          WTF indeed.

Police are reporting to the Houston-based media outlet, a family who lived in the home where the shooting took place came back to the house around 8:00 p.m., when one of the children found a burglar in her room, reportedly with a knife. Adults then confronted the burglar and shot him in the leg. The burglar was taken to a Houston-area hospital where he died.

KTRK reports police have not officially identified the burglar, but Swift's family says he was shot and killed at the above location Tuesday night.
So he was shot by someone protecting their family from a knife wielding burglar. All sympathies to his family for losing a son.

Don't break into homes in Texas and threaten people with weapons. Good way to get shot. RIP to Melvin, but we all know this was a very, very poor decision for a guy who appeared to have everything going for him.

I will always fondly remember Swift calling us the University of Wichita State.

My condolences to the family in their loss in this unfortunate situation.

              RIP Melvin.

I follow the recruiting forum rarely. I care about the players joining my alms mater, my community & a basketball program I enjoy. But following high school kids on soci as l media is creepy. I have read this topic a few times. It reads as rather dramatic. I think of a prized recruit we won't get. I think of our coach that has witnessed death. I think about his school calling in grief counselors. But I also think about the family. Who wants to co n e vome, encounter an intruder, have a confrontation, blood & death in their home. I'm also glad this guy hasn't signed & was listed as a WSU recruit. This is a shocking read. I don't understand what would provoke someone to break into someone else's home.
No gain was worth the loss of potential. I read of NBA talent, WSU in on a recruit against big schools, but glad I didn't read that a Shocker made the decision this dude made.

                  More to the story:

Melvin Swift, a member of the Trinity Valley Community College basketball team, was fatally shot inside a family's south-side home. While there's been reports he was shot in a possible burglary, his former coach says there may have been a different explanation as to why he was inside the house.

My info on Melvin, from reliable sources, was he had some off the court issues in the past but all had thought he may have turned the corner. However he left school at semester for some reason.

Now that is a more plausible series of events in my mind.

Well, I'm glad I read the link. He was probably a victim. Rest in peace Melvin.

I had been wondering about just such a scenario before the story was posted. It makes a whole lot more sense and obviously the neighbors' have a vested interest in claiming Swift was threatening them, because there is a murder charge on the line.

I also suspected that the homeowner is ... white

As a father, if he's in my home with my daughter, race is not the defining issue. If I think he is hurting my daughter (which none of us know these specific circumstances), I can guarantee you race would have ZERO to do with the retribution he would receive.

What an odd thing to say for a man of the cloth. How would you know -- do you have inside info, or are you familiar with all the houses on Jorns St. in Houston? If I had to guess, I'd suspect the opposite just based on geography and demographics, but I don't know for sure either, so I'm not going to draw a conclusion one way or the other.

I don't think the Dominicans have ever been known as stereotypers or race merchants, so you may want to rethink that post. Very disappointing.

Edit: By the way, I had Dominican nuns for a couple of years in grade school, so I've had some contact with the Order of Preachers.

This us a racist comment. I have no doubt that both white and black families care about protecting their families/daughters from people who could potentially take advantage and/or hurt them.
