Shockers Finish Second in Columbia Mo, Polhill Shines

Brock Polhill set a new career best with a second place individual finish, and Wichita State put together their best team outing of the 2022 season in a runner-up performance at the MU Tiger Invitational at The Club at Old Hawthorne on Tuesday.

Polhill (67-68-69—204) ended the tournament just one stroke back of Missouri's Jack Parker, who held on for the win with a par on 18 while Polhill carded a five. It was one of just three bogeys on the round for Polhill, who racked up 19 birdies over the course of 54 holes, the second-highest total in the 90-player field. The junior from Edmond, Okla., also eagled the par-five 10th on Monday's opening 18, leading to a 67 for the round that nearly matched his career-best 66 in Columbia a year ago. Polhill utilized his length off the tee to record the second best average score on Par 5s (4.33) ending the invitational at 8-under on Par-5s.

As a team, the Shockers piled up 65 birdies, trailing only Missouri's 73. The host Tigers (270-274-282—826, -38) rolled to the team title, finishing at 38-under to best the Shockers (288-272-292—852, -12) by 26 strokes. Wichita State held off Oral Roberts (286-279-292—857, -7) to secure second place, as only three teams finished the tournament below par.

Mostly mid-major competition in this one. Other than Mizzou there was Boston College out of the ACC and DePaul out of the Big East, not exactly noted for their golf.

The Shocks did finish 50 strokes ahead of former Valley foe Missouri State who finished last in the 17-team field at 389-over.

Last year the Shockers finished 4th in this tournament at 4-under.

Next up is the AAC Championship on April 22 to April 24. The Shocks finished 4th in the 8 team AAC field last year.

The Shocker men will be heading to Brooksville, FL (about 50 miles north of Tampa) for the AAC Men's Golf Championship at the Southern Hills Plantation Club (sounds pretty racist) this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is the same course where last year's AAC Championship was held.

Here are the final results form last year's tournament:

            FINAL TEAM STANDINGS
            1. USF - 847 (270-292-285, -17)
            2. SMU - 852 (287-286-279, -12)
            3. Cincinnati - 856 (289-292-275, -8)
            4. Wichita State - 865 (297-279-289, +1)
            T5. Memphis - 869 (285-292-292, +5)
            T5. UCF - 869 (288-293-288, +5)
            T5. East Carolina - 869 (287-290-292, +5)
            8. Temple - 901 (296-302-303, +37)

Hopefully, the Shocks will get off to a little better start this season. Last year's Tournament was actually pretty competitive among the top 7 teams with only Temple lagging way behind.

The Shocker lineup will have a different look this year with only juniors Brock Pohill and Dawson Lewis returning from the five-some that competed for the Shocks last year.

The stats on goshockers.com do not have any stats for the 5 tournaments they played this spring. I expect Pohill and Dawson will be joined by Redshirt Freshman Joe Bultman and true freshman Lucas Scheufler and MIchael Winslow. I have to say at this point I have no idea how this group will fare in this tournament. It's a relatively inexperienced group.

The Shocks have not played in any tournaments this year that included any fellow AAC members. Seems that competition they have faced for the most part has been mid-majors.

Kind of hard to be optimistic the way this year has gone for Shocker sports.

The 5 guys I mentioned above in by AAC Championship preview post are, in fact, the 5 playing for the Shockers this weekend. Brock Pohill, Dawson Lewis, Joe Bultman, Lewsi Sheufler and Michael Winslow.

The Shocks opened play on Friday with a 1-under par 287 good for a 4th place tie with UCF in the 9-team field. Houston is the leader after Round 1 with 10-under 278.

Dawson Lewis shot 70 (-2), Joe Bultman 71 (-1), Brock Pohil 70 (Even) and Lucas Scheufler 74 (+2). Michael Winslow had the throw away score at 3-over 75. Pretty consistent scoring from top to bottom.

The Shockers follow up the solid 1st round with a 2-under team score of 286 putting them at 3-under for the tournament and in a tie for 3rd with South Florida. SMU had a big day going 11-under as a team. Houston followed up their 10-under 1st round with a 6-under round 2. SMU leads at 17-under and Houston is closed behind at 13-under. So SMU and Houston have separated a bit frm the field. However, there are only 3 strikes separating WSU, USF, UCF and Cincy. I kind of doubt the winds in Florida are anywhere near the winds in Wichita this weekend.

The Shocks were not as consistent today form top to bottom but had a couple of very good rounds. Brock Pohill was low Shocker at 5-under 67 followed closely by Dawson Lewis at 4-under 68 in round 2. Brock and Dawson both are in the top 6 on the player leaderboard.

Michael Winslow shot a 3-over 75 and a 4-over 76. Lucas Schuefler had today's throw away score as things got away from him with a 11-over 83. Hopefully, he will shake that off and comeback much better on Sunday.

I don't believe the Shocks can catch either SMU or Houston but a 3rd place finish would be a very good result of this team I think. But their is a bit of a traffic jam at this point in the 3rd.through 6th spots as mentioned above. Even 7th place Memphis is only 8 shots out of 3rd heading into Sunday's final round.

The Shockers are having a bad day finishing up at the AAC Men's Golf Championship. No one has totally blown up, but none of the Shocks are playing really good either, especially in comparison to the rest of the field.

With just a handful of holes left to play the Shocks are the only team to shoot over par today at this point are 10 over par. The next worst scores on the day are Houston and Memphis at 1-under. Leader SMU is 11-under. Coming into the final round the Shockers were tied for 3rd with USF at 3-under. USF is currently at 14-under par on the day and in 2nd place. The Shocks are now 7-over par had have fallen to 7th place.

So the Shocks do, in fact, finish the day at 10-over par for the day and 7-over par for the Touranment after being tied for 3rd after the first 2 rounds. The finished ahead of only Temple and ECU.

The Shock were the only team to shoot over par today.

Freshman Michael Winslow had the best Shocker round today at 1-over 73. The other 4 guys all shot 3-over 75's. Good consistent scoring but on a day whenver everyone else was pretty much going low.

A pretty disappointing conclusion to the season for the Shocks, especially considering where they were positioned after the first 2 rounds and compared to how the competition scored today.
