2019-20 Shocker Men's Golf

Dawson Lewis and Zac Owens bounced back in Round 2 shooting even par 71 and 1-over 72, respectivley. Brock Polhill conintued his solid play with a 1-under 70 and leads the Shocks at 1-over par 143 after 2 rounds. Brock may be on his way to his best finish as a sophomore with one more good round tomorrow. Unfortunately, Greyson Wallace at 6-over and Joe Bultman at 7-over could not sustain their level of play from Round 1. Still the Shocks improved by 5 strokes from Round 1 and are in 9th place at 17 over 585.

The Shocks shot their poorest round of the Tournament in the final round at 18-over 302 to finish at 35-over 887. The lone exception was So. Zac Owens who shot the low round of the day not only for the Shockers but in the tournament field at 4-under 67. Unfortunatley, the other 4 Shocks all struggled in the final round at +6, +8, +8 and +9.

Unlike their last outing when they won the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate where the goes where pretty consistent throughout the lineup through all 3 rounds the Shocks were quite a bit more inconsistent at this tournament from round-to-round and throughout the lineup.

The AAC Schools in this tournament who will return to this course next spring for the AAC Championship finished as follows:

T3. USF +2
T3. Memphis +2
T5. Houston +12
T5. ECU +12
8. UCF +24
10. WSU +35
T13. Temple +50

Not playing in this tournament was AAC defending champion SMU, and Cincinnati and UConn who finished tied for 7th last year in the AAC Championship. The Shocks finished 6th in the AAC Championship last year. Houston finished 9th and ECU finished last in last year's AAC Championship so they appear to have made some real progress. Temple finished 1 stroke ahead of the Shocks last year.

The Shocks have some work to do if they are going to equal or exceed last year's 6th place finish in the AAC. I think our guys have the ability to play well in any given round but they need to show they can do that consistently as a team over a full 3 rounds like they did ant the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. Hopefully, getting experience on this course will help them come next spring.

Coach Easterling Inks Talented Trio

The signing of these 3 players by Coach Easterling is interesting in a couple of ways.

First is that it includes two Juco transfers. The Shocks also added a Juco transfer last year. So that is 3 Jucos in 2 years. That seems to be a a different approach under Coach Easterling. I don't recall recruiting Juco players was a very common practice under Grier Jones. That doesn't make it bad. Just different. We will see how it works out.

The other interesting things is that the Shocks currently have 8 players on their roster. No seniors, 1 junior, 4 sophomores and 3 freshman. Coach Easterling has 4.5 scholarships to divvy up.

If everyone returns the Shocks will have a roster of 11 payers next year, 7 of whom would be in the junior class.

I wondered if one of the juco players would be from HutchCC. They have performed very well the past few years.
