  • ESPN Recruiting Confidential Survey

Saw this just now on ESPN.com and found it very interesting....

There's a lot of dirt in the recruiting game, especially at the highest levels in basketball. To get to the bottom of it, we spoke to 25 seniors in the ESPNU 100 under the condition of anonymity to get the real story.
"Ralph Miller was one of the finest coaches in the history of intercollegiate basketball. His teams were always fundamentally sound, team oriented, well conditioned, and ran both their offense and defense with great patience. I know of no coach whose teams competed against his, whether it be at Wichita State, Iowa, or Oregon State, who did not have great respect for him."—John Wooden

Probably the most interesting thing on that in relation to Wichita State was this:

Have any schools offered you cash or other illegal benefits?
      Yes: 7
      No: 18

"One day I was working out in the gym with my dad, and some guy who was a booster came over, and he basically offered my dad $100,000 for me to go there."

Yep, seems we have some consistent success in the tourney we belong in we can further succeed in bringing in some top players! What a concept huh?

Hey SB---this wouldn't have anything to do with KU tickets would it?

I actually meant the "School in big-time conference with little tourney success" is more attractive than a mid major with high tournament success. Granted these are 25 athletes from the top 100, so it's not really in our realm of recruiting (yet, hopefully) but the fact that even if we are like Butler and make 2 national championship games, high profile recruits would still rather go play in a bcs conference, on a poor team, than in a winning mid-major program.

And the majority of those 13 players are what I call "losers". Not personally, but just their mentality. That's why those bottom feeder bcs teams are always the same. They don't have a overwhelming desire to win. They just want the tag of playing in a bcs conference. I'd take less talented players anyday that want to play for a winner, and contribute to a winning program, regardless of the conference.

I understand what you're saying. I just don't get it/like it. I feel like we're edging closer to that picking up a player like FVV.....

FVV and Early both are in that realm of eclipsing the top 100 caliber of player. It will be interesting to see how well we recruit if Marshall stays around for a few years.

Hawkins is also in that group just outside the top 100, not to mention Green (rare size/skill set) and the Henry (rare height/athleticism) and all of our commits for next year were wooed to some extent as if they were top 100 players.

When I saw some video of Derail he reminded me of the description of John Wilkins (the lanky kid for Illinois St). A guy with PF height but SG/SF skills. I don't know if that's good or bad.

Good or bad, I think the common trend with Marshall's recruiting is tall, lean, athletic players. I think we could have the tallest lineup in the Valley, and compete on height in any bcs conference.

Definately good in theory. In reality, it can be difficult to find the right position for kids like Green to be successful. If you were to put on rose-colored glasses, you might draw the comparison to Lamar Odum. He was a 6-10 guard his only year in the NCAA. He learned to play in the paint in the NBA and is a good player. Green will have to either improve his quickness or his strength so that he can use his height or skills to dominate. A slow 6-7 shooting guard is worth about as much as a 3 point shooting PF that is afraid of contact. He might be more of a Rob Kampman type. IIR, Rob used to bring the ball up the court for his HS team, but he posted-up on offense and defense as well.

It all depends on how he develops. Wilkins aparently doesn't like playing with his back to the basket and it sounds like that's what Jank is trying to make him do. I think that's thrown him off his game.

If Green is able to be a SF I'll be thrilled. I didn't realize the kid shot as well as he did from deep. It's a nice weapon to have. How quick is he? that remains to be seen. But I'm not going to peg him as slow just because he's tall.

Not sure on his quickness, but the taller you are the higher the liklihood that you will be less quick than a 6-3 wing. If he is quick enough to guard 6-3 wings he will be a huge asset from the get-go.
