  • Shocker Men's Golf - 2014 Fall Season

Shocks playing pretty well in their first outing of the fall at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan as they sit in 6th place after the 2 Saturday rounds but they are only 5 shots out of 2nd place.

5-7 Soph Grant Bennett is leading the way for the Shocks 141 followed by 6-4 RJr Alex Heinen at 142. I guess that's the long and the short of it.

5-11 Fr. Gage Ihrig out of Goodland shot a very solid 145 in his Shocker debut.

Actually, if 5-7 Fr. Jacob Bishop out of Edmond, OK, who is playing as an individual, was on the 5-man team in place of fellow Freshman, 6-1 Conrad Walcher out of Oklahoma City, the Shocks would be in 2nd place. Plus the Shocks best returning golfer from last year, 5-7 Sr Louis Cohen Boyer, didn't play his best finishing with a 152.

Looks like the Shocks have some good little guys and some good young talent.

Host Michigan leads by 16 strokes, faring much better than the Michigan football team did on Saturday.

    Live Stats

The Shocks are off to a 1-under start in Round 3, but again are not getting any benefit of the 2-under start by Jacob Bishop.

Back-to-back birdies on 5 and 6 by Louis C-B drops the Shocks to -3 on the day. However, Shocks still in 6th 2-strokes behind Kansas and Wisconsin.

Back-to-Back-to-Back birdies by Grant Bennett now has the Shocks at -4 on the day. Gage Ihrig is falling back so we need a good score out of Conrad Walcher today. Conrad is currently +1 after 12 holes.

Unfortunately, the Shocks are not gaining any ground as Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Kansas are also -4 on the day and Penn State is -3 for the day.

Shocks still in 6th, 1 shot back of Wisconsin and 2 back of Penn State.

A double-bogey by Alec Heinen on the Par 3 No. 12 hole drops the Shocks back to -2 on the day. The are still in 6th but now trail Wisconsin and Penn State by 3 shots and are only 1 shot ahead of 7th place San Jose State. The bottom 4 teams are way back.

The Shocks are still at -2 but have moved into 5th place as Eastern Michigan has fallen back. The Shocks were hurt by double-bogey 6 by Louis C-B on the 17th hole.

That was offset by Grant Bennett's birdie on 15 and Conrad Walcher's birdie on 17.

Louis C-B shot a 2-over today. Gage Ihrig finished +7 and will be our throw-away score. Grant and Alec have 3 more holes to score.

Jacob Bishop, playing as an individual, recorded a 1-over 72 today and that included a triple-b on the 18th hole. If Jacob could have made par on 18 he would probably be looking at a Top 10 finish in his collegiate debut.

Alec Heinen finishes with 4 pars to put a 1-over 72 on the board. That was he most consistent stretch of today's round. His 1-over consisted of 10 pars, 4 birdies, 3 bogies and a double bogey.

Shocks still hanging in a 5th place tie with Eastern Michigan and will finish first. Grant Bennett is the only Shocker yet to finish.

San Jose State has rallied to join the Shocks and Eastern Michigan in 5th place. Shocks will finish 1st so they will probably need either a blazing finish by Grant over his last 3 holes or some help from SJS and EMU.

Grant finishes par-par-par to preserve a final round 4-under 67. A very pretty looking scorecard. 14 pars and 4 birdies. At this point he and Cole Miller of Penn State have the low round of the day.

He is at 5-under for the tournament with scores of 70+71+67=208. That puts him in a 3-way tie for 3rd in the medalist race but there are a lot of guys at the top of the leaderboard still on the course. Very nice effort though for the diminutive Shocker sophomore.

Now we will just have to wait it out to see how SJS and EMU finish. The Shocks finished the tournament at 9-over. The U-M Golf Course is apparently not overly tough although #12 is a 246 yard Par 3.

Shocks finish in a tie for 6th with Eastern Michigan as San Jose State picked up a couple of strokes late. Shocks were 16 shots behind the host Michigan but were only 6 shots out of second.

Grant Bennett did finish in a 3-way tie for 3rd on the individual player leaderboard.

Shocker Men are in Ft. Collins today and tomorrow at the Ram Masters Invitational hosted by Colorado State.

                    Live Scoring.

Shockers currently in 7th place in the 15 team filed mid-way through Round 1. Louis C-B (-1), Jacob Bishop (+1) and Grant Bennett (+3) are playing well enough but the Shocks are having trouble coming up with a solid 4th round today. Gage Ihrig is +5 and Alex Heinen is +6. Gage was -5 on his 1st 6 holes and is even par over his last 5 so hopefully he can hold it together over his final 7 holes.

It would appear that the Fort Collins CC is a somewhat tougher challenge than the U of M course they played last week at Ann Arbor.

                    Lot's of bogeys today.

The Shocks finished the 1st round in a 3-way tie for 8th with a 15-over 295. Grant Bennett actually turned out to be the throw away score at +7 while Gage Ihrig and Alex Heinen were able to gather themselves and shot +5 and +6 respectively. LCB lead the way with a 1-over 71. Freshman Jacob Bishop posted a solid 3-over 74.

Only 7 shots separated the Shocks from 3rd. 2nd round just getting under way.

The Shocks have moved into 4th place just about mid-way through Round 2 as other teams have fallen back while the Shocks are playing pretty clean golf so far. The guys are playing the front 9 much better this afternoon than they did this morning.

Grant Bennett is struggling at 9-over after 10 holes in Round 2. So it looks like LCB, Jacob, Alec and Gage will have to carry the load in Round 2.

The Shocks are still in 4th but it is a 5-way tie for 4th with 5th place Rice only 1 shot behind that logjam.

The Shocks stumbled down the stretch of this afternoon's 2nd round and now sit in 10th place after scoring an 17-over 298 (vs 15-over 295 in Round 1).

Alex Heinen led the way in Round 2 for the Shocks with an even par 70. LCB followed with a 74, Gage Ihrig a 75 and Jacob Bishop a 78.

Grant Bennett, who had 3 double-bogeys in his Round, shot an 11-over 81 was not counted.

Hopefully, the Shock will be able to move up a few spots in tomorrow's 3rd and final round.
