The Sam Adams Multi appears to perhaps be sponsored by the Santa Barbara Track Club (SBTC) which is made up of former collegiate athletes.

SBTC had 3 athletes entered into the Decathlon. Looks like there are a couple of more former collegians, one sponsored by Nike and Austin Bahner of the Shocker Track Club.

In addition to the 2 WSU collegians there are 3 from Cal Poly and 1 from CSU Bakersfield plus several from smaller schools.

After Day 1 and 5 events (100, LJ, SP, HJ, 400) Hunter Veith is leading the competition with 3,991 points. Austin Bahner is 2nd at 3,968. Ben Johnson is 6th at 3,727.

Day 2 events of the Sam Adams Decathlon in Santa Barbara were the 110H, DT, PV, JT and 1500.

Shock Jr. Hunter Veith who lead after Day 1 won the event with a new PR of 7,610 points which is 2nd best in WSU history behind Austin Bahner's 7,847 set in 2013.

Bahner, competing for the Shocker Track Club, finished 2nd with 7,441 points.

Shocker So. Ben Johnson was 5th (2nd among collegians) with 7,082 points which is a new PR for Ben. 12th on the Shocker All-Time list I believe,

Pretty solid efforts by Hunter and Ben in their first decathlon of the Outdoor season.

I believe Shocker Jr. Austin Chippeaux set a new PR in the high jump at Friends over the weekend with a jump of 6-10.25

Shocker So. Kaden Griffin won the decathlon at the KT Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State this week with a very solid score of 6,816 obliterating his previous best set last year of 6,069 points.

Still early in the season but this is the 3rd best score in the Valley this seaon behind teammates Hunter Veith's 7,610 and fellow So. Ben Johnson's 7,082. Looks like Ben and Kaden may be pushing each other for a few years.

WICHITA, Kan.  --  Nikki Larch-Miller won the Heptathlon and Kaden Griffin won the Decathlon after the first two days of the K.T. Woodman Multi-Events Wednesday afternoon.

Next up at the KT Woodman on Thursday and Friday is the annual high school pre-state meet which will include athletes from 80 high schools. There is additional collegiate action Friday night and Saturday. Overall about 2,300 athletes will be competing this week at Wichita State. It will be interesting to see how joining The American will impact Coach Rainbolt's recruiting alhtough he has done pretty well recruiting Kansas kids over the years.

It looks like Hunter Veith has set a new PR in the long jump at the Texas Tech Red Raider Shoot-Out with a jump of 26-0.75 making him only the 3rd Shocker in history to pass the 26' mark. Hunter moves past Preston Carrington whose best was 25-11.5 into 3rd place all-time behind Don Duvall who hit 26-2.5 in 1980 and Randy Lewis' jump of 26-1.75 in 2002.

Hunter's jump did have a helping wind of 4.7 mph. Not sure if that impacts the record book or not.

Hunter has also recorded a PR in the 110H with a time of 14.35 seconds.

Anything over 4.0 wind does not count for record or NCAA qualifying purposes.

I think Shocker Jr. Austin Chippeaux, from Goddard, set a new PR today at the Shocker Open in the high jump clearing 7-0.25 breaking his previous best by 2 inches.

Looks like Zach Loesch has a PR in the Shot Put at 59-5. That puts Zach at #3 all-time at Wichita State.

Not a PR but Hunter Veith hit a very solid 24-9.25 in the long jump.

Cody Scheck with a PR of 47.37 in the 400.

Hunter Veith (21.48) and Kaden Griffin (21.48), two of the Shocks' decathletes, both PR'd in the 200.

Those are nice tune-ups for next weeks Valley Championship meet.

Too bad the Valley Championships weren't held this weekend. What great weather for a Track & Field meet.

The Shocker Men and Women are picked to win the Valley Championships this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Cessna Statdium.

The Shocker Men received 7 of 8 first place votes with UNI receiving the other vote.

I would encourage Shocker fans to try to take in part of this meet. I went to the last Valley Track and Field meet held at Cessna Statdium and really enjoyed it.

Friday, if you happen to be off, will primarily be Day 1 of the Decathlon and Heptathlon events and several field events a couple of which will be in the throwing pits south of Koch Arena. These events can kind of drag on although I enjoy the multi-events myself. The field events include the Hammer Throw and Javelin for for the men and women and the women's Pole Vault. The running events on Friday evening are 1,500m and 200m prelims that qualify athletes for the finals on Sunday plus the finals of the 10,000m runs which is the final event scheduled on Friday since those races take about 30 minutes + to run.

On Saturday, they finish off the Decathlon and Heptathlon events. Field events include Shot Put, High Jump and Long Jump for both the men and women. Running events are all prelims except for the days final events the men's and women's 3,000m Steeplechases.

Sunday brings the men's and women's triple jumps and discus finals and the pole vault finals plus the finals of 18 running events. 9 for the men and 9 for the women.

Personally I enjoy it all but if you said I just want to see the most concentrated, sustained, point scoring action I would recommend taking in the action on Sunday. The 18 running event finals for example will occur over a 3-hour span from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The men's pole vault and triple jump will also be going on inside the stadium at that time.

Right now the weather is looking pretty good for a track meet.

Nice article on Hunter Veith in the Eagle. Hunter has great potential in the Heptathlon and Decathlon if he can stay healthy. This year he has been healthy after breaking his let leg as a freshman and then tearing a ligament in his elbow a year later.

Hunter, however, will not be competing in the Decathlon at the Valley Championships this weekend. He is more valuable competing in multiple open events without the stress and effort of also competing in the Decathlon. Besides he already has the 9th best Decathlon score in the nation this year which should easily qualify him for the NCAA National Championships in that event. He will instead compete in the open pole vault, triple jump, javelin, long jump, high jump and perhaps a relay to maximize his scoring and contribution to the team.

                            This young man is stud.
