"Ron Baker scouting report from a recruiting service
Three sport athlete with very good athleticism. Strong, lean, and very long frame. 6’7” wing span with very big hands. Has a very good ball IQ. Solid handle, good vision and plays with good rhythm and tempo. Shooter! Can hit shots from all over the floor, is good spotting up, coming off screens or off the dribble. Can get to the rim and finish with either hand. Very good in transition and exciting in the open court. Long arms and athletic ability allow him to guard all three wing players. Gets hands on a lot of balls. Very tough and competitive. Very coachable, great teammate. Level of Placement: MM (view full-length game film)"

That recruiting service pretty much nailed his game.

You hear and see so much about Marshall Henderson.....and Ron Baker is better at everything.

Oh, and he's not an ass.

That is a pretty great scout on him except for the Mid Major level of placement.

My dad once said that it is better to be an @$$hole rather than the whole @$$. Words of wisdom, I tell you.

Yes, good point, bunck. It's funny: what aspect of that report would cause someone to think Baker would have to go to a mid-major and couldn't prosper at WSU's level? Reading it makes him sound like an NBA prospect. Oh, wait a second...

People just feel compelled to classify -- glad we have coaches with better vision. Interesting stuff on the thread about Guy Landry, too, who presumably was a "high-major" prospect. Sometimes the humble kids from western Kansas outperform the fancy guys from all over. Who knew?

                    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKb2kwybPPU Clearly this recruiting video was not distributed to alot of coaches and if it was I am not sure what they were looiking at. Unlike other recruiting viveos with high flying dunks, Ron's video shows passing, shooting, and high basketball IQ. Clearly someting that translated very well to the college game.

This just isn't fair. Ron played like a MAN amongst boys. I have a buddy who coached against him in high school. He said that Ron's squad just absolutely killed them, but said that he couldn't hate them because they were so respectful and sportsmanlike....example, if there was a scrum on the floor for a loose ball, Scott City guys would help his guys up after the whistle was blown. Not cocky....just really, Really, REALLY GOOD!

                        • Shocker Nation was blessed that Ron went to High School in Scott County instead of Johnson County. More so, perhaps we were lucky that he didn't play AAU ball.

                          • Ron did play AAU, but limited the number of tournaments, per this article.

Because he's such a well-rounded athlete, Baker only played in a few AAU basketball tournaments, limiting his visibility. There are schools who knew about him, for sure, but if there's such a thing as falling through the cracks in this age of year-round hoops and the Internet, then that's what Baker did.

                              • A nugget in Sully's article about Baker playing the MVC schedule for the first time:

He has played more games against the Big East (four) and SEC (three) than MVC teams (two current members).
