  • ESPN Div I Top 40

UGH!!! I see a Boise State at #20 and it makes me angry that we can't get the leadership, vision, finances, motivation, and desire to make football happen at WSU.
WSU needs football, needs the financial commitment, and needs the backing of the city. It CAN be done.
Come on AD Sexton: Step up to the plate!

It's time to trim 120 to 40 as ESPN.com writers draft their top programs.

However, for a good dose of reality read:

"Gap growing ever wider between college sports' haves, have-nots"

    Note concluding paragraphs:

So until the nation digs itself out of recession, mega-powers such as Florida, Alabama, USC, Notre Dame and Michigan will patch their roofs -- or, in some cases, expand their stadiums -- while programs such as Stanford, Oregon State and Hawaii try to weather the economic storm as best they can.
"Even in the BCS conferences, there's a world of difference between Oregon State and Southern Cal," Fulks said. "Then you get outside the BCS, and those poor schools, they're really getting busted."

Just as there is a huge difference between a K-State and a UT or OU. However, I'd rather watch competitive football in the fall cheering for a team I care about in contrast to reading about teams with which I couldn't care less.

How long did it take Boise State to get to where they are today? How much has it cost their other sports? I'm not willing to add football for the sake of having football, or at the risk of dragging down the rest of the athletic department. Therefore, it is not financially feasible to bring back football now or in the foreseeable future, IMO.

I think you pretty much ariticulate the feeling of many Shocker fans who indicate an apathy towards WSU football. Or at least the fear of some Shocker fans regarding the demise of an overall competitive athletic program if WSU brings back football. As long as that apathy and fear exists, WSU will never have football again.
The Shockers received their highest basketball rankings when WSU had football. Granted we did not have as many women's sports at that time.
However, the city is much larger and we have a larger base of alumni.

It really comes down to support and if the majority feel as you feel, then it will never be financially feasible because people won't belly up to the athletic department bar and contribute.

However, when my kids attend college, I want them to not only get a good education, but to enjoy the college atmoshpere and campus life to the utmost.

If WSU had a mediocre baseball program, would you still feel the same way about football at Wichita State?
