  • I'm pretty sure all of our recruits are probably going to be a bust. That makes sense.

When I wonder if someone will be a bust, I just go ahead and check Marshall's record again.

I suppose averaging about 27 wins or so every year could be a fluke after all. This recruiting class is probably a failure...

      11-12; 27

This season is not over, so it shouldn't be included in the average (as it is dragging the average down unfairly).

So 27.75 over the last four complete seasons is a more accurate depiction.

Just few days ago we brought you a story of David Wachira, the exemplary alumni who gave over $4,000 of his first paycheck to help other graduates to finish their studies. Here is another success story of Basketball player Bush Wamukota, a Kilgore College sophomore who takes nothing for granted.

Not the rim in Masters Gym, not the shoes on his feet, not even the ball.

“Only a few years ago I was playing outside with flip flops and a bicycle rim (for a hoop),” said Wamukota, who learned to play basketball with a paper ball.

Born and raised in Kenya, Wamukota never played organized basketball until his senior year of high school. Growing eight inches in 18 months, The seven footer had an unlikely opportunity to leave his home country and play basketball at Wiley College in Texas.

“My friends at Wiley saw me play and said you have a lot of potential and could be really good and should play at a higher level,” said Wamukota.

Wamukota had his sites set on Division One hoops. Without enough credit hours, he was encouraged to find a junior college program.

“Most of the junior college’s called me and I told them ‘No, I don’t want to go,’” said Wamukota. “Most of them gave up but the coach here at Kilgore kept calling me and calling me.”

Coach Brian Hoberecht’s persistence paid off. Wamukota made a visit to Kilgore, and wanted to stay.

“He’s got a great mind for the game of basketball,” said Hoberecht. “He’s a good student off the floor. He understands how to learn and grow. Those things have helped to adapt to the game of basketball quickly which is given him an opportunity most kids in his shoes are just dreaming about.”

With only a couple years of basketball under his belt, Wamukota is a starter for the No. 2 ranked junior college team in the country. As if the story can’t get any better, the inexperienced big man has signed with one of the top Division One program’s in the country, Wichita State.

A Final Four program last season, that is currently ranked No. 6 in the country.

“The sky is not the limit for me,” said Wamukota with a smile. “I go way past the sky. The only thing you can do is get better everyday. I’m ready to work hard so when that time comes on the big stage I’ll be ready.”

Wamukota hopes to one day play pro basketball, but his number one goal is to earn his degree, and bring hope back to his home community in Kenya.

“The town where I’m from we didn’t even have basketball court,” said the future Wichita State Shocker. “I had to play on trees and stuff like that. So I just want to go back and give back and serve so they can have somebody to look up to.”-kltv.com

              • A perfect great example of how a player (especially a Center) can turn it around from one year to the next is our Lufile.

After seeing him play last year my impression was that here is a young man who just was not going to cut it at the Div 1 level.

How happy I am now for being wrong. And the great thing is he is still improving and his confidence level is growing as well.

                • my biggest problem with Wamukota is that every story seems to focus on how successful he is because he earned a scholarship to WSU. I haven't seen one story written about how good he is or how good he will be at the next level. I haven't seen anything about him dominating a game at the JUCO level. I hope we can redshirt him and get 2 productive years, not sure if that's an option. I understand that big guys take longer to develop, but surely we can get someone a little more refined.

Why don't you take a short road trip and see what you think. Juco big men are notoriously difficult to evaluate on statistics. Often the ball doesn't go through them.

                      • Two things will determine whether Bush redshirts:

                        -His progress from March until October;
                        -Whether we sign Willie Atwood.

                        • Bush is a 6-11, 235 lb athlete. He will alter shots with his presence, and so long as he doesn't have bricks for hands, he will be fine on offense. His ceiling is huge, but I expect him to play 15-20 minutes and average 4 points and 4 boards, probably 1 block per game. He will add a lot of options to the Shockers that will also have Carter and Shaq to help patrol the paint.

Marshall and his staff are good recruiters, Dan. If it were possible to get someone who is a BETTER PROSPECT for WSU (not necessarily the same thing as "more refined" at this point), I'm confident they'd do so. I'll trust the coaches' talent judgement and developmental ability, not our apprehensions based on a smattering of articles.

I have been Wamukota's biggest fan on this thread and a couple of things to think about one of which has already been mentioned. I have watched several of Kilgore's games and even though Wamukota does not jump off the screen Kilgore does not even come close to establishing him in the post. When they do feed the post I have to admit that his post moves are a bit raw but he does have good soft hands and shoot free throws. As far as what he does well for Marshall's system is that he is athletic, rebounds, and has the foot speed to hedge on the ball screens. As we all know another Marshall trait is effort. I emailed the assistant coach from Kilgore and he told me that Wamukota is the hardest working big man that he has ever coached. I don't put alot of stock into the rankings but just looking at 247 sports he is overall our highest ranked recruit coming in around 180. I think the sky is the limit and he probably has the highest ceiling of any of our players. As much as I am a Shocker fan I doubt we are going to get a polished NBA ready 7 footer. For a kid that has only been playing organized basketball for 3 years I think he has done very well. In the end I think we all need to trust Marshall and his player analysis and development. I had my doubts with Chadrack and look where he is now. Hopefully we all have that patience with Wamukota and I think we will be rewarded.
