  • Andre Walker - Vanderbilt transfer considering WSU

    Brewster Basketball
Another school in mix for #Brewster graduate Andre Walker '07 is Wichita State. He will schedule visits at some point this week.
From what I can figure out, Walker just graduated from Vanderbilt and has a year of eligibility remaining.

Played in 15 games, started eight, last season. Averaged 3 pts and 3 boards.

Forgot to add that the other schools on his list are KU, Northwestern and Xavier.

Do we really need to bring in a SR bench player for one year? We have enough SRs as it is.

From what I can tell he's had a weird career at Vandy.

Role player his freshman season. 11 mpg, 2.4 ppg, 2.0 rpg.

Only played 3 games his sophomore year, I believe, due to injury. Must have already received a medical redshirt.

Started most of his RS sophomore year with OK numbers, including good assists-per-game for a PF.

He started the early portion of his junior year but was eventually sidelined with an ankle sprain until the SEC tournament. He played in three games, but comments from Stallings indicated he wasn't mentally prepared to play, whatever that means.

Due to over-recruitment he was likely not going to play much next year.

We need another frontcourt player who can step right in and play.

He doesn't sound all that promising to me and not worth possibly taking court time away from White.

I doubt that there are any HS PF's available. IMO, this would not be a bad move. We basically have a scholarship to burn and need to burn it on the best player that we can. This would be a short term solution to a spot that we are not deep at. The scholarship will open up again next year when there may be a quality HS player available.

I have the same thoughts on this.

We have the potential to have a very, very good year and you wouldn't want to waste it because you lacked experienced depth at the PF position. Normally, only getting a guy for one year isn't a great deal, but what if the difference between being an NIT team again or making an NCAA run is an experienced defender/rebounder?

Found this blurb on NBADraft.net under Top 5 "Glue Guys":

Andre Walker, Vanderbilt- The Commodores point-forward has missed the last four games with an undisclosed illnesss. He's not a scorer, but he's perhaps Vanderbilt's top passer and decision maker. He's putting up 4 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 24 minutes of action.
Point-forward . . . interesting. How does that fit in to Marshall's system with our current personnel?

He missed a lot of games last year due to a sprained ankle. He sounds like a baller and would ensure a deep front court. Crazy not to take him.

A flexible player who can perhaps play defense on a power forward like Weems (6'6) who is effective outside and inside? I doubt that White can do this and I'm not sure we have anyone else who can do it.

He's one of the best available transfers.

Daniel Poneman's review of him when at Brewster:

"Walker is a very crafty player with and away from the ball and has great perimeter skills for a player his size. He has a great effortless shot and great passing skills. He can also bang down low and use his good frame to get a rebound. He has al ot of potential to be a very dangerous player right away at Vanderbilt, where he could start his freshman year."

Sounds very versatile and good maybe could even play a little 3. I think he did in HS.

This really does make sense for us. Gives us an experienced 3/4, and we still have a scholarship for next year.
