Last week the Shocker decathletes officially opened up the season but this week the rest of the team will be in action. Most of them will compete at the Arkansas Spring Invitational while the throwers will go to Emporia State. The Arkansas meet will have some very good competition and the weather looks great - hopefully it will be a good way for the Shockers to get their outdoor season rolling! Good luck Shocks!

Report on Shockers this weekend at Akansas, Emporia State and Friends:
Of particular note Shockers Todd McKown and Lawson Montgomery finished first and second respectively in the 110-meter hurdles. McKown grabbed first place in 13.99 and Montgomery took second place in 14.02. Both runners' times ranked among the nation's top-10 Saturday night.
A number of PR's and a school record set this weekend. -

The Shocker track team heads west this week. Most to Albuquerque and a few to Stanford:
An interesting tidbit from Coach Wise about the 110 meter hurdle race at Arkansas last week. Todd McKown and Lawson Montgomery finished 1-2 in that race defeating an Arkansas hurdler who had finished 5th in the NCAA National Indoor Championships earlier this year.

Junior Jake Wike moved up on the Wichita State all-time top-10 list with his personal best performance in the men's 1,500 meters at Stanford. Wike, from Derby, Kan., finished third in the fourth section of the event with a time of 3:46.99. The time ranks fourth all-time at Wichita State.
Tomas Cotter moved into the all-time WSU top 10 as well with his time of 8:51.88 in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday at Stanford. Cotter's time ranks sixth all-time at Wichita State and is one of the top 15 times in the nation this season. The junior from Dundalk, Ireland finished first in the second section of the event.Comment

In particular Shocker hurdlers Lawson Montgomery and Todd McKown continue their strong springs as they continue to push each other as they finished No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Montgomery won in 13.77. McKown finished second in 13.80. Both broke the stadium record, set in 1989 by Wyoming's Thom Garrison (13.95). Their times also ranked among the top 10 in the nation this season.
Last week Todd edged Lawson in their 1 - 2 finish at Arkansas.
Kyle Long finished second in the men's 400-meter hurdles (54.01).
The WSU men's 4x400-meter relay squad of Alex Reed, DJ Lindsay, Kyle Long and Dylan Hartnett finished second in 3:13.64.
Wichita State finished with the top three marks in the men's javelin. Brett Trudo won with a distance of 224-0. Shocker assistant coach John Hetzendorf, competing for the Shocker Track Club, threw 213-6. Jon Rizzo finished third in 211-3. Rizzo broke into the WSU top 10 with his mark.
Coach Rainbolt seems to have his guys tracking well was they work towards a strong MVC Championship run.

Thought I'd drop by and give my thoughts on the men's outdoor season so far ... it's been a very good one!
The men have really bounced back strong from the 3rd place MVC Indoor season. Coach Rainbolt usually builds his team for the outdoor season, even though they are always competitive indoor, and this season is no different.
You have to start with the dynamic hurdling duo of Todd McKown and Lawson Montgomery. Both these athletes are ranked in the top-20 in the nation and have traded 1-2 finishes and athlete of the week honors all year. They also run on the 4x1 with Dylan Hartnett who rules the 200 and 400 in the MVC right now. The most improved part of the team appears to be the middle distance with Jake Wike in the 800/1500, Tomas Cotter in the 1500/3000m steeplechase, Ryan Hocker, and Robbie Martinez. Those guys are going to help score some good points in the next few weeks. Brandon Childs leads the MVC in the high jump and should be a good scorer in the Long Jump. The Javelin crew is back at it with Brett Trudo leading the way. Unfortunately the NCAA champion from last year is in the Valley and is the favorite, but Trudo looks great along with newcomer Jon Rizzo. And of course the Decathlon guys look good as always with all kinds of point scoring potential.
This weekend there will be a great meet at Cessna Stadium on Saturday night! The Track-It Buster Invitational brings together some of the top non-BCS teams in the country, most notably Stephen F Austin, who came in and beat the Shocks by a couple points last year. The featured schedule runs from 6-9pm so come out and support this great Shocker team! It's only $3!Comment

The 2011-12 Shocker sports calendar is almost over but not quite. We still have a few Shocker athletes competing in the NCAA track and filed championships. For the Shocker men two athletes are still competing:
Sr. Brett Trudo advanced to the NCAA Championships for the third time in his career with his javelin throw Thursday in the event semifinals. His top throw of 233-2 in Austin gave him a sixth-place finish. Congrats to Brett and good luck at Drake in the Nationals.
Senior Dylan Hartnett advanced to Friday's quarterfinals in the men's 400-meter dash, finishing 26th overall in the first round of the event Thursday. He recorded a time of 47.41 in Austin to qualify to run again at 6 p.m. Friday. He has he work cut out for him to advance furher.
Seniors Lawson Montgomery (13.67) and Todd McKown (13.69) carry the West's No. 8 and No. 9 seeds, respectively, in the men's 110-meter hurdles. They finished second and third at the MVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships for all-conference honors. The first round of the 110-meter hurdles takes place at 5 p.m. Friday and the event quarterfinals at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
MVC champion Tomas Cotter, a junior, will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 8:50 p.m. Friday. Cotter's fastest time in the event this season was at the Stanford Invitational (8:51.88).

Lawson and Todd both advanced to the next round in the 100m hurdles as the field was cut in half form 54 to 27 runners.Looked like both finished 2nd in their respectvie heats. The top 3 finishers in each of Saturday's 3 heats plus the 3 next fastest times will move on to Nationals at Drake.
Cory Beenken did not move on. He missed qualifying for the next round by .05 second.

Dylan Hartnett did not make the top 12 needed to advance to Drake and his Shocker career has come to an end.
A very fine Shocker career indeed for the Dodge City product. Here's thanks to a great Shocker and best wishes for what I am confident will be a successful future.

Shocker Jr. Tomas Cotter finished 3rd in his 3,000 meter steeplchase race and his is moving on to compete in the NCAA National Meet at Drake.

Ring up two more Shockers heading to the NCAA National Championship finals at Drake as the dynamic hurdling duo of Todd McKown (Valley Center, KS) and Lawson Montgomery (Bennington, KS) each ran perhaps their best races of the year to qualify.
In heat 1 Todd ran an excellent 13.42 which was well below his 13.69 that had him seeded #9 coming into the West Preliminary rounds. I am guessing that is a PR for Todd as he finished 2nd in his heat.
Lawson made a great lean at the finish line to get 3rd in heat 2 in a very solid 13.63 which bettered his 13.67 mark that had him seeded 8th coming in.
