FVV and Cle were top level recruits. In addition, Marshall recruited Shamet, McDuffie, and Tyson Etienne. All 4* recruits. While we agree that Marshall didn’t rely on 4 and 5* recruits for his gaudy record, and a number of his star players were developed, we should also agree that his moxie to go after top recruits wasn’t a problem. He attempted to get the top basketball players, and wasn’t afraid to approach 5* guys and be told, No.

From RoyalShock post on Signings and Verbals 2012 Class:

Fred Van Vleet - Signed - 5-11 PG, Auburn High School (Rockford, IL)
3-stars, #1 Illinois PG, #2 Illinois overall, as a junior averaged 18.5 pts, 7.5 assists, 5 rebs and 5 stls

      Cleanthony Early - Signed - 6-8 F, SUNY-Sullivan
#14 Rivals Top 150 Juco. 20.4ppg and 11.4rpg as a freshman. Juco Div. 3 POY.

As to those that came after, well, we had been to a Final Four and become one of the very best programs, so signing some 4* recruits should not have been a surprise.

I do agree about Marshall's moxie, but that didn't mean he was getting them before that time. Fred became a hot commodity after he had verballed to WSU.

In the final rankings, VanVleet was considered a top 100 recruit by multiple recruiting services and was expected to do huge things in his time at Wichita State.

Since then, VanVleet has famously bet on himself and won at every turn. For a loyal old soul from Rockford, it has been a heck of ride and now he is one of the most productive guards in the NBA.

Now we're in agreement on Fred. From the article: On July 4, 2011, VanVleet made his commitment to Wichita State over Kent State and also Northern Illinois.

Those were not big-time programs. After that verbal, major conference teams took notice and tried to get him away from Marshall and WSU.

Yes, in the final rankings (well after his WSU commitment) he moved up the ladder.
