  • Jahmal McMurray 2015 SG to attend WSU camp

Just wanted to provide an update on recent Highland Park graduate Jahmal McMurray, who has decided to reclassify to 2015 class and attend Sunrise Christian Academy this fall.

McMurray received positive review from Kansas head coach Bill Self this past weekend at their team camp and McMurray plans to attend the Wichita State camp this upcoming weekend.

Here's a complete (free) story about McMurray's thoughts on Kansas and Wichita State:

Played right around the corner and was not noticed
Until now. Almost sounded a little ticked off.

6' shooting guards typically don't hit the radar of major programs. At that height, you better be ready to play some point if you want to play big time college ball.

He is not a tall guard. The most impressive thing about him is that he can shoot it from way downtown, has a mid range game, and can get to the hoop and finish too. He is similar to Trevon Evans from Goddard, but he is going to Sunrise to improve his standing regarding recruiting (and will be a Freshman in 2015), and Evans is going the Juco route. Jahmal is rated by 247 sports as the #1 player in the state of Kansas last year and averaged 20 points. Evans averaged mid 20's (22-25 not for sure). I'm sure that he is trying to improve as a point guard at Sunrise.

Actually, that's several impressive things, monster. But it also sounds a lot like a description of Rian Holland, don't you think?

Yes, similar to Holland. Holland is 2014 while McMurray is 2015 and I haven't seen Holland play (even in a highlite reel). I'd be surprised to see them sign him during the fall but during the spring if they have openings, a guard doesn't return, and if he improves his ability to play point, maybe.

You have your Holland's mixed up. Not sure who you are talking about 2014 class.

Actually, I don't, Dan. I was referring to Rian Holland (2013 class), who sat out and will be a redshirt freshman in 2014-15. My point was that unless MacKay is actually the second coming of Chris Paul and the Shocks are the only ones to realize it, WSU probably has a greater need at other roster spots than they do for the second coming of Rian Holland when Holland still has three years left at WSU.

I suspect monster just committed a typo when he referred to Holland as 2014 because he didn't play this past season.

I wouldn't say he's ticked off to the point where he wouldn't be interested in a program and wants to bolt the state. He's definitely interested in the in-state programs especially if they offer. He's just been staying positive throughout this whole process and looking to continue working on his game. He's always been considered a gym rat so the improvements will continue to be made. A strong July along with playing at Sunrise could really vault his recruitment.

Here's what his summer basketball team coach, Tony Barksdale (former Western Michigan player), had to say about Jahmal playing point:

“Jahmal just continues to get better,” Barksdale said. “He’s getting stronger and defensively he’s playing better post defense. Stand-up defense, he plays pretty well, but he just has to tighten up his post defense—that has a lot to do with strength. … Other than that, Jahmal is Jahmal, he brings it every game, every tournament. Offensively he’s the best. Some people question if he can play the point, he’s a basketball player. Our guys are basketball players, play them wherever. Put him at the point, put him at the two, he’s going to hold his own.”

I just got off the phone with Jahmal, who said he had a great time at the camp. I'll have more details on his experience posted on the site at midnight.

Jahmal transferred from South Florida after the fall semester. He was averaging 20 ppg in the three games he did play for USF this season and averaged 15 ppg as a freshman last season. Going to play Juco for the rest of this year and then choose a school in June. Interest so far from Texas, Baylor, Arizona State, UNC-Wilmington, Western Kentucky and New Mexico State.
