Shocker Wrestling was established in order to give Wichita State students the opportunity to compete in collegiate wrestling. Since there are not any division one wrestling programs in Kansas, it is our intention to fill the gap in Kansas Wrestling. Shocker wrestling gives students the opportunity to put school first and still be competitive college athletes. The team will begin competing in the fall of 2011 in the NCWA, but the majority of our schedule will include NCAA, NJCAA, and NAIA competition.

The 2 all-americans wrestled at good programs before coming to WSU. One wrestled at Missouri, the other at Labette CC.

Notice that it is NCWA Division II. Not NCAA Division II.

The NCWA is a club sport or recreational sport organization.

I doubt that WSU has any plans for it to be any more than that for the forseeable future due to financial/Title IX issues. Too bad because we actually have outstanding wrestling in Kansas that we export to top wrestling schools.

Nevertheless, congrats to the Coach and the team. They no doubt put some hard work into their wrestling.

Heard about the title about a week and a half ago on facebook, and thought the exact same thing...I had no clue we had wrestling. I didn't want to post that question on here and find out I was the only one who didn't know....

@martymoose: I don't think you are close to being alone. I was not aware of it.

Just for fun I looked up the list of Club sports at WSU:

20 different Sports Clubs. Not sure how many actually compete on a national level like wrestling, but I have to admit I had no idea that WSU had this many Sports Clubs.

So if we see a report that the Shockers have won a Dodgeball or Quidditch national championship we won't be surprised. I think Dodgeball is covered on ESPN8, The Ocho.
