  • The Wichita State Effect?

    Justin Young ‏@JustinDYoung 20 Jul
JC players value is so high right now. At least 200 coaches at the @JUCOShowcase at @ssasports. The Wichita State effect?

Interesting tweet. No links or stories...

well, you also need the coaches that can make it work. eddie sutton, for example, was a master at it. okie state signed a juco all-american nearly every year during his tenure with the pokes (and sprinkle in some solid prep recruits, too) with great success.

that seems to be marshall's plan at wichita state. 'wish turgeon had done more of it. of course, at duke, kentucky, ucla etc., you can just sign four or five star prep recruits ad nauseum.

Turgeon went after transfers, and with a great deal of success. Bradley, Wilson, Thomasson, and he would have had Latimore if he wasn't such a head case.

Nothing wrong with what MT did for our program and two of the three you mentioned turned out to be really good but I would submit the HCGM has been more successful with his formula than MT was. It also seems that we have yet to see a senior that did not build on his junior year as we did during the MT years.

Our baseball program used to be remarkably consistent with this too in the 90s.
In Howard's defense, he was injured much of his SR year and battled through it.

i would have rather seen him go after juco all-americans and a mix of solid preps a'la eddie sutton and gregg marshall. not that he could handle that, though- like i said, it takes the right coach to pull it off. eddie sutton and gregg marshall are on a different level than turgeon. :)

3G has done well with transfers so far in Blair and we're assuming Coleby.

                    Armstead is another good example.

Johnny Coy did not fair so well.

Isn't that stupid? I knew you were to, but could not come up with it.

A guy from a D3 JuCo dropped 24 and 10 on the NC under some very bright lights. That MIGHT just get a few more coaches looking a little deeper into the JuCo ranks.

With Marshall, Heiar, and Forbes on the staff, I think we're in pretty good position to continue seeing "The Wichita State Effect".
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Well, Aargh, the two-time player of the year isn't just "a guy," but your point about D3 is valid. No doubt there are coaches who don't even bother with it because they think the competition is so poor as to make players from "that level" just too risky -- are the really any good, regardless of their numbers?

I think Cleanthony has taught us that the answer to that question can certainly be yes.

Lets also not forget that Cle wasn't just some JUCO D3 guy. He was recruited out of HS and there were coaches that were aware of him. He wasn't at a D3 due to lack of talent or exposure, but because of certain family circumstances. And even out of that D3 he was fairly well recruited by some pretty solid colleges because his talent was fairly well known. There may be question as to how high the ceiling was thought to be because of the poor talent level he was playing against, but it's not as if we dug deep to find him and surprised everyone. He had some BCS offers.
