    Brandon Mahan 6'5 G/F 2018 JUCO to Texas A&M

    WSU was in to watch Chipola last night and offered 6'5 SG/SF Brandon Mahan from Birmingham, Alabama. Brandon is a freshman at Chipola but is an early qualifier and is eligible for three years of Division-1 basketball. In his freshman season, he's averaging 13.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, while shooting 51% from both the field and the three-point line and 76% from the charity stripe. Holds offers from Cincinnati, Memphis, East Carolina, Dayton, UCF, Middle Tennessee, Loyola-Marymount, St. Louis, Utah Valley and Texas State.

        I wish these highlights tapes would show some of what these guys offer on defense. Hard to make an assessment off a guy shooting a bunch of 3 pointers. Not doubting our staff, but Zach Brown could make a highlight tape of a bunch of 3 pointers with a few dunks thrown in.

          Agree with your overall point but this guys is shooting 51 percent vs Zach shooting 32 percent.

        Three takeaways.
        This guy is probably a higher recruit than Zach. It looks like his recruiting will heat up extensively because of 3 yrs. of eligibility.
        Gregg thinks he can to a certain extent coach him to play defense and this guy has 3 years after one year of juco caliber play.
        He is not only hitting threes but they are deep shots 2-3' beyond 20'.

          I'm not comparing him to Zach, just expressing that these highlight tapes are very one sided (offense) - it's not just this guy, it's almost everyone. They like to show how they can score baskets, which is only a fraction of the game.

        You can (generally) teach good offensive players to be good on defense if they already aren't. You cannot (generally) teach good defensive players to be good offensively if they already aren't.

          Deep range. Ball skills the likes of which Z. Brown has never displayed, that I can recall.

          No doubt Z. Brown is a pretty good defender, but it just seems to balance out due to his careless ball-handling.
