Shockers Break Losing Streak with Road Win Over UTA

Wichita State men's tennis team (4-16) ended their losing streak with a 4-1 win over the UT-Arlington Mavericks on Thursday afternoon in Arlington at UTA Tennis Center breaking an 8 match losing streak.

In a pretty competitive match the Shocks took 2 of the 3 doubles sets to go up 1-0 and picked up wins at the #2, #3 and #4 singles while losing at the #5 singles.

The #1 singles and the #6 singles were both abandoned at 1-1 in the 3rd set.

The Shocks have 2 more home matches to close out the regular season next Monday vs #72 Tulsa and Friday vs #69 South Florida.

Shockers Swept Away by Golden Hurricane

Playing their first home match in almost a month, the Wichita State men's tennis team was swept 4-0 by the 72nd ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Monday afternoon at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.

With the loss, the Shockers (4-17) fall to 0-5 against American Athletic Conference opponents this season and Tulsa (10-11) collects their third straight win.

The Golden Hurricane swept through the Shockers in doubles, picking up the point swiftly with a 6-1 win over Luke Bracks and Alejandro Jacome at court three, and a 6-3 win over Richey King and Misha Kvantaliani at court one.

Singles was closer than the final score would indicate, but Tulsa managed to complete the April Fools' Day sweep of the Shockers.

Seniors Shine as Shockers Wrangle South Florida Bulls

Wichita State men's tennis team collected a dramatic 4-3 win in their regular season finale over the South Florida Bulls on Friday afternoon at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex behind a dominant performance from seniors, Marcelo Sepulveda and Misha Kvantaliani.

With the win, the Shockers (5-17) pick up their first ever win over South Florida and pick up their first win over an American Athletic Conference opponent this season.

NIce to see the Shocks finish off what has been a very tough regular season with a Senior Day win.

Doubles was very close across the board, but the Shockers would ultimately prevail to grab the very important point. Misha Kvantaliani and Richey King would strike first, winning 6-4 over USF's 51st ranked doubles pairing of Erik Grevelius and Alvin Tudoric at court one.

Luke Bracks and Alejandro Jacome would fall 6-4 at court three, but the loss was quickly offset by Marcelo Sepulveda and Vanja Hodzic's 7-5 win at court two to seal the doubles win for the Black and Yellow.

Singles was another high-stakes battle, with multiple courts being decided in third sets and tiebreaks.

Hodzic would open the singles scoring with a 6-3, 6-4, win at court four to make it 2-0 Shockers.

The Bulls would respond quickly with a pair of wins at courts five and six over Bracks and King, evening the match at 2-2.

Next, Jacome would fall at court two, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-2, but Kvantaliani would pick up a near simultaneous win at court one, 7-6 (9), 7-5, toppling the 65th ranked Grevelius to tie the match 3-3, and send all eyes to Sepulveda's match at court three.

Sepulveda lost his opening set in a tiebreak 7-6 (3) but responded with a 6-2 win in the second set to force a winner-take-all third. The senior and Monterrey, Mexico native jumped on USF's Tom Pisane early, leaping out to a 4-1 lead that he wouldn't relinquish, going on to win the set 6-2, and clinch the 4-3 win for the Shockers.

In total on senior day, the Wichita State men's tennis seniors in Kvantaliani and Sepulveda went a combined 4-0 across doubles and singles to propel the Shockers to victory.

The top 4 seeds in the 12-team AAC will get 1st round byes in the AAC Championships coming up in a couple of weeks. The Shocks will very likely be of the the bottom 2 seeds and will player either a 5th or 6th seed. This will probably a very short stay for the Shocks but with the turnament in Tulsa this year travel will be pretty easy.

Men's Tennis Tabbed as 12-Seed in AAC Championship

Wichita State men's tennis team has been named the No. 12 seed in the upcoming American Athletic Conference Championship, which begins on April 18th in Tulsa. By my math that would seed the Shockers last in the 12-team filed. The top 4 seeds (Memphis, SMU, FAU and Rice) will get 1st round byes with the other 8 teams matching up on Thursday.

The Shockers (5-17) will play host and #5 seed Tulsa (14-12) tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

The WSU-Tulsa winner will advance to face off with the No. 4 seed Rice in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2:00 PM Central.

The Shocks were 1-6 vs AAC teams during the regular season with their only win a tight 4-3 win this past Friday on Senior Day. The Shocks lost to Tulsa 0-4 in Wichita on Monday of last week.

My expectations are for a quick down to Tulsa and back trip for the Shocks.

Shockers' Season Ends with AAC Loss to Tulsa

Wichita State men's tennis team's tough 2023-24 season came to an end losing in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Championship to the 5th seeded Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Shockers season ends with a record of 5-18

The Shocks won both the #2 and #3 doubles in tiebreakers to pull out the doubles point but the Shocks could not find any success in the singles.

The Shocks were pretty young outside of the 2 grad students, Misha Kvantaliani and Marcelo Sepulveda who were a combined 19-28 in their singles matches. The Shocks next most experienced player, junior Kristof Minarik, only played in the 4th and 5th dual matches of the spring season against Texas Tech and Omaha. Including the fall tour matches Kristof was 7-2 in singles matches this year. 3 sophomores and 2 freshman made up the balance of the roster. Freshman Vanja Hodzic was 15-13 in singles matches and freshman Alejandro Jacome was 13-14 in singles. Sophomores Luck Brack and Richey King along with freshman Ziwen Ju were a combined 9-43 in singles matches. Clearly HCDG has some work to do on the recruiting trail.

I guess will have to wait until next fall to see what we have with these young men and hopefully Kristof Minarik will be back and fully healthy next year.
