  • 2016 D-1 NCAA Track & Field West Preliminary Round

The Shockers have a record 25 athletes who have qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Lawrence, Kansas May 26-28. The top 48 marks in the Western half of the country qualify to participate. The top 12 finishers in each event advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 8-11.

15 of the Shocker qualifying athletes are from the Shocker men's team with Freshman standout Jared Belardo participating in both the long-jump and triple-jump. Jared has the 6th best triple jump and 16th best long jump in the West qualifying. Jared, who is from Leavenworth should have a very good cheering section behind him and he has a good shot at advancing the the NCAA Championships in both events. Shocker Sr. Shazz Michael Lindo (25th) will also participate in the triple jump and should be a consensus pick to the All-Name team. Shocker Jr. Hunter Veith of of Cheney will join Jared in the long-jump. He has the 17th ranked jump int he West.

The Shocks are well represented in the javelin and the hammer throw as well.

The Senior trio of Weston Cottrell (8th), Skylar Arneson (19th) and Taylor Goldsmith (26th) will represent the Shockers and small-town Kansas in the hammer throw. Weston and Skylar are both out of Nickerson High School and Taylor is our of Cheney High School.

The Junior trio of Damien Odle (10th), Dylan Reimer (14th) and Chase Pote (26th) will represent the Shockers in the javelin. Oh yeah they are out of Greensburg, Meade and Andale.

Throwing around hay bales must do wonders for a kid in the throwing events.

Freshman Austin Corley out of Adrian, MO is 26th in the 400m hurdles and qualifies in his first go round as a Shocker.

Junior Ugis Jocis is 32nd in the 1500m run.

Senior Tucker Davis is 33rd in the 200m dash.

Soph Jacob James is 41st in the 110m hurdles.

Senior Garrett Lynch is 41st in the high jump.

Junior Brady Johnson is 45th in the 10K.

With a really good showing it looks to me like Jared Belardo, Hunter Veith, Weston Cottrell, Damien Odle and Dylan Reimer all have at least a shot at qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Fun to watch both track teams continue their rise from league to regional power. I hope the trend continues. Good luck to all at the Preliminaries!

Schedule of events in which Shocker athletes are competing at the NCAA West Preliminary Round:

WICHITA, Kan.  --  Ten of the Shockers' school-record 25 qualifiers will compete Thursday at the NCAA Track and Field West Preliminaries at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.

Update: A few field events started today but nothing was finished due to weather. Everything postponed and will need to be re-scheduled.

Shocker Skylar Arneson finished 9th in the Men's Hammer Throw and will advance to the NCAA Championship meet in Eugene, OR. UNI's Justin Baker (5th) and SIU's Brad Sauer (6th) also will advance to Eugene. All 3 are seniors.

Shocker seniors Weston Cottrell and Taylor Goldsmith could not get it going and finished well out of the running.
