I wondered that as well.

DeWitt was a Missouri commit who, if I understand, didn't qualify. If academics were a concern for awhile, it's possible Heiar had been recruiting him. If not, it was probably a short courtship.
It's not right and it shouldn't be done. By anyone.
New to this conversation but I agree. If it happens all of the time but one does not have to approve. Although the nature of sports is an ever evolving one, it seems the changes taking place are more an indication that integrity and "one's word" are simply not what they used to be.

We may end up the recipient of a great player...and Lord knows we have lost our share of these as well, but like it or not, this is something I will have to get used to it appears.

BUT, if the young man does not want to stay at USM, then are we really going to deny him an opportunity to play where he wants? He certainly does not owe an explanation of his actions to satisfy shockernet's arbitrary recruiting ethics, does he?
Right now, this is all hypothetical. However I agree with the post above.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

How many players this season, that we know of, have changed schools because of a coaching change? I'm sure you can list a few.

Southern Miss released him from the his LOI. I don't get the issue? If Southern Miss had concerns about losing this recruit they wouldn't have released him.

If the kid is adamant about not playing at Southern Miss, why is it so bothersome he follows a coach he trusts?

They did release him? Have you got a link?

I don't believe we have word yet that they released DeWitt. I'll have no problem taking him when or if they do.

Unless my computer is slow, no report of a release.

I found this response from Brad Winton interesting:

Happens all the time when assistants, who do most of the recruiting, leave for other programs. A lot of the head coaches don’t want a player who doesn’t want to be in their program.
This statement is at odds with Sub's statement that his kind of thing very rarely happens. Does this Winton guy have a clue or is he just blowing smoke?

Is he saying the follow the assistant all the time or that they back out of their commitment to the school all the time? I understand backing out of the commitment to THAT school. Following the coach is something completely different.

That would be a good pickup. If he comes here, the Shox might not take a step back next year, as I am expecting (losing Blair, Durley, Ellis and even Hatch, is a HUGE loss on the boards, offensive and defensive, for what was an outstanding rebounding team.. that team could rebound with ANY team in the country last year).

Everything looks good.. lets get him in here.

Sorry I misread an article. Still, if they release him, then what does it matter where he goes?

Really it is all about the morals of it. Some think it is wrong because a school and its staff has put their recruiting dollars and time towards this player and then they lose an assistant coach and that player follows him. Basically, WSU is getting a player on SMU's dime.

While I would love to have him on the team for next year, it still is not right to do it. But, that is not my decision nor anyone else's on this board. It's up to Greg and Gregg if they would want to bring this kid along if indeed he does get released from his LOI.
