Our #5 quintuple bogeyed his first hole (9 on the par 4 9th). That's not good symbolism, Mr. Heinen!

Not only not good symbolism but kind of eliminates any safety net for the other 4 guys. Alec followed up his disastrous #10 with a bogey on #11 to go 6-over.

I see that Jacob Bishop is not in the lineup for his tournament. He was replaced by fellow Freshman Gage Ihrig. Jacob had shot 220 in the Valley Championship to 231 for Alex Heinen. Perhaps Coach Jones did not think Jacob's game fit this particular course very well. Maybe an injury issue?

The team has live course tryouts before every tournament. I don't know the particulars here, but it's more likely than not that Gage simply outplayed him last week on the course.

I could see that working for golf. That makes sense as long as it is over several rounds. So far today Gage is off to a bogey-bogey-bogey start. Perhaps a bit of nerves.

Gage bounces back from his slow start with a birdie to steady his boat. Alex has now made 3 pars in a row after his disastrous start.

Grant Bennett and LCB off to good starts. Grant has birdied 2 of his first 3 holes and LCB birdied his first hole.

Conrad Walcher has been solid so far at 1-over after 4 holes.

Rudy, we just lost our one-car safety margin, pal.

Let's see if @WstateU: can give us the immediate gif/video/pic/meme reference as he's so often does.

Oops, you're right. It was #10, not #9.

The guys are doing well early, tied for 6th.

The guys are finished with the back 9 and are currently in 7th place.

5 other teams started on the back 9.

The finish of teams (Pre Tourney Ranking) that started the back 9 are:

St Marys (11) and Virginia (5) were both +1
                    WSU (12) was at +6
New Mexico (4) and Idaho (13) were both +9
                    Georgia (6) was a +10.

What are the rules on teams advancing? I read that the top 8 teams advance. Evidently they only use the top 4 scores for the team score.

The top 5 teams and the top individual not on one of the top 5 teams advance.

The team score is each day's top 4 scores, so each day a different team member could be the throw away score.

The Shocks end the first day with a team score of +5, putting them current in 3rd. They are 9 strokes out of first. OU had a tremendous day at -4.

Grant Bennett is tied for 3rd at -2.

                              Great first day!
