The Shocker men are off to a strong start in the Decathlon. It helps when 6 of the 10 entrants in the event are Shockers. Hunter Veith has the best score on the season at 7,300 coming in but he is dealing with a sprained ankle so not sure how he hold up. The form chart has the Shocks picking up a whopping 34 points in the heptathlon. A nice head start heading into the individual events.

    100m Dash: 1. Fr. Kaden Griffin 845, 3. So. Hunter Veith 827, 5. Jr. Kyle Troxler 784, 6. Fr. Ben Johnson 782, 8. Jr. John Nicholas 701, 9. Sr. Seth Buck 667

    Long Jump: 1. Veith 857, 3. Johnson 693, 4. Nicholas 688, 5. Griffin 652, 7. Troxler 621, 8. Buck 602

    Shot Put: 1. Johnson 695, 2. Buck 675, 3. Nicholas 654, 4. Veith 603, 6. Griffin 557, 7. Troxler 537

    Update:

    High Jump: 1. Veith 831, 3. Johnson 696, 4. Troxler 670, 5. Griffin 644, 6. Buck 644, 8T. Nicholas 593 (Only 8 competitors in the high jump -- SIU's Matthew Bigelow did not participate).

After 4 events I believe Hunter Veith is leading with 3,118 points followed by Ben Johnson at 2,866. Final event of Day 1 for the decathletes is the 400m run.

    Update:

    400m Dash: 3. Troxler 752, 5. Veith 723, 6. Griffin 723, 7. Johnson 693, 8. Buck 687, 9. Nicholas 650

Not sure when (or if) the Valley will post Day 1 totals but Hunter Veith appear leading the way with 3,841 points.

In the men's hammer throw the Shocks picked up 15 points with Weston Cottrell winning the event and Taylor Goldsmith finishing 4th. However, Skylar Arneson who had the 4th best throw of the season coming in failed to place as he fouled on all of his 1st 3 attempts and failed to make the finals.

Fortunately, the Shocks scored in line with the form chart as Weston had the 3rd best throw and Taylor the 5th best throw coming in and their out-performance offset Skylar failing to place. They did lose a great opportunity to start out above form however.

UNI picked up 11 points andx SIU 10 points in this event.,

Decathlon Scores at the end of Day 1:

        1. Hunter Veith, WSU 3,841
        2. Ben Johnson, WSU 3,559
        3. Austin Heitland, UNI 3,459
        4. Kaden Griffin, WSU 3,421
        5. Cal Urycki, SIU 3,398
        6. Kyle Troxler, WSU 3,364
        7. James Brandenburg, ILS 3,358
        8. John Nicholas, WSU 3,286
        9. Seth Buck, WSU 3,275
        DNF - Mathew Bigelow, SIU

Tomorrow's events include 110m hurdles, discuss, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m run. Hunter is a much improved hurdler and an outstanding pole vaulter. However, he is somewhat challenged in the throwing events as he is coming off of off-season Tommy John surgery.

I know there were some strong events for the Shockers today, but I can't imagine a much better start for the men.

With Brady Johnson finishing 2nd in the 10k, the Shocks have 55 points through 3 events scored, and lead SIU by 30.

Hard to see less than 19 points in the Decathlon which would make the lead 40+ through just 4 events.

Day 1 recap by Coach 'Bolt:

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  --  Weston Cottrell won the Shockers' first individual title of the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship with a throw of 213-10, but it was redshiort freshman Carlea Holt that stole the show on the first day with a school record throw of 164-11 in the javelin.

Bad news for SIU as Cal Urycki DNF's the 110 hurdles. That's going to make it tough for SIU to get any points in the Decathlon, and might add a point or 2 to WSU's total.

Update, Urycki has withdrawn. That insures all 6 WSU athletes will score. After the Discus the Shocks sit 1,2,3,4,5,8.

Hunter Veith extends his lead with the best height in the Pole Vault.

With 2 events remaining, he leads with other Shocks holding down the 2, 3, 4, 6 & 7 spots.

                  The Javelin and 1500 remain.

Shocks improve in the Javelin. They now hold down the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 spots.

The form chart that @goshox74: referred to shows 14 points for SIU in the Decathlon and 24 for the Shocks.

SIU will get 0 and barring a stunning result in the 1500, WSU will score at least 34 showing a net gain of 24 over SIU on form. That's going to be tough to make up I'd think.

Shocks go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 in the Decathlon with Hunter Veith picking up the title.

That's 34 points for WSU, +10 on form, and -14 on form for SIU.

Little hard to follow with a lot of prelims but form wise, the men only expected 1 finalist in the 100H and they got it, but will pick up a surprise point or 2 getting Ryes Powell into the 100 finals.

Also didn't expect to get anyone in the 800 final, and they won't.

Shot put went about as expected. Shocks picked up 5 as expected. SIU was 1 under form, UNI 3 under.

3000 Steeplechase underway. Shocks looking for 5 points according to form.

Ugis Jocis finishes 4th. Not sure if another Shocker cracked the top 8.

Kyle Larkin finished 7th for a bonus 2 points.

Shocks also picked up 3 finalists in the 400H but they do expect to get 13 points so that was probably expected. Should be a great final.

Through 7 scored events (Decath, Shot, Javelin, 10K, 3K, Hammer & High Jump) the Shox lead SIU by 58 points. Still waiting on the long jump results where WSU looks to pick up 14 more points according to form.

                              A truly spectacular day.

In keeping with the theme of the day, WSU get the championship from FR Jared Balardo and beats their form by 3 while SIU misses theirs by 7.

WSU leads SIU by 67 after 8 events scored.
