  • Garza -- Best of All-Time?

Golfer Dustin Garza has been dominate since his junior year for the Shox. I don't have stats for previous Shocker golf greats, but Garza can certainly make a case for the best Shocker golfer ever.

    * 11 career tournament wins (5 as a junior, 6 already as a senior)
    * MVC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman
    * MVC POY as a junior
    * 3rd Team All America honors as a junior
    * Won the MVC Tournament as a junior
    * Won 4 events during the fall schedule as a senior
    * Has won 2 tournaments in a row this spring, including his recent 2-under 211 total over 54-holes at the Shocker Classic held at the difficult Wichita CC
    * Is a candidate to be selected to the Palmer Cup to be held in June. Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-type event with the top 8 U.S. collegiate players vs. the same calibur players representing Great Britian/Ireland. Former players include: Lucas Glover, Hunter Mahan, JB Holmes, Luke Donald, Rory Sabbatini & Charles Howell III.

    Very impressive resume, huh?

Yes, it is a very nice resume. Should be good enough to get Dustin into the Shocker Hall of Fame.

Johnny Stevens, Rod Nuckolls and Gary Navarro are all in the Shocker HOF and were All-Americans.

Johnny made 2nd team AA and Rod made 3rd team. I'm not sure what level of AA Gary made.

Al Littleton and Dick Price are also in the Shocker HOF as golfers (and in Al's case also as a golf coach).

I don't have enough knowledge to say whether or not Dustin is the best Shocker golfer ever, but I would think he is definitely in the discussion.

Shocks are in real battle right now to advance to the nationals. Top 5 advance and WSU sits 6th after 1 of 3 rounds, 1 shot out of 5th and only 6 shots out of the lead.

Every opportunity exists for WSU to move on. Good luck to Dustin and the entire team.

Actually, WSU finished 5th after day 1.

          Golfstat.com has live scoring.

Garza -2 for the day through 2

Looks like the team doesn't want to settle for a 5th place finish. They are looking to climb. Third place right now at -9 as a team.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Golfstat's live scoring for that regional has been spotty at best, shows the total score, but not the individuals. Yesterday it froze after the Shox had just completed 9 holes.

Hopefully the Shox can keep it going. They are playing very well, and keep in mind they are seeded 12th in this regional out of 14 teams.

It was a little spotty earlier ("Service Unavailable"), but appears to be working right now.

Dustin struggling mightily in his debut as pro. He is dead last (by far) and is 21 over par after 27 holes at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

Two holes really killed Dustin in Round one. He a Quad-8 on the Par 4 10th and a 10 on the Par 5 13th.

Interestingly, he started round 2 today on the 10th. He did manage to Par both the 10th hole and the 13th hole today, although he has bogeyed 5 other holes on his first 9 today.

No doubt he was nervous and looks like things snow-balled on him. Looks like a lot of work on the Nationwide Tour is in front of Dustin before he is ready to play in the big leagues.

Dustin finally settled down over his final 9 holes, running off a string of 5 pars and then getting 2 birdies on 2 of the final four holes (his first birdies as a pro).

Despite his struggles through the first 27 holes it's nice to see him compose himself and finish of the final 9 in 2-under 33. Hopefully, that will restore a little bit of confidence as he moves on.

DG will be just fine after he settles in and gets used to the pro environment. It's not the easiest of transistions for sure.

Good Luck to him and all future WSU golf pros.

" ... For the rest of the year, Garza will ride on sponsor’s exemptions into PGA Tour events. He’s in line to compete in this week’s John Deere Classic in East Moline, Ill. on an exemption, but will not find out if he’s in until today. He’s going to compete in the Children’s Hospital Invitational, a Nationwide Tour event in Columbus, Ohio that begins July 22. ..."
