  • Men's Indoor Track Season Thread

Thought I'd start a new thread for the season instead of one for each meet.

This week the Shockers go to Nebraska for a 6-team scored meet against the Huskers, K-State, Missouri, Colorado St, and Air Force. Here is a link to the entries: http://www.aspimeetz.com/MeetPartici...antReport.aspx

Nebraska will probably run away with this meet as they are ranked #4 in the nation I believe. I'd say Mizzou and CSU will battle for 2nd with the Shockers battling K-State and Air Force for 4th. Hopefully WSU will outperform in many areas as 2nd and 3rd are possible. Hard to tell this early in the season really. Last year WSU beat KSU pretty easily in a quad meet outdoor at Nebraska. Should be a great meet!

One difference this week for the Shockers will be that they are running on a banked track for the only time this year, hopefully it will yield faster times along with the better competition.

    Good luck Shox!

      Shockers finish 5th ...
LINCOLN, NEB. -- Sophomore Audacia Moore shattered another school record, this time in the women's 200m dash, as the Wichita State University men's and women's track & field teams were at the adidas Classic on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Kind of a tough meet overall, 7 more points and they would have been 4th.

      Nonetheless some impressive performances ...
--4x4 wins with a 3:15, good early season mark
--Brandon Childs is doing some good jumping for a freshman, 22-7 LJ and 6-6 HJ after going 6-9 last week.
--Josh Crawford 48ft in the Triple Jump, good to see him back and jumping well.
--Hurdlers ran well, Chris Allen 8.16, Cory Beenken (freshman) 8.24, Todd McKown 8.33, all rank near the top of the MVC.
--Dylan Hartnett with an impressive win in the 400, 48.85.

Next week is a big one for the multi's as Dickman, Taylor, and Slupkowski will try to qualify for nationals at Nebraska. Good luck fellas!

It was a light weekend for the Shox on the track but there was at least one significant result from Saturday ...

Chris Dickman put himself in position to make the NCAA Championships Heptathlon with a score of 5569 pts at Nebraska. This was also a school record. Dickman is an incredible story as a walk-on from tiny Grinnell, Kansas, now one of the top multi-eventers in the country!

Also solid meets for Justin Taylor (5182) and Jordan Zerr (4818).

Some of you might remember the story of Devin Dick and his battle with cancer this summer. Well he had a very nice comeback meet and score of 4498 and appears to be gaining momentum towards a scoring spot at MVC's. What an amazing group of multi-athletes!!!

Out in Reno, Aaron Young pr'ed with a jump of 16-3 to lead the Shocker vaulters.

This week WSU hosts a quad at the Heskett Center with the main opponent being Texas-Arlington. Come out and support them in their last home indoor meet!

            '74, thanks for the updates.

I remember a site, but not the details, that gave conference updates on times etc.

Do you know the site to which I refer?

            Thanks again!

There are a couple places you can check ...

Tfrrs is the new NCAA Results reporting website where you can find everything. Its pretty cool once you get a feel for it.

Directathletics is the other one that has the MVC list.

A good solid meet at the Hesket Center this week as the Shox beat UT-Arlington 187-131 as well as a couple other schools.

--Freshman Brandon Childs gets on the national list with a 7-0 clearance in the High Jump!
--Tyler Simmons comes back from an injury to win the long jump going over 24 ft.
--Good to see Jake Stecklein back and running well with a come from behind win in the 800 (1:55) as well as newcomer Jackson Toroitich winning the mile (4:19) and Trace Kendrick winning the 3k (8:43). Its been a long time since I remember the Shox sweeping the distance races like that.
--Impressed with Todd McKown getting 2nd in the hurdles (8.27) and 3rd in the 200 (22.32).
--The throwers keep improving, hopefully they will move on up the MVC scoring list soon.
--The 4x4 has been impressive, easily beating back UTA in 3:17.

Big week as the Shocker runners go to Iowa State for a great meet on a fast track while the field events head to Air Force.

It looks like Indiana St, SIU, WSU, and UNI are battling for the title, this next week will really start to show what everyone has. Go Shox!

The Shockers split up this past weekend and had some nice things happen, this team appears to be getting better and better and may have a shot at the MVC crown in a couple weeks.

The runners (distance and sprints) went to Iowa State, you can watch all the races on http://www.flotrack.org/ ...
--Hurdlers Chris Allen (8.15) and Todd McKown (8.16) run season bests and beat the top MVC guy from Indiana State in the final. McKown also runs a good 200 (22.06)
--Dylan Hartnett and Justin Smith both run 48.4 in the 400 and the 4x4 team runs a season best 3:13 and beat MVC leaders UNI.
--Jake Stecklein keep improving to 1:53 in the 800.
--Jackson Toroitich runs 14:51 for one of the top 5k times in the MVC.
--DMR runs 10:07 which is pretty solid for that young group.
--Justin Taylor hits the NCAA provsional mark in the heptathlon 5325.

The field eventers went to Air Force Academy ...
--Brandon Childs is doing some big things, winning the HJ (6-11) and going 23-2 in the long jump.
--Another nice meet for Tyler Simmons going 24 ft in the LJ.
--Chris Dickman has a big meet going 16-6 in the PV and 21.53 in the 200m!
--Aaron Young and Alex Freshour jump 16 ft in the PV as well.

This week the team will split up again and go to Nebraska (Friday) and K-State (Saturday). It is the final tune-up before the big MVC in 2 weeks!!!

This weekend is the NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas, without a doubt the toughest meet of the year to get in because of the small amount of qualifiers.

Chris Dickman (Heptathlon) and Tyler Simmons (Long Jump) will be making the trip to Fayetteville. Dickman should have an excellent shot at being in the top 8 while Simmons is making his first appearance at the NCAA meet.

I think it is interesting that both of these athletes are from small towns in Kansas (Grinnell and Beloit) and now are among the best in the nation.

Audacia Moore missed making the 200m field by .02. Thats about 5 centimeters over an eigth of a mile! She was the next in line that didn't make it but still ranked #20 in the nation. Great season Audacia!

The meet begins Friday morning with the heptathlon. The long jump is Friday night.

                    Good luck Shockers!!!

Chris sits 11th after day 1. He is about 30 points behind his pace at the Valley championships.

Just looking at sheets, I would expect Chris can move up on day 2. He'll need a very good day. Top 8 would still seem reachable.

However, running in the outside lane might be a little distracting.

Tyler jumped 24' 11.75" good for an 11th place finish.

This is short of his school record 25' 6.25" he recorded in the MVC Championships. That jump would have been good enough for 8th in this year's NCAA indoor meet.

In any case, kudos to Tyler on a great indoor season.

                            :good: :goshocks:

Chris was still 11th with 2 events to go.

He had a solid PV but still dropped from 11th to 12th going into the final event the 1,000 meter run. However, the field was pretty tightly bunched at that point.

Chris ran a great 1,000 meter race finishing 4th in a time of 2:36.04 picking up a big 918 points which vaulted him up to a 7th place finish in the heptaphlon.

Absolutely outstanding for the oustanding young man from tiny Grinnell, Kansas.

                              :good: :goshocks: :yahoo:
