MGLF Preview: SIUE Dolenc Invitational

The Black and Yellow enter with a retooled roster after graduating four players from last year's squad (Blake Lorenz, Zach Sokolosky, Aston Castillo and Tate Herrenbruck). Three reinforcements arrive in Wichita from Indian Hills Community College in Jose Miguel Ramirez, Jose Carletta, and Mitchell Revie, and a true freshman addition in Caden Cox.

Not sure why Jose Ramirez is listed as a senior. Looks like he played 2 years at Indian Hills prior to transferring to the Shockers.

The Shocks got off to a bit of a slow start but rallied enough to get to 1-under 283 in round 1 putting them in a 3-way tie for 7th place.

Michael Winslow in particular got off to a bit of a halting start. After recording 5 pars in a row he went 3 over on the final 4 holes of the front 9 to make the turn in 3-over. However, he righted the ship, to say the least, carding 6 birdies on 3 parts on the back 9 to come in at 3-under 68. Ty Adkins shot a relatively steady as she goes 2-under 69. Lucas Scheufler and Jose Carletta both carded 2-over 73's. Jose Ramirez had the throw away score at 3-over 74.

The Shockers moved up 5 spots to into a 2nd place tie with Bradley on the strength of a tournament best team round (so far) of 10-under 274.

The Shocks at 11-under for the tournament trail host SIU-E by 4 strokes heading into tomorrows final round. The Shocks actually had the team lead at one point in the 2nd round.

Michael Winslow continued his strong play from the back half of his first round to lead the Shocks with a 5-under par 66 and sits in a tie for 3rd on the player leaderboard at 8-under. 3 strokes off the lead. Ty Adkins match his 1st round 2-under par 69 and is in a 4-way tie for 14th on the players leaderboard. Newcomers Jose Carletta also contributed a 2-under 69 and Jose Ramirez a 1-under 70 to round out the Shockers 10-under team round. The Shocks don't often have all 4 scoring players come in under par. Lucas Scheufler's 4-over 75 was the throw away score.

Apparently either the course setup was made tougher today or the weather conditions were tougher, but in any case the scoring seemed to be higher than yesterday pretty much across the board.

SIU-E and the Shocks both came in with team scores of even par for the final round as SIU-E holds on for a 4-stroke win over the runner-up Shockers at 15-under to 11-under.

Michael Winslow was 3-over on the front 9 today but could not find the birdies on the back 9 has he made 9 pars on the back 9 after racking up 8 birdies and an eagle in the first 2 rounds yesterday. Michaels 3-over 74 put him at 5-under for the tournament and in a 5-way tie for 6th place.

Lucas Scheufler had his best round of the tournament today leading the Shocks on the round with a 1-under 70. Lucas finished the tournament at 5-over par.

Ty Adkins, after competing in on 2 fall events as a freshman last year, got his sophomore year off to a good start with matching par 71 today and finishing 1 shot behind Michael at 4-under in a 4-way tie for 11th place.

Newcomer Jose Carletta also shot a even par 71 today and finished at even par for the tournament in a 3-way tie for 23rd.

The Shockers other newcomer Jose Ramirez shot a 1-over 72 today and finished 3-over for the tournament.

Seems like a decent start for the Shocks after losing their 3 top golfers from last year (based on stroke average). A little hard to measure how this performance would stack up in the AAC.

Mitchell Revie replaces Sr. Lucas Scheufler in the 5-man lineup from the Shocks 2nd place finish at the season opening SIU-Edwardsville Invitational.

The Shocks finished round 1 at 9-over par and in in a 9th place tie with South Dakota State in the 12-team field (including Nebraska's B-Team) 18 shots behind Louisiana's 9-under par score. Not a good start.

Jose Ramirez 72 (+1), Jose Carletta 73 (+2), Mitchell Revie 74 (+3) and Michael Winslow 74 (+3) in Round 1. Ty Adkins had the throw away score at 77 (+6).

Round 2 is just getting underway.

The Shocks played much better in round 2 posting a 1-under par team score, putting then at 8-over for the tournament and moving up to a tie for 6th. Sam Houston State posted an 12-under team score in round 2 and is 11 strokes clear of the field at 17-under for the tournament. South Alabama -6, Nebraska -1, Lousiana at even par and Xavier at 4-over sit in the top 5 spots.

The Shocks 9-over round 1 put them behind the 8-ball.

Michael Winslow 68 (-3), Jose Ramirez 70 (-1), Jose Carleta 71 (E), and Ty Adkins at 74 (+3) contributed to the Shocks scoring in Round 2. Mitchel Revie at 75 (+4) had the throw away score.

Maybe with a good score tomorrow the Shocks could catch Xavier for 5th place. OTOH, 5 teams are within 3 strokes behind the Shocks.

Things didn't go so well for the Shocks in the 3rd and final round in Lincoln. As I mentioned after round 2 there were 5 teams within 3 strokes of the Shockers. 4 of those 5 teams passed the Shocks today. The Shockers reverted back to their Round 1 form with a 7-over par team score putting them at 15-over for the tournament and dropping them to 10th place ahead of only Omaha and Creighton and 1 stroke behind the Nebraska B Team. The Shocks finished 37 strokes behind 1st place Sam Houston State at 22-under with only South Alabama staying within shouting distance at 14-under par. They were the only 2 teams to break par for the tournament.

The only slightly positive note is that Creighton finished last, 25 strokes behind the Shockers. Ahhh!

The Shocks need to bounce back from a not very good showing there last time out in Lincoln. Lucas Scheufler is back in the line up and Jose Carletta is out.

The Shocks finished with a team score of 4-over par in Round 1 in Houston putting them in 9th in the 11 team field. Houston is not competing as a team as they have 3 players entered as individuals. However, the Rice B team is playing in the team competition.

Sam Houston at 15-under, Rice at 14-under and Abilene Christian at 13-under have pretty much separated from the field after round 1.

Jose Ramirez 70 (-2) Mitchell Revie 72 (E) Michael Winslow 74 (+2) and Ty Adkins 76 (+4) contributed to the Shocks 4-over effort. Lucas Scheufler had the throw away score at 78 (+6).

I think the Shocks had climbed all the way up to 5th place but fell off a bit at the end of round 2 and find themselves in 8th place at 3-over par after a 1-under par team scored in round 2.

Sam Houston and Abilene Christian at 25-under and Rice at 22-under continue to lap the field.

Jose Ramirez carded a second straight 2-under par 70 to put him at 4-under for the tournament and in a 4-way tie for 14th on the player leaderboard. Mitchell Revie 71 (-1), Michael Winslow 73 (+1), and Ty Adkins 73 (+1) rounded out the scoring in round 2 for the Shocks. Lucas Scheufler has been a non-factor today with his 2nd throw away score of the day with a 79 (+7).

The Shocks are only 2 shots behind 5th place Lamar so they could move into a top 5 finish with strong finish tomorrow.

The Shocks did close with their best round of the tournament coming in with a 6-under par effort in the 3rd and final round. The moved them to 3-under for the tournament and a 5th place finish. -The Shocks had the 2nd best team score in the final round 1 stroke behind ULMs 7-under par. ULM finished 4th at 13-under.

After shooting 25-under in yesterday's final two round Sam Houston came in a 2-under in today's final round but that was enough to edge Abilene Christian who also was at 25-under coming into the final round but only managed an even par team score today. Rice finished 3rd coming in at 1-under par today for to finish at 23-under. Scoring was much tougher to come by in today's 3rd round except for ULM and the Shocks.

Here is how the Shocks finished:

Jose Ramirez: 70+70+69 = 209 (-7) -- Nice consistent work from Jose. Finished in a 3-way tie for 9th on the player leaderboard.
Mitchell Revie: 72+71+72 = 215 (-1) -- Nice consistency from Mitchell as well.
Michael Winslow: 74+73+70 = 217 (+1) -- Improved round-by-round. Not terrible but Michael is capable of more.
Ty Adkins: 76+73+71 = 220 (+4) -- Improved round-by-round as well.
Lucas Scheufler: 78+79+76 = 233 (+17) -- Use the force Lucas, use the force.

MGLF Preview: 3rd Annual Grier Jones Shocker Invitational

The Shockers are looking defend their crown, as they have won the team title in each of the past two installments of the tournament. The team beat Utah Valley by four strokes for the crown in 2022 and Seton Hall by three in 2023. No Shocker has won the individual crown in the tournament's brief history.

All nine members of the 2024-25 men's golf team will compete in the tournament with four competing as individuals only.

I suspect the inclusion of the 4 juco teams is to some degree for recruiting purposes. Notice that 3 members of the Shocks starting 5 are transfers from Indian Hills CC. Now whether or not that is the best way to build a roster is debatable. Perhaps it is the best way for Wichita State.

It's a shame Winslow doubled the first or the birdie, birdie, birdie run on 2-3-4 would look spectacular at this point.

Considering that the 5 Shockers played the first hole in 6 over (team score of +4 on that one hole) it's somewhat remarkable that they've been able to right the ship so quickly and get to -2 as a team while still around the mid point of the front nine. The team have combined for 8 birdies vs just 1 bogey since that troubling first.

Denver's Jack Dozer, after a triple-bogey 7 on the par 4 14th responded on the next 3 holes with birdie-eagle-birdie to get himself back to even par an propel Denver into the lead at 2-over par at the end of round 1.

The Shocks are tied for 2nd with Xavier and Incarnate Word at 5-over par, 1 stroke ahead of Hutch CC. As WuDrWu mentioned the Shocks dug themselves an early hole on #1 so it could have been worse.

Jose Ramirez led the way again for the Shocks with a 71 (-1) followed by Michael Winslow 72 (E), Ty Adkins at 74 (+2) and MItchell Revie at 76 (+4). Jose Carletta had the throw away score at 79 (+7).

Of the 4 Shockers competing as individuals freshman Caden Cox was the best shooting a 75 (+3).

The Shocks avoided the 1st hole problems today getting 4 pars and 1 bogey on their way to a 2-under team score in Round 2 putting them at 3-over for the tournament. However, Incarnate Word and SIU-Edwardsville caught fire today with team scores of 8-under and 9-under respectively with Incarnate Word grabbing the tournament lead at 3-under par followed by SIU-E at 1-under and the Shockers at 3-over. So the Shocks have some work to do tomorrow to keep keep the tournament trophy in Wichita.

Jose Carletta had a nice bounce back from his 1st round 79 to lead the Shocks with a 2-under par 70. Michael Winslow and Mitchell Revie both shot 1-under par 71s and Jose Ramirez and Ty Adkins both shot 2-over par 74s with one of this scores thrown out. it is nice to have all 5 guys playing decent golf but it may take more than that to win this thing.

Among the 4 Shockers competing as individuals Lucas Scheufler and Connor Geist both shot even par 72.

On the individual leaderboard Michael Winslow is in a 3-way tie for 8th and Jose Ramirez is in an 8-way tie for 15th.

Incarnate Word's Ken-Marten Soo and Xavier's Kellen Dean shot 6-under par 66s in round 2. Both recorded 4 birdies and an eagle to go along with 13 pars. SIU-E's Alex Eickhoff shot a 5-under 67 with 5 birdies and 13 pars after shooting a 7-over 79 in round 1.
