this twitter by people seemingly defending Melo. I still remember when Melo was protected by Turg and made the national team over FVV. I think that may have kept the US from the Gold Medal.

Draft night, I was thinking the same thing about Melo Trimble. This kid has been sooooo overrated, and the proof of that was the disinterest from NBA clubs. No way should he have made that PanAm team, he was absolutely useless. Couldn't even get the ball across half court against pressure. Put Fred on that team and the US might come away with gold.

In our case, stars don't matter that much. Like HCGM says, we're about getting players with potential and building them up over a 3 or 4 year career. The 5* kid is one that is usually more physically mature at a younger age. We want the guys that will catch up when they are 20.

There is way too much emphasis put on stars. If you think a well coached team of two and three star players can't compete with teams comprised of four and five star guys well, just look at a team like...................Wichita State.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

I like to believe that HCGM and staff are better evaluators of talent than the guys assigning the stars on recruits. I think going forward a lot of these "guys" assigning stars will pay more attention to who our staff extends offers to.

If you are talking about recruiting service stars, very little. Trust the coaches. If you are talking about actual talent, you have to have stars to win the big games. Our Final Four team had 3 NBA players. I'll take a well coached team of NBA talent over a well coached team of Euro talent every day.

FWIW I think our current team has 2 NBA players (McDuffie and Shamet).
