WOW...awaiting the results, but I think we were only outscored 12-8.....
Yes, but we needed to pick up 1 point on Indiana State and we lost 4. About our only chance now is for a DQ on INS in the 4x400.

Indiana State is favored to pick-up 4 on the Shocks in the 4x400.

I think we are going to come in at 2.13 -- beating the record the Shockers established last year.

When you lose a meet this close you can look back at a lot of what if's. Personally, I think we lost this meet to injury. At least I am assuming that is why Hunter Veith was not available to compete. Hunter was probably good for as many as 12 to 20 points in this meet.

A healthy Hunter probably is 2nd in the Decathlon and probably around 5th in the TJ, LJ and HJ. That would be worth 20 points (plus he may have pushed a few Sycamores lower in the scoring as well in the process).

        • Loyola wins the race, Indiana State 2nd, WSU again faltered during the exchanges and finished 6th.

Great meet and ISU was just a little too tough today, and as @1972Shocker: said, the absence of Hunter was a huge difference in the outcome.

          Great job guys!

            • again, congrats Shox, as I mentioned in the women's thread, pre meet polls were flip flopped in the end with ISU winning the men's and WSU the women's. GREAT meet, VERY competitive. Injuries and mistakes played a role in both meets obviously. Good luck at the NCAA meet!

              • Nice of the Valley not to complete posting of the results for the men. I guess not a big deal. Just typical lackadaisical effort by the Mo-Val.

I guess will find out tomorrow what the final totals were for the men.

Even though they did not post the final results online I believe Loyola won he 4x400 race. Loyola was leading SIU by 1 point going into that race so I believe Loyola finished 4th and SIU 5th overall.

I'm going with that in computing the AST standings.

                    • Looking ahead to next year we are losing 15 seniors. The key losses will be Austin Bahner, of course, Kelvin Businei, Adam Esau, Mike Flores and DJ Lindsay.

I think Hunter Veith is capable of developing into a reasonable facsimile or even an improved version of Austin Bahner if he can stay healthy and motivated.

After that we will just have to see how some of our younger talent develops be we had a very good group of underclassmen this year so no reason not to expect the guys to be very competitive in the Valley again next year.

We signed Kord Ferguson out of Ottawa, KS High School where he is reportedly the top thrower in the Nation at the high school level.

We signed sprinter Tyler Gillis our of Kearney, NE. His high school best in the 100M at the time of his signing of 10.79 would have taken 3rd in this year's MVC Championship, his 21.79 in the 200M and 22'6" long jump would be just outside the Top 8 and he may very well have improved on those numbers this spring.

Ryan Schadler from Hesston, KS was right behind Tyler Gillis in the 100M at 10.80, had 21.9 200M, a 23'0" long jump (that would have scored in this weeks Valley Championship) and a solid 49.8 in the 400M. Again he may have improved on some of those PR's this spring.

We also picked up 3 high school distance runners.

                      • Shocker Sr. Austin Bahner, after being somewhat hamstrung by his hamstring this past outdoor season is competing in the Decathlon at the USA Track and Field Championships being held at Sacramento State University this week.

After Day 1 (Thursday) Austin is in a tie for 7th among 16 competitors, 2 of whom have withdrawn due to injury, with a score of 3,863 points, trailing the leader Trey Hardee by 578 points.

                        Decathlon Scoring Spreadsheet

No way Austin can catch Trey Hardee. However, he is only 210 points out of 2nd place. OTOH, he is also only 255 points out of 13th place. Not sure Austin is in peak condition as he is well behind his PR's for the 1st five events. It will be interesting to see how he holds up on Day 2.

The final 5 events (110H, DT, PV, JT and 1,500M) begin this afternoon at 1:45 PM CDT.

You can follow the results here.

                        • Austin off to a bad start with a 14th (last place) finish in the 110H and has fallen to 10th place.

                          • Austin did recover to finish 2nd in the discuss moving up from 5th on his 3rd and final throw after fouling on his 2nd throw.

That moves him up to 9th place but there is only 199 separating 4th thru 11th place with 3 events remaining. The Pole Vault is not a particularly strong event for Austin although he has improved quite a bit over the last 2 years. He is a decent javelin thrower. It may come down to how much he has left in the 1,500M, always a big question mark, to see if he can move up into maybe a top 5 finish.

                            • Something I never thought I would see. UNI's Daniel Gooris no heighted in the pole vault. He missed all 3 of his attempts at his opening height of 16 feet. Gooris has cleared 17-9.75 in the high jump. I wonder if he is operating at full capacity.

One other athlete, Alex McCune, opened at 15-9 and no heighted. Something you simply can't survive in the decathlon.

Austin's opening height was 14-1.25 on which he missed his first attempt, but made his 2nd attempt and has cleared 14-5.25 and 14-9 on successive jumps.

Sets up a really good opportunity for Austin if he can come close to his PR of 15-7.

Austin clears 15-1 on his 2nd attempt. Next up is 15-5, just about his limit.

Maybe it's not Austin's limit. He cleared 15-5 on his first attempt.

Austin was unable to clear the next height at 15-9, but he finishes in a 3-way tie for 2nd at 15-5 worth 819 points in what is a very good outcome for him in the pole vault.

So the leader and heavy favorite to win the decathlon, Trey Hardee, has made one attempt and cleared 16-4.75. He passed at 16-8.75 and the missed all three attempts at 17-0.75.

Austin has now moved into 5th place with the Javelin and 1,500M to go.

I have to go now but will check back later to see how Austin finishes.

Or maybe it's not Austin's limit. He clears 15-5 on his first attempt.

                              • Austin actually had a pretty solid javelin throw of 180-6 unfortunately that was only 9th best among this group of decathletes.

Austin finished off he day with a 4:43.41 in the 1,500M run finishing 8th in that event.

Overall Austin finished in 7th place with 7,512 points. Less than 100 points separated 4th thru 7th places.

Trey Hardee was the easy winner with 8,599 points which was 792 points clear of the 2nd place finisher.

Considering everything Austin had to deal with this year this was a good effort by him.
