  • U.S. Amateur Golf Championship

Good luck to Shocker Senior Dustin Garza in next weeks U.S. Amateur in Tulsa. Could get interesting to follow if Dustin can hang in there for a while.

First two rounds are stroke play, then it's match play after that.

Shocker senior Dustin Garza duplicated his first-round effort with a 7-over 77 to wrap up play at the 109th U.S. Amateur at historic Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla.

Sounds like the men's golf team will be a little inexperienced this year (based on Dustin's comments at the end of his interview).

Dustin shot +7 77 today at Cedar Ridge CC. He'll play Southern Hills tomorrow. He was T-69 within his wave of players, so you can expect him to be around 140th place after the first round. He will have his work cut out for him tomorrow to make it into the match play portion of the tournament (top 64)

Dodge Kemmer from Wichita was +4 after his front 9. He was also playing Cedar Ridge.

You can follow the results here (looks like they only update after 9 and 18 holes). http://www.usamateur.org/results/

Doesn't look good for Dustin surviving stroke play. Just too many players in front of him plus making a strong charge on Southern Hills is a very tough task.

Looks like he had things settled down after a up and down front nine, but the bogey, bogey, bogey finish really hurt.

Still its a good experience for Dustin and he really has little to lose tomorrow so he can swing free and easy.

I think he started on 10, so this would have been the first nine. Southern Hills is playing about 3 strokes tougher than Cedar Ridge. He will need a career round tomorrow.

Dustin is 4-over after 9-holes on Southern Trails today to put him at +11 for the Tournament. The cut is projected right now to be at +8.

Unlikely, that Dustin can shoot 3-under over his final 9-holes on Southern Trails.

Kemmer had a heck of a round at Southern Hills today. Shot a 71 and looks like he'll make the match play portion.

Especially considering he has yet to make one birdie thru his first 27 holes of the tournament. I know he can get on a hot streak, so hopefully he'll turn it up and take some chances to see if he can make the cut.

Dustin got his 1st birdie on #12, but then limped home with bogies on 4 of the final 6 holes to finish at +14 well off of the +8 cut line.

I'm sure a great experience for Dustin though. We need a strong senior year out of Dustin with what is otherwise a relatively young and inexperienced team.
