    Shockers Win GCU Invitational Title

    https://goshockers.com/news/2021/3/1...nal-title.aspx

    Golfstat.com scoreboard: http://results.golfstat.com/public/l...team&tid=22168

Zac Owens and Marcus Wochner posted top-10 finishes and Wichita State blew past Grand Canyon and Eastern Michigan in Tuesday's final round to win the GCU Invitational.

The Shockers entered the day four strokes behind host GCU and three back of second-place EMU but made up eight shots on both to claim a victory in their season debut.

Wochner, a junior, is from Denmark via Odess (TX) CC.

This tournament included 16 teams, mostly mid-majors except maybe Creighton and the Bluejays finished in a tie for 9th18 strokes behind the Shokcs winning 10-over par team score. Drake finished 15th, 30 shots back.

In 2019 the Shocks finished last among the 10 team AAC Championship. I assume the AAC is down to 9 teams playing men's golf now with UConn moving to the Big East.

Shockers Place 2nd at Twin Oaks Invitational in Springfield, MO

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Helped by top-5 finishes from Marcus Wochner and Zac Owens, the Wichita State men's golf team continued its strong start to the 2021 season with a runner-up finish at the 18-team Twin Oaks Intercollegiate.

For the 2nd consecutive week the Shocks play well in a mid-major tournament finishing 2nd at 9-over, three shots behind the winner SIU-Edwardsville.

There were 6 MVC teams in this tournament so the Shocks proved they would still be at or near the top of the Valley. But the AAC is a much different animal.

This coming Sunday-Tuesday will be a much better measuring stick as the Shocks travel to The Hootie Intercollegiate at Bulls Bay in South Carolina. This tournament was last played in March 2019 with a 15-team filed including 12 teams from P-5 conferences.

Redshirt Soph Zac Owens and Jr. Marcus Wochner out of Denmark via Odessa (TX) CC continue to lead the way for the Shockers. Can another couple of guys step there games up to provide some depth.

Improved Shockers Eager to Test Themselves at Bulls Bay

      Scoreboard: https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/67898/

The Shocks played Round 1 on Sunday and so far the test is not going all that well. The Shocks finished at 8-over par but that places them 15th in the 16 team field better only than LaTech who is at 11-over par. The Shocks are 18 strokes behind the leader, Kent State, who had 4 of its 5 guys shooting below par. 7 of the 16 teams were under par after Round 1.

The Shocks played each of the final 2 rounds at 6-over to finish the tournament at 20-over. However, that was only good enough for a 15th place finish in the 16 team field. NC State was was the winner at 18-under, followed by Missouri at 16-under, with Auburn and Kent State tied for 3rd at 15-under. That was followed by 7 teams between 1-under and 7-over and then a group of 5 teams between 12-over and 33-over.

So would say the Shocks failed the test. Next Monday and Tuesday the Shocks head to Columbia, Missouri for the Missouri Tiger Collegiate. The field has not be announced.

Shocks head to Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday.at the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia. There 15 teams in the field. Mostly mid-majors outside of Missouri and K-State including 3 MVC teams.

The Shocks have not and will not play in a tournament that includes any fellow AAC members although that is not uncommon since joining the AAC. Not that it matters much since you are playing the course and yourself as much as paying an opponent.

The Shocks have fared well so far in their tow tournaments against mid-major competition but not so well in last weeks' Hootie Bay that was mostly teams from P-5 conferences.

Just don't have a real good measuring stick as to how the Shocks might stack up. In the last AAC Championship 2 years ago the Shocks finished last out of the 10 teams 12 shots behind (surprisingly) 9th place Houston. The Shocks finished 49 shots behind the winner, Memphis.

The only thing I can say for certain is that the Shocks will finish no worse than 9th this year since UConn has moved on to the Big East. At this point I see nothing to indicate they will do better than that.

        Final Results: http://results.golfstat.com/public/l...team&tid=22334

Did okay against the mid-majors but couldn'tstay with Missouri or Kansas State. Drake finished last 82 strokes behind 1st place Missouri.

The Shocks #1 player, Zac Owens, and #3 player, Dawson Lewis, did not have a good tournament especially in Round 3 where Zac was 9-over and Dawson was 13-over with Dawson's 85 being the throw away score.

The Shocks and 7 other AAC teams opened play today with the 1st round of 3 in the 2021 AAC Men's Golf Championship. Houston withdrew due to some Covid-19 issues. The tournament is being played at the Southern Hills Golf Club about 50 miles north of Tampa. The Shockers were seeded 5th going into the tournament.

On the bright side the Shockers Great Dane, So. Marcus Wochner, is tied for the individual lead at 6-under par. On the negative side none of the other Shocks played very well and the Shocks are in last the 8 team field at 9-over par and 1 shot behind 7th place Temple. However, USF has opened up a 15-shot lead over the field with a 18-under team score putting the Shocks 27 strokes off the pace. The 2 players tied with Shocker Marcus Wochner at 6-under for the individual lead are both from USF. USF has a 3rsd golfer at 4-under and the 4th and 5th golfer's were both 2-under on the day. Think USF has been driving up the road quite a bit this spring to get in practice rounds on this course. UCF is only 80 miles east for the course. In any case, you won't lose many college golf tournaments when your throw away score is 2 under par.

The Shocker men's golf team totally flipped the script in the 2nd round of the AAC Championship Tournament plus the rest of the field came back to them a bit as well.

After positing a 9-over in Round 1 that had the Shockers last among the 8 team field the Shockers shot a 9-under par score in Round 2 on a day when only SMU was able to notch a red number in addition ot the Shocks with a team score of 2-under.

South Florida after scorching the course with an 18-under team score in round 1 is still the leader but they were 4-over in round 2 and are not at 14-under. SMU is in second at 3-under and the Shocks have moved up from 8th to 3rd at even par which is 1 stroke ahead of ECU and Memphis.

Shocker sophomore Marcus Wochner followed up his 6-under 66 with a 2-under 70 and sits atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under par 3 strokes ahead of 2 USA players. Unlike yesterday, Wochner received a lot of help from his Shocker teammates in round 2. Sophomore Brock Pohill and 5th year senior Frank Thomas, a transfer from Southern Illinois, both posted 3-under par 67's, sophomore Zac Owens shot a 1-under 70 and sophomore Dawson Lewis had the throw away score at a decent 1-over 73. This latter group was a combined 6-under in today's 2nd round after combining to shoot 23-pver in Friday's 1st round for a 29 shot improvement. Not exactly sure how that happens but hopefully the Shocks have more of today's play in their bags.

They will be be starting today's final round at 8:30 AM EDT and will be playing in foursomes (instead of twosomes) due to the threat of inclement weather. With half the teams starting on No. 1 and half the teams starting on No. 10. The forecast I looked at doesn't look bad.

BTW, the exact name of the course they are playing on is the Southern Hills Plantation Country Club. Suprised there havn't been some protests over that. Maybe that's the inclement weather they are expecting.

Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club in Brooksville, FL is a Pete Dye course and named a Top 50 US Course by Golf Week. Call for tee times: 352-277-5000

The Shocks were unable to duplicate their hot play of Round 2 but they did manage a reasonably decent 1-over round to finish 4th in the AAC Men's Golf Championship.

USF finished at 17-under to win the Championship by 5 strokes over 9 strokes over Cincinnati. Places 4 through 7 were are relatively closing ranging from 1-over to the 3 teams behind the Shockers at 5-over. Only Temple struggled of the 8 teams in the tournament as they finished last at 37-over.

The Shocks have 4 of their 5 players in this tournament back next year. Marcus Wochner ended up in a 3-way tie for second at 8-over which was 3 shots behind the medalist, Albin Bergstrom of USF. Marcus had a double bogie on 14 that probably cost him sole possession of 2nd on the individual list.

Shocker Sophomore Marcus Wochner Named All-AAC

                  https://goshockers.com/news/2021/5/4/mens-golf-wochner-named-all-aac.aspx

                  Marcus Wochner
checked off another milestone Tuesday, becoming the first Wichita State men's golfer to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference's all-conference squad.

The sophomore from Holte, Denmark has been an impact addition for the Shockers this year after transferring from Odessa (Texas) Community College. He's posted top-10 finishes at four of WSU's six spring events, highlighted by a tie for second-place at last month's conference championship, and his 71.39 stroke average would be one of the five-lowest in program history.

Wochner will learn his postseason fate in less than 24 hours when the NCAA announces its individual at-large regional qualifiers. Wednesday's NCAA men's golf selection show airs live at 1 p.m. CT on the Golf Channel.

                  Congratulations Marcus.
