  • 2016 Outdoor Track

The Shockers begin the outdoor season this week in Texas. The multi's will compete Tuesday/Wednesday at Rice while the rest of the team will compete Friday/Saturday at UT-San Antonio. These are very early in the season so don't expect to see a ton of great results but the Shockers should be strong outdoor so who knows. Here is the GoShockers press release ... http://www.goshockers.com/news/2016/...two-meets.aspx

Paul Raymond, competing in the 10,000 meters Friday morning in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, set a personal record with a time of 29:55.17 and improved his Top 10 All-Time standing at WSU from seventh to fifth.

Ugis Jocis ran a personal record 3:44.39 in the 1,500 meters to finish first in his section and improve his Top 10 All-Time WSU mark from sixth to No. 4.

STANFORD, Calif.  --  All four Shocker distance runners set personal records and entered or improved their Top 10 All-Time ranking in competition Friday in California.

Shocker Jr. Hunter Veith had a real nice performance on Day 1 of the decathlon at the KT Woodman meet at Cessna Stadium just missing a 4,000 point day as he finished with 3,999 points.

I was intrigued with Hunter's potential when he signed out of Cheney High School in 2013 but he has battled injuries so far during his Shocker career. He did win the Valley Indoor Heptathlon this year and hopefully he is on his way to great success in the Decathlon. Keeping my fingers crossed that he avoids the injury bug over the final 2 years of his career.

Not sure how good Hunter is in the Day 2 events which include 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m run.

Austin Bahner is the Shocker all-time record holder in the decathlon with 7,847 points. Not sure if Hunter has a shot a that or not tomorrow.

Watch live here. Day 2 multi events start at 1:00 pm.

Correction on Day 2 start time. Decathlon events start at 10:30am and the Heptathlon at 11:45am.

Hunter Veith finished 2nd in the 110m hurdles with a PR 15:04. According to my decathlon scoring calculator that is worth 845 points so Hunter off to a good start.

Hunter was only able to throw 31.69m (104') in the discuss which is good only for 498 points. That makes it pretty much impossible for him to challenge Austin Bahner's school record.

At this point Hunter's weak events appear to be the throws (shot put and discuss) which it is not to unusual for decathletes. Hunter still has a 200 point lead after 7 events.

The young man in 2nd place, Jayce Thomas out of Missouri Southern, is a very nice looking athlete as well and he hit a solid pole vault of 4.7m (15-5) to score 819 but Hunter responded with a big PR of 4.8m (15-9) worth 849 points stretching his lead to 249 points with the javelin and the 1,500m run to go. Usually Cheney kids are pretty solid in the javelin.

Apparently Hunter is normally a storng javelin thrower but is having some issues with his throwing elbow and is throwing well short of his norm today. Apparently, one of the injuries Hunter has had required Tommy John surgery so he is only throwing at about 75% of his pre-surgery form.

Hunter finished the day off with a solid 1,500 meter run finishing in 4:46.38 to finish the decathlon with a winning score of 7,300 with Missouri Southern's Jayce Thomas 2nd at 7,082 points.

Here are the final decathlon scores: http://shockernet.net/forum/showthre...219#post654219

I think Hunter has quite a bit more in the tank if he can get fully healthy and stay reasonably healthy. Seems like when it comes to the multi-events that staying healthy is at least half the battle.

Kudos to former Shockers Cassie Craig and Aaron Young for their commentary on the video stream of the K.T. Woodman decathlon and heptathlon. I thought they did a very good job with their commentary and added a lot of interesting insights especially in the pole vault and the javelin. Aaron Young said something I have never hard before when he said the javelin was probably the toughest event on your body in track and field. He has seen ruptured Achilles tendons, ankle injuries, knee injuries, back injuries, shoulder injuries and elbow injuries for athletes in the javelin.

Cassie, from Maize, was a pole vaulter and sprinter for WSU from 2009 to 2013. Coming into this year she was 4th all-time in the indoor pole vault, 3rd in the outdoor pole vault and 6th in the indoor 60m hurldes. She tried to do multi-events as a freshman but gave that up after one year. She said throws coach John Hetzendorf would have to really bite his tongue when Cassie's javeline throws landed backwards.

Cassie is now an American Ninja Warrior: http://www.kwch.com/sports/work-it-o...rrior/37204828

Aaron, from Cheney, was a Shocker multi-eventer from 2008-2012. Coming into this season Aaron is #5 on the Shocker all-time heptathlon scores list and #5 on the all-time Decatholon list with a score of 7,324. Hunter Veith moved into the #6 slot today as he finished with a score of 7,300.

The Shocker Pre-State Challenge looks to be a pretty darn smart event for WSU to host in terms of recruiting. More than 70 high schools have athletes competing in this event. Hopefully, Coach Bolt and staff will find some future Shocker stars among the many high schoolers participating this week at Cessna Stadium.

              Friday's KT Woodman Action:

In the javelin, Chase Pote set a personal record by just under four feet as the highest collegiate finisher with a personal best throw of 216-3.25 (65.92m) on the Cessna Stadium infield. Pote finished just ahead of teammate Dylan Reimer, whose throw of 211-11.25 (64.60m) was fourth overall and the second-best by a collegian.

K.T. Woodman 10,000 meter record-holder Brady Johnson won the 2016 race in a time of 29:36.00, just over the record time of 29:21.39 he ran in 2015.

                Saturday's KT Woodman Highlights:

All-American Jared Belardo's long jump of 25-4.5 (7.73m) won the event, was a PR in the outdoor LJ and also tied for 16th-best in the country to date. KT Woodman Decathlon Champ was 2nd with a very strong jump of 25-2.75 (7.69m) also a PR I think although not 100% about that.

Belardo won his second title of the day with a triple jump of 52-6.5 (16.01m), improving his personal best to the second-best in Shocker history. He now sits in second behind Randy Lewis' triple jump of 55-1.5 (16.80m) in 2003.

2015 NCAA qualifier Weston Cottrell won the hammer throw with a distance of 206-9 (63.01m).

Jacob James won the men's 110 meter hurdles in a time of 14.27.

Lot of good things happening in Shocker Spring sports as long as you avoid the goings on at Eck Stadium. Shocker Damie Odle, a Jr. out of Cowley County CC and Greensburg KS, uncorked a school record 240-8 at the Shocker Open on Fridy. He improved his PR by whopping 9 feet. His throw is 16th best in the nation this year.

                  Congrats Damien.
