The Shocks finished up at The Jackrabbit with a rather ho-hum effort matching their Round 1 score of 13-over to finish at 30-over and in a 9th place tie with Indian Hills CC in a 13 team field. The Shocks finished 49 strokes behind the winner who will go unnamed. UCF finished in 2nd place 10 strokes back.

Zac Owens was the only Shocker close to par today with a 1-over 73. Clearly the Shocks have some work to do.

The Shocks finished off their fall season today at the Herb Wimberly Invitational hosted by New Mexico state with what I would characerize as a whimper. The Shocks finished 9th in pretty mediocre field of 11 teams with the Shock finishing 38 strokes behind winner New Mexico State and finishing 2 strokes behind Odessa College, the only JUCO in the field.

The Shocks finished 10th (dead last) in the AAC Championship last year and at this point they aren't showing much to think that will change this coming spring.

Indications are that men's golf perhaps was the weakest sport in the MVC relative to the AAC as the Shocks regularly competed for MVC Championships. Fortunately, whether golf finishes 1st or last it produces pretty much the same revenue.

Hopefully, over time maybe the Shocks can climb into the middle of the AAC pack. However, golf is probably a sport where membership in the AAC doesn't do much for your recruiting.

Men's Golf Adds All-State Player on National Signing Day




Bultman, a native of Kansas City, Kan., is a three-time Junior PGA Championship participant and is a three-time All-State selection at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The two-time Kansas City Golf Association Junior Player of the Year will join the Shockers with a loaded resume. Bultman was the Sunflower League individual champion last season while earning his third first team all-league honor in the process.

After coming in 11th in the 2018 KSHSAA 6A state championship, Bultman earned first team All-State. His accomplished junior season allowed him to collect more accolades, winning the Kansas Golf Coaches Association Player of the Year award and the Kenneth Smith Award, given to the top golfer in the Kansas City area, in 2018.

With two seniors on the roster this year leading the way (Yannik Emmert and Adrien Michellod) the Shocks will probably be on the young side next year with no seniors. It will be interesting to see how the 3 Freshman on this years roster (Brock Polhill, Dawson Lewis and Grayson Wallace develop) along with Joe Bultman.

Zac Owens, a sophomore this year, would appear to be the guy to lead the team next year.

Looks like the Shockers have added Lake Leroux to the roster for next year. Leroux is a sophomore at Hutch Juco this year and will join the Shocker next fall. Leroux is the son of Mizzou head men's golf coach Mark Leroux.

I can't find much in the way of stats or accomplishments for Lake. He did tie Shocker sophomore Palmer Hays for 47th place at The Jackrabbit Invite played Sep 30 - Oct 2 this past fall with a score of 231 (per round stroke average of 77). Just okay but needs to improve to move the needle for the Shocks.

The Shocker men did not fare well at all in their opening tournament of the "Winter/Spring" season at the Farms Invitational in Rancho Sante Fe, California. On Monday play was halted midway through the 2nd round due to darkness. The remainder of Round 2 and Round 3 were played on Tuesday.

Yannik Emmert, Zac Owens and Brock Polhill were unable to finish the third round due to team travel. In fact, no scores were recorded for them.

Senior Adrian Michellod did finish all 3-rounds at a very poor 38-over 254 which was next to last in the individual standings. His worst 4-holes 16-over par.

Freshman Dawson Lewis also finished all 3-rounds and shot 22-over with scores of 79-84-75 = 238

In his 2 rounds Freshman Brock Polhill shot 19-over with scores of 78-85 = 163. 7 strokes of that overage was on 2 holes.

Sophomore Zac Owens and Senior Yannick Emmert fared a bit better in their 2 rounds:

Zac was 8-over par shooting 80-72 for 152. 3 double bogeys on the back 9 of Round 1 hurt Zac's opening round.

Yannick was 5-over par with a 76-73 for 149. A 9 on the Par 5 No. 3 hole in Round 1 hurt him.

I think the Shocks most likely would have finished no better than 9th in the 10 team filed beating only San Diego.

#17 ranked Cal won the Tournament at 21 ran away with the tournament outdistancing 2nd place Loyola Maymount by 36 strokes and last place San Diego by 113 strokes.

Hopefully, this is mostly reflective of the Shocks not having much in the way of decent weather to practice in and they will get better as the weather warms.

The Shocker men have their 2nd poor showing of the early "spring" season as the finished 15th out of 15 teams in the Ragin' Cajun Louisiana Classic in Lafayette, LA on Monday and Tuesday.

The was only one P-5 Conference team in the field. That was Illinois who finished 2nd, 7 shots behind McNeese State. the remainder of the field were mid-majors.

The Shock shot 913, 50 shots behind McNeese State.

Again i hope this is mostly reflective of the Shocks not having much in the way of decent weather to practice in but they were not the only cold-weather school participating. In addition to Illinois there was Kent State (4th at 881), UMKC (5th at 883) and Toledo (12th at 901).

We will see what happens when the weather warms up I guess.

I guess the Shocks were a little better this weekend at the GCU Invitational at the par 71 GCU Championship Golf Course in Phoenix. It appears this course was pretty amenable to good scoring as UMKC won the tournament with a 23-under par score of 829. UT-Rio Grande Valley was 9 under while UTEP and Mizzou were 8-under. The Shocks finished 10th at 7-over 859 but were 3-under heading into the final round. There final round was their worst round as the shot 281-284-294.

Senior Yannik Emmert lead the Shocks shooting 67-68-73 = 206 to finish 5-under par in tied for 7th in the individual standings.

The issue for the Shockers is do they have enough depth as a team especially in the 4th and 5th slots.

The Shocks continue to be burdened by weak play in the #4 and #5 slots at the Furman Invitational finishing 16 our to 21 teams at 46-over par. That was 53 shots behind winner Coastal Carolina and 45 shots behind host Furman. It doesn't look like the Shocker men will be very competitive this year. Cincinnati was 13th only 5 shots ahead of the Shockers.

Owens Finishes Tied for Second at Bayou City Collegiate

Sophomore Zac Owens finished with a 4-under 69-72-71 = 212 to finish 2nd, 1 shot behind the medalist, at the Bayou City Collegiate in Houston.

Senior Yannik Emmert finished in a tie for 22nd but was hurt by a 2nd round 78 sandwiched by two rounds of 71 in the 1st and 3rd rounds for a 54-hole total of 220.

Unfortunately, the rest of the team was of little assistance with Dawson Lewis and Brock Polhill each shooting 15-over 231 and Palmer Hays skied to a 19-over 235 after shooting even par in Round 1 and the Shocks finished 10th in the 14 team field.

Next up for the Shocks is the AAC Championships at Palm Harbor, Florida this coming Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

As was the case with the Shocker women it does not appear as if the Shocker men have the depth to be much of a factor. Last year the Shocks finished 10th (last among the 10 AAC teams that sponsor men's golf -- Tulane and Tulsa don't have men's golf). Anything better than 10th this year would probably be considered a success.

Solid start at the AAC Championships for the Shocks #1 and #2 players as Sr. Yannick Emmert finished Round 1 with a 1-under 70 and is tied for 3rd inddividually and So. Zac Owens carded an even par 71 and is tied for 7th individually.

The concern I had coming in was would the supporting cast of 3 freshman at the #3, #4 and #5 slots provide enough scoring to keep the Shocks in it. This trio contributed a 75 and a pair of 76's today and the Shocks finished at 8-over using their top 4 scores. That's good for 6th place in the 10 team field and is only 1 shot behind Temple and UCF and 2 shots behiind USF. The Shocks trail the leaders, SMU, by 7 shots. USF had an eagle 2 and and eagle 3 on their scorecards.

If Yannick and Zac can continue to hang around par and if we can get perhaps 73 and a 74 from 2 of the 3 freshman in each of the final 2 rounds the Shocks might have decent shot at a top 5 finish.

The Shocks were paired with Temple players today and started on the back 9. In round 2 they will be paired with UCF and will start on the front 9.

In Round 1, starting on the 10th hole the Shocks were even par after 9 holes so the were 8-over on their final 9 holes (the courses front 9). Freshman Grayson Wallace actually had a very good 1-over round going through his 1st 15 holes. But a triple-bogey and a bogey on the next two holes before finishing with a par hurt him and the Shocks.

The Shocks finished 10th last year with 50 shots out of the lead on the same Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida.

The Shocks stumbled very badly in round 2 today. At this point the Shocks and UCF are the only two teams that have finished. UCF started the daty1 stroke ahead of the Shockers. At the the end of Round 2 the Shocks trail UCF by 17 strokes.

After Round 1 I said that I thought Yannick Emmert and Zac Owen needed to continue to hang around par and if we can get perhaps 73 and a 74 from 2 of the 3 freshman in each of the final 2 rounds the Shocks might have decent shot at a top 5 finish. Unfortunately that did not happen. Only Yannick had a decent round to today at 2-over 73 although still 3 shots off his round 1 70. Zac balloned to a 7-over par 78 and the 3 freshman shot 77, 77 and 79.

With that the Shocks have ballooned from 8-over after Round 1 to 29-over after Round 2 and are currently sitting dead last in 19th place. There are a couple of teams ahead the Shocks still on the course who could drop back to the level of the Shocks but, in any case, definitely not a good day for the Shocks.

Update:

The 2nd Round is now complete with Memphis leading at even par and SMU in the hunt at 6-over. The Shockers' struggles today apparently were not due to tougher conditions or course setup. 6 of the 10 teams shot lower scores in Round 2 than they did in Round 1. Of the 4 teams who shot higher scores SMU was 4 strokes higher in Round 2, South Florida was 3 strokes higher, Houston was 1 stroke higher and the Shocks were 13 strokes higher.

The final round for the Shocks in the AAC Championships looked very much like Round 2 as they finished with a final round 304 (vs 305 in Round 2).

Again Sr. Yannick Emmert was solid with a 1-over 72 and currently tied for 10th although it's possible he could be pushed out of a top 10 finish by some golfers still on the course. But a very solid finish to Yannick's Shocker career. As in Round 2 none of the other Shocker golfers were able to step up. Shooting +5, +6, +8 and +9 on today's round with all 4 guys finishing in the bottom 10 in the 50 man field.

There are still 4 teams left on the course at this point but the Shocks have last place (10th) wrapped up lock, stock and barrel and by a considerable margin at 49-over par as they are 12 shots behind 9th place Houston who is finished. After a pretty decent 1st round the Shocks only improved their last place team score from last year by 1 stroke. Has to be pretty disappointing for the team.

On a positive note Sr. Yannick Emmert did finish in the Top 10. His 2-over par 70-73-72 = 215 gave him sole possession of 9th place. That's nice way to cap off his Shocker career.
