Shocker Men's Outdoor Track & Field 2015

On Friday, Brady Johnson ran a 14:06.58 to win the 5K at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, breaking Mornay Annandale's 24-year old WSU record of 14:07.91 set in 1991. Brady is a sophomore from Plainville, Kansas.

On Saturday at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge Ryan Hocker won the 800 meters in a time of 1:51.48, Jon Duvall won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 51.37, Ethan Pearson won the pole vault with a height of 15-9.0 and the 4x100 relay team of Marcus Moeder, Cody Schreck, Rhys Powell and Grant Ralston won in a time of 41.25.

In the Javelin, WSU went 2-3-4 with Dylan Reimer (224-04), Aaron True (208-9), and Chase Pote (203-9), respectively. WSU also got runner-up finishes by Tate Annis in the long jump (23-8.25), Weston Cottrell (197-01) and Brady Johnson in the 1,500 meters (3:50.67).

Shocker Jr. Wes Cottrell continues the recent stretch of new school records breaking the 24-year old school mark in the Men's Hammer Throw with a toss of 209', 2.5". breaking the old record of 205' 9+ set by John Hamilton in 1991.

The Shocker men have been picked to finish 1st ahead of Indiana State in the upcoming Valley Outdoor Championship meet this weekend. Wichita State received 7 first place votes and a total of 63 votes and the Sycamores picked up the other first place votes and were at 51 votes. This should be a very fun meet to follow or attend if you have the time and inclination to travel to Normal, Illinois.

The final form chart on the men's side has Wichita State at 166, Southern Illinois at 133.5, Indiana State at 126 and Loyola at 119.

Of course, the form chart's won't actually tell the tale.

The javelin is the big event for both the Shocker men and the Shocker women.

Looks like the track & field teams will also be dodging raindrops this weekend in Normal. Not sure what kind of impact that might have on the outcome.

Decathlete Hunter Veith is out with an elbow injury, robbing WSU of the MVC’s points leader (6,562).

IIRC Hunter was injured last year as well and missed the Valley outdoor championship. I don't know if he can compete in selected individual events or not. Hopefully, the Shocks depth will have enough fire power where Hunter's injury won't be a factor.

WSU picked up 16 points in the hammer throw (vs the form chart at 17) and SIU picked up 17 points (vs the form chart at 16)

After the 1st day of the Decathlon looks like the Shocks could underperform the form chart by 6 or 7 points and that is primarily due to Hunter Veith not being able to compete due to injury.

Yet to be scored today are the javelin where the Shocks are looking to score big points and the 10K where the Shocks are looking for solid points.

Shockers Ugis Jocis and Robbie Martinez qualified for the 1500M finals. Ugis one his heat and had the fastest time in the qualifying races. Robbie also qualified but had the slowest time of the 10 qualifiers so he needs to pick it up a little bit tomorrow to get in the scoring.

Cody Sheck was the lone Shocker to qualify for the 200M finals but that was as expected.

Congrats to Weston Cottrell for breaking his own WSU school record in the hammer throw where he cashed in 2nd place points.

While the Lady Shocks made a big move vs the form chart late in Day 2 in the high jump the Shocker Men underperformed expectations a little while SIU had a huge result in the long jump. SIU outperformed the form chart by 15 points while the Shocks underperformed by 3 points. That is a whopping 18 point swing in expected scoring. Most of the outperformance by SIU was at the expense of Indiana State (-9) and Loyala (-12) but the bottom line it greatly enhanced Southern Illinois chances of winning the meet.

In fact, projected scoring now has SIU with 153 points to the Shockers 147 points. Hopefully, the Shocks can find a way to recapture those 6.5 points or more somewhere along the final 13 events to be completed on Sunday.
