That's an anomaly. T.G.I. Fridays isn't good anyway. I went to one in K.C. maybe 10 years ago and wasn't impressed. I went here in Wichita a few months ago and was still not impressed.

What really hurts is the fact that we don't have a Cheesecake Factory. The rest of our chain selection is just a carbon copy of Omaha's, Des Moines, Tulsa, etc. etc..

Pizza Hut left town because they had a very hard time recruiting young people to come to Wichita to work. Wichita has changed A LOT since Pizza Hut left. Just the addition of Old Town has really opened up some possibilities for young people. I even know kids that come down from Lawrence and K.C. to party in Old Town.. Things are getting better but we will really be rocking when the arena and all the subsequent private investment gets rocking. Downtown Wichita is going to change at a VERY fast pace over the next 5 to 10 years -assuming the Peterheads of the world are held at bay.

        P.S.

Please read the thread on "Peterjohn is a Moron" if you haven't already. This idiot is the single greatest threat to Wichita's future. Get involved with the opposition's campaign party and build your resume in the process. Trust me, if Peterhead gets in office Wichita is going to suffer...

But i have some thoughts and will post them here tomorrow when not typing on bell phone. It is all about the $ and not just the football bottom line, the program as a whole. The good thing is that we have a couple schools going about reestablish football and we can get ideas from them as well as learn from any mistakes they may make.

Do an internship or coop with Koch. They have plenty of jobs to satisfy your ambitions. You can even relocate if you desire but at least you will still be somewhat connected to Wichita. They pay well and the sky is the limit if you are aggressive and work hard. You better get good grades though and learning how to spell "fanance" would be a great start! ;-)

somehow, i mixed up my I's with A's

i'm just saying it maybe too late to save the lot of kids who graduate in 09', '10 (my class), and '11

you'll have a much better shot of saving a lot of the freshmen who currently enroll this year

I don't have anything against Wichita. I have not lived there for quite some time, but see some progress being made. I'm concerned about WSU. I graduated from KU, WSU, and a school in Boston. I never receive anything from WSU regarding fund raisers, needed donations, etc...
At the other two schools I receive frequent requests; especially from the school in Boston.
I think WSU has a beautiful campus, and it seems to make some strides in the school of entrepreneurship, business, etc... However, nothing much has changed in the surrounding area since I attended. There still seems to be a lack of on-campus housing, lack of night life, and a general lack of campus life. It seems to have become stagnant, lethargic, provincial.

I'm glad to read from another poster that Beggs seems to be doing a pretty good job. However, I believe in Wichita State. I believe that we are not maximizing our potential. I believe in WSU being a more traditional university. I also believe in WSU football.
Additionally, the city of Wichita is a fantastic place to raise a family, and has too many positives to count. A destination university with a strong and vibrant campus life would add to that mix.

I'm partial to WSU. It is my hometown school. WSU had something special. It was growing. The basketball, football, and baseball programs were on the upswing. That was in the early 80s.

WSU was accepted into the state system in about 1963 and dropped football a mere 26 years later - after fielding a team for about 90 years.
Who benefited the most. It was KU and KSU. Also, their enrollment shot up, and ours became stagnant.

I don't like it, and I believe the majority of the alumini don't like it either.

There is no doubt that Wichita has some weak points, but overall it's a good community. I really think that WSU and Wichita will benefit from a successful football program. Please checkout SHOCKER FOOTBALL NOW web blog. It has some great information about schools like WSU bringing football back or making improvements their current program. North Texas is going to build a new stadium for the Mean Green and it looks great. Keep the faith!!!!

UNC Charlotte votes to add football. Notice a trend here! More and more schools are adding football, even in tough economic times. We can do it.

Charlotte's board of trustees voted to accept chancellor Philip Dubois' recommendation to start a football program by 2013. But the unanimous vote came with qualifications.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte, the school that produced Cedric Maxwell, an unlikely Final Four appearance in 1977 and consistent NCAA basketball tournament teams ever since, wants to try its hand at football.

But it will only happen if the school raises a lot of money, quickly, in a lousy economy.

The school's board of trustees voted on Thursday to accept chancellor Philip Dubois' recommendation that Charlotte start a football program by 2013. But the unanimous vote came with qualifications: the school must raise about $45 million to pay for coaches, scholarships and a 12,000-seat, on-campus stadium.

So as Dubois and athletic director Judy Rose stood smiling in front of a backdrop with a new 49ers football logo and in front of a podium decorated with a green helmet, they both understood the difficult work ahead to end Charlotte's distinction as being one of the largest schools in the country without football.

"This is a transforming moment for this university," Dubois said. "We really need this community's support, so we hope they'll be there when we need them."

Initial support has been solid. Through Wednesday, the school had received commitments for 4,167 personal seat licenses at $1,000 each, nearing the goal of 5,000. But the school still needs major donors or sponsors to fill the rest of the void to allow the team to begin play in the lower-tier Football Championship Subdivision. The school's goal is to eventually play at the highest level of Division I.

It won't be easy. The city of Charlotte, the second-largest banking center in the country, has been hit hard by the financial crisis. Charlotte-based Wachovia was recently gobbled up by Wells Fargo, and Charlotte's Bank of America is struggling.

"I am the eternal optimist. We'll raise that money," Rose said. "And we're going to have a stadium on this campus. We can't do it without everybody involved, but who would have thought we would have had 4,167 [PSLs] at this point? ... I truly believe this will define this university."

The state school formerly known as UNC-Charlotte has been rapidly growing for years. It now has 22,000 students, with estimates that as many as 40,000 could be on campus in 20 years. For decades, groups have clamored to start football, and the school decided to take the plunge now despite the uncertain economic times.

"I wish we had started football in the '70s," board member Gene Johnson said. "If we don't start thinking about it now, it won't happen."

Rose said she dreams of following South Florida's path. A decade after forming a team, the Bulls moved to the Big East Conference and have been ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 the past two years.

Charlotte's sports teams have bounced around numerous conferences. The 49ers three years ago moved from Conference USA to the non-football Atlantic 10.

If the money is raised, Rose would need to find a conference for the football team and then hire a coach in 2011, who would put together the first recruiting class a year later. The team could begin play in the fall of 2013, possibly at Charlotte's Memorial Stadium until a campus stadium is built.

"For our athletic program today this decision today is comparable to the decision made years ago that we would become a research and doctorate-granting institution," Rose said. "Two milestones in the evolution of this university, and today is our day."

OK here is the way we fix both problems that concern WSU and Wichita. Its doubtful we ever attract someone like T Boone to kick some money our way even though we have a VERY wealthy individual living here. I know alot of people get tired of being asked to kick in money every time the University or City want to do something. The way we do this is call for a referendum to increase the Sedgwick county sales tax by 1/2 cent, just like we did to pay for the downtown arena. What did that generate in 18 months? Around 200 million? WSU gets half, the city gets the other half for projects to keep people here. I'm not talking about this thing going away in 18 months either. This is a continuing infusion of 75-80 million dollars a year to WSU for not only athletics but for academics also. Say a 50-50 split. What kind of athletic department would 35-40 million additional income finance. I'm not sure, but facilites would improve along with dare I say the addition of football and the others womens sports that would have to be added. Scholarships could be added to form a real live marching band maybe even one that would compete with Drum Line. Other scholarships could be added to expand the program they have in place to keep the top local kids here at WSU. They do this and they are going to need new housing for the kids. Dream about an Athletic Village as well as an Academic Village? With this kind of money they can go out and look at companies to coop new research. "Hey we happen to have 5 million dollars that we would like to coop with you in research on such and such and ultimatly share in any financial benefits that may be realised down the road". With that kind of money infused each year new schools could be brought about. What about a School of Dentistry or a School of Optometry. Something like this might be a hard sell in light of current economic conditions but remember we have 15,000 students and staff at WSU and how many Alumni in Sedgwich county? It took 41,000 people in Wichita to pass the last bond issue recently and the voter turnout would be less than in a general election. If the city is not able for one reason or another (legal issues) then we could pursue it on our own. Any benefit to WSU would have a ripple effect on Wichita and surrounding communities as well. Wichita should look at WSU as an asset and lend its support to such an endeavor. Just think of the endless possiblities that this would provide for not just now but for the future growth of WSU. Go Shox!

A marching band as good as Drumline? I'd rather shoot higher. An entertaining movie but not a great example of a good marching band, IMO.

Give me something along the lines of Phantom Regiment!

Like I said with that kind of money you can dream big time and the sky is the limit. It just seems like any grass roots movement to come up with the money its going to take and really do it right and not take money from other programs it needs to be something along this kind of line.
