  • 2014 MVC Men's Golf Championship on Apr 28th - 29th

The Shocker men are playing in their final tournament this weekend at the Boilermaker Invitational hosted by Purdue.

The Shocks are doing OK as they sit in 6th after the first two rounds with the 3rd and final round to be played tomorrow.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- Chandler Rusk sits in a tie for fifth with a 144 (74-70) as the Wichita State men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday at Kampen Course.

However, I did notice that the Shockers are playing without their best golfer Jr. Louis Cohen Boyer. Hopefully, Louis will be available to the Shocks for the Valley Championships next week.

Just happened to be at Tallgrass yesterday and the Shocker golf team was practicing. Talked to an asst coach and he said Louis Cohen Boyer would be playing this weekend. Said he missed the last tournament to stay home to take care of stuff that needed to be taken care of.

36 holes today and 18 tomorrow. Depending on the weather. Rain supposed to start at 5pm this afternoon through about 2am Tuesday morning. Tomorrow morning is expected to be dry rain starting up again around noon. Temps are mostly in the 50's and low 60's.

Hopefully, they get all 36 in today and perhaps move tomorrow's start up to get the final 18 in before the rain returns.

Just past the midway point of Round 1 and the Shocks are at +3 leading Loyola by 3 strokes and 5 strokes up on Bradley and Illinois State.

Alec Heinen with an Eagle and a Birdie in his last 4 holes improved from +5 to +2 and is the 1st Shocker to finish up.

Grant Bennett is the 2nd Shocker in the clubhouse at +6. Unless one of our other guys blow up that is probably our throw away score for Round 1. Only 5 more holes to score for the remaining 3 Shockers.

Louis Cohen Boyer is finished with his first round at a+4 which I'm sure is a little disappointing for him. Louis came in averaging 1-over par in his 29 rounds this season. Only 2 holes remaining to score.

Chandler Rusk finished with a bogey but he still lead the Shockers in Round 1 as he finished with a very solid 1-under 70.

Calvin Pearson finishes up with a par to close out a solid 2-over 73 effort.

Shocks complete the 1st round at 7-over giving them a 5-stroke lead over Northen Iowa and a 6-stroke lead over Illinois State. Bradley is in 4th 14 strokes behind the Shocks.

Coming in the Coaches were predicting a battle between the Shocks and Illinois State for the Championship and it certainly looks that way after Round 1. Northern Iowa is right in the mix as well but were picked to finish 7th so you wonder if they can hang in there for the full 3 rounds.

Just like the Shocks, perhaps even more so, Illinois State was hurt by the performance of their #1 golfer, Parker Frieburg, who had the Redbirds throw away score in Round 1 at +9.

Illinois State's Freiburg looks like his is determined to make up for his poor 1st round as he birdies 2 of his 1st 3 holes.

Shocks are already at +7 in Round 2 about 1/3rd of the way through. That will make it tough to match the 7-over score the put up in Round 1. Stocks still with a 2 stroke lead but the leaderboard is definitely tightening up among the Top 4.

The Shocks lead has now disappeared half-way through Round 2. The Shocks and Redbirds are tied for 1st at +17 with the Panthers and Braves only 1 shot back at +18. Bradley has already made up 13 strokes on the Shocks shooting 3-under at this point to the +10 the Shocks have put on the board for Round 2.

Play was suspended at 4:30 pm due to lightening in the area with all players having completed anywhere from 9 to 12 wholes for each team.

Wichita State and Northern Iowa share the lead at 18 over.
Bradley and Illinois State 2 shots back at 20 over.

It appears to be a 4-team dogfight with the 5th place Drake 16 shots behind the leaders. The Shocks have had the poorest 2nd round of the 4 teams battling at the top. Maybe this break will allow them to regroup. They may be able to get back on the course this evening. Obviously, the course conditions will have change with the rain that is moving through the area.

Looks like the are done for the day. The 2nd round will resume tomorrow at 8:00 am CDT.

Shocks need to come out playing well. With the weather as it is you just never know when the tournament will come to and end. Need to get in front and stay in front.

The Shocks at +22 after 2 rounds takes a 1 shot lead over Illinois State into the Final Round.

Bradley is in 3rd place 6 shots back at +28 and Northern Iowa is another 2 strokes back at +30.

I don't think any other teams are in contention. Missouri State is next in line at +39 (17 shots behind the Shocks).

The hourly weather forecast shows rain showers starting at around 4:00 pm so if that holds they should be able to get Round 3 in today.

Going down to the wire between the Shocks and the Redbirds. With 9 holes remaining to score the Shocks are 1-stroke up on the Redbirds. Both teams are at an outstanding +2 on the day. It will come down to who can finish the strongest.

Louis Cohen Boyer is in the Clubhouse for the Shocks with a 3 under 68 in Round 3.

Soph Alex Heinen finishes birdie-birdie-par to put the Shocks up by 3. Alex finished his Round at 3-over 74 and the Shocks are now at even par on the day with only 3-holes that count yet to score.

Bradley and Northern Iowa have stumbled badly and are out of it.
