  • 24-25 Shocker Men's Tennis

Wichita State men's tennis junior Luke Bracks has qualified for the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships at Leftwich Tennis Center this week in Memphis.

In the first round of 32 Luke, who is from Tulsa, faced the #1 seed Kenta Miyoshi, a Japanese import who plays for Illinois and lost that match 1-6, 4-6. That dropped him into a single consolation match against Sam Reeve, who plays for Memphis. That was a really close match with Luke prevailing in a very interesting super-tiebreaker in lieu of a 3rd set 6-7. 7-5. 10-8. In the super tiebreaker Luke found himself trailing by 3 points at 5-8 before running off 5 consecutive points to win the tiebreaker at 10-8.

In his doubles match Luke paired with Max Schmidhauser, a little used senior who plays for Azusa Pacific, and they where overmatched losing 1-6, 2-6.

Not sure how Luke fits into the Shocker's plans in 2024-25 but he only managed a 5-18 record in singles and 2-10 in doubles last year in what was very much a down year for Shocker Men's Tennis as the team finished 5-18 in dual matches on the season.

No idea what two expect this year. The Shocks graduated two players, Misha Kvantaliani who played primarily at the #1 and #2 singles, and Marcelo Sepulveda who played primarily at the #3 and #4 singles. The are getting senior Kristof Minarik back who played in 2 dual matches in the spring at #3 singles before missing the remainder of the spring presumably due to an injury. Richie King, a sophomore who played mostly #6 singles last year, is not on the 2024-25 roster.

The Shockers have a sophomore transfer from Queens College in Arenui Leuthi, who hails from Switzerland, and 2 incoming freshmen, Romanian Luca Mindrut and Englishman Ilias Worthington.

At this point it is pretty hard to see where any improvement over last year will come from for the Shocks but we'll see.

Looks like the Shockers are using this tournament as a vehicle to get experience for their younger guys against good competition. I am not sure the other teams participating will be doing the same but I suspect that will be the case. ORU, like the Shockers, struggled last year. OSU and Tulsa are solid progams. OSU made it to the round of 32 in the NCAA Championship Tournament last year losing to top-ranked Ohio State. Tulsa won the Men's NITT Championship last year. It will be interesting to see how the Shocker newcomers fare.

                          Wednesday, October 16

Singles - Qualifying Round of 32

[1] Ilias Worthington (Wichita State) vs. Riki Koshimizu (Saint Louis) - Worthington wins 6-2, 6-3.

[5] Luke Bracks (WSU) vs. Lucas Couy (Oral Roberts) - Bracks wins 6-4, 6-4

[11] Luca Mindrut (WSU) vs. Ryan Hollaway (Oral Roberts) - Mindrut wins 6-1, 6-4.

A saw a few games at end of Worthington's match and Mindrut's match. The freshmen from England and Romania, respectively, both look decent although I don't think their opponents were particularly strong players.

Saw the first few games and last few games of Bracks' match. From what I see he tries to run around his backhand quite a bit suggesting that his backhand may be a weakness in his game.

Good start for the Shocks but competition for these guys will be tougher moving forward.

Luke Bracks 12.3 (WSU) vs. Vojtech Petr 9.1 (Oklahoma) - Bracks wins 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) - Very nice win for Luke in his home town.
Vanja Hodzic 9.3 (WSU) vs. Alexander Okonkwo 9.2 (Tulsa) - Hodzic loses 3-6, 0-6

Luca Mindrut 14.8 (WSU) vs. Harry Rock 8.1 (Memphis) - Mindrut loses 1-6, 6-7 (9-11) - Good effort by the much smaller freshman against a tall, strong, rangy senior.

The number behind each players name is their International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Number which provides a global standard for players. It is a 40-1 scale, with 40 being a beginner player and 1 being an elite professional. Players have separate ITF World Tennis Numbers for singles and doubles.

So of the 7 Shocker matches in this round based in the ITF WTN the Opponents will be favored in 4 matches with the Shockers favored in 2 matches and with 1 match a toss up.

Kristof Minark's opponent, Okahoma State's Ian Bracks, is the younger brother of Wichita State's Luke Bracks. Luke and Ian hail form Tulsa.

Looks like the wind could be a factor today.

Not a particularly good day for the Shocks going 2-5.
