  • Shocker Men's Golf - Fall Season

The Shocks won their own Shocker Classic by 16 strokes over K-State 10 days ago. However, K-State was the only other D-1 school in the field. In fact, I think Grier is thinking of dropping the Shocker Classic because of the difficulty in attracting other D-1 schools to participate and replace that with a more challenging tournament on the road.

This week the Shocks traveled to Ft. Collins, Colorado and won their 2nd tournament of the fall edging the host Colorado State Rams by 1 shot in a 15-team field.

3 other Valley teams participated in the tournament. Drake, Northern Iowa and Illinois State finished 34, 44 and 46 strokes behind the Shocks.

Shocks continue to play well this fall as they lead the 12-team VCU Shootout by 7 after 36 with the final 18 scheduled for tomorrow.

Shocks had a really bad today. After being onl +4 after the 1st two rounds they shoot +19 in today's 3rd round and just barely hang on to 2nd place.

Not sure if weather was an issue today, but this will give HCGJ a tool to get his teams attention to make sure they stay mentally focuses.

Not sure you should even consider weather having any possible impact: #1 VA Tech had their best round (292,295,291), #3 LB St (296,296,296), #4 Maryland (297,296,298). Also #7 East Carolina had their best round (303,306,299).

Shocker men playing reasonably well at the Cal Tournament.

I noticed Hunter Sparks isn't playing. I don't know if he simply was beat out for the privilege or if he might be injured.

Hopefully, the Shocks can hold on to a Top 5 finish in what looks to be a pretty solid field.

The Shocks did not close well and ended up tied for 6th as they closed the tournament with an 8-over 292 after shooting 278 and 281 in the 1st two rounds.

Rafael Becker had a particularly tough home stretch shooting an uncharacteristic 6-over in his last 8 holes.

As I mentioned above Hunter Sparks did not play.

I guess their is a reason Cal is ranked #1 in the nation as they 46-under to win the tournament. The worst of their 5 players shot 3-under for the tournament. Cal's Brandon Hagy was medalist at 15-under and he shot 1-over in today's final round. Hagy had a crazy good stretch of 24 holes from the 11th hole in Round 1 through his 16 hole in Round 2 where he made 16 birdies. Heck that's tough to do on a miniature golf course.

According to today's article in the Eagle Hunter Sparks did not play at the Cal Tournament due to strep throat.

Hunter Sparks back in the mix and the Shocks pick up their 3rd tounament title of the fall at New Mexico State:

Three Shockers shot under 70 for the final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate and the Wichita State University men's golf team pulled away for its third team title in five fall tournaments.

Individually the Shocks finished 3rd (Hunter Sparks -6), 5th (Louis Cohen Boyer -4), 12th (Tyler Gann -1), 22nd (Rafael Becker +3) and 30th (Calvin Pearson +5). On top of that Shocker Jr. Chandler Rusk, competing as an individual finished 7th at -2.

                Very nice job guys.
