2018-19 Annual Grier Jones Fundraiser set.

  • #2
Looks like the lineup is set for the Shocks first event of the year, the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in Hutnington, West Virginia starting tomorrow. Looks like the Shocks are going with 2 seniors (Yannik Emmert & Adrien Michellod), sophomore (Zac Owens) and 2 freshmen (Brock Polhill and Dawson Lewis).

    Judd Easterling‏ @JuddEasterling

After 6 rounds of Q school the @GoShockersMGLF lineup is set for the first event. 1. @yannikE96 2. @polhill17 3. @MichellodAdrien 4. @DawsonL1999 5. @zac_owens First business trip of the year starts Saturday.

    7:05 AM - 4 Sep 2018

A 15 team field. No P-5 programs and no other AAC schools. Jim Schaus' Ohio squad will be in the tournament ..

Rain this afternoon and through the night in Huntington but Monday and Tuesday don't look too bad if the course doesn't get too soaked. Cloudy and cool on Monday and Tuesday with high temps in the 70's and high humidity and low winds. Schedule could be impacted. Sounds like soft and perhaps a bit soggy conditions on the course.

The Wichita State men's golf team opens the 2018-19 season with the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Sept. 10-11, held at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W.V.

    Tournament Scoring.

Not exactly sure what kind of havoc the weather has created with this tournament but one thing is clear. This golf course is receptive to low scoring (at least today it was).

Shocker Sr. Adrien Michellod deserves a Michelob after recording a stellar 7-under par 64. Sophomore ZacOwens, in his collegiate debut, wasn't far behind with a 5-birdie, 13 par 66.

Senior Yannik Emmert contributed a solid 3-under 68 offsetting his only bogey with an eagle 3.

Two Freshmen joining Zac in making their collegiate debuts were solid. Dawson Lewis recorded a 3 birdie, 1 bogey, 14 par effort for a 2-under 69 and Brock Polhill had the throw away score with an even par 71 recording 1 birdie, 1 bogey and 16 pars.

Perhaps it is largely attributable to the course and conditions but throwing out an even par score is pretty rare.

So as a team the Shocks are in the clubhouse at 17-under giving them a 10-stroke lead over 2nd place VCU. 8 of the 15 teams were under par today.

Looks like Adrien will have a 2-stroke lead for medaliist honors over teammate Zac Owens and 3 strokes over 4 other guys at the end of Round 1.

The Wichita State men's golf team hit the ground running in the opening round of their 2018-19 season, putting themselves out in first place shooting 17 under par in the first round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invite.

The Shocks were not nearly as sharp today as they were on Monday but it looks like they will cruise to the win in the rain-shortened Joe Fegaines/Marshall Invitational.

Freshman Brock Polhill struggled over his last 10 holes with 3 double bogeys and 2 bogeys to finish at 6-over leaving it up to his 4 teammates to carry the load.

Senior Adrien Michellod who blistered the course with a 64 on Monday only managed a 2-over 73 today and as a result he fell out of the lead for medalist honors.

Freshman Dawson Lewis contributed his 2nd consecutive solid round with a 71.

Senior Yannik Emmert, after bogeying 2 of his 1st 5 holes, recovered to finish at a 1-under 70.

Sophomore Zac Owens overcame 3 bogeys by carding 6 birdies and lead the Shocks today with a 3-under 68 which when combined with his 66 in Round 1 earns Zac medalist honors to go along with a team win in his first collegiate outing.

Eastern Kentucky made up 5 strokes on the Shocks today but that was not nearly enough to catch the Shocks as they bring home the winner's trophy finishing at 19-under with Eastern Kentucky 6 strokes back at 13-under.

Perhaps not the strongest field plus the tournament was shortened to 2 rounds but still a nice start for this year's Shocker team. The Shocks tied for 7th in this tournament last year.

            Congrats guys.

            :victorious:

With all due respect to long-time Shocker head man Grier Jones I wonder if the addition of Judd Easterling to the Shocks coaching staff and his quick ascendance to Associate Head Coach may be adding some positive impact on the men's golf program. Time will tell but Judd seems to bring a very positive attitude to work.

May not have been quite as tough as MacDonald based on the scores the Shocks and others posted this weekend.

Saw the Shocks playing a practice round at MacDonald on Labor Day morning. I guess that had them well prepared!

The Shocks have been unable to duplicate their play from last weeks 2-round victory in the Marshall Invitational at this weeks Ram Masters Invitational in Ft. Collins. In a tournament that the Shocks won in 2012 and placed in the top 5 in 4 of the last 6 years the Shocks are off to a poor start.

After Round 1 the Shocks were tied for 11th at 12-over par 12 shots behind leader Illinois State. After 6 holes in Round 2 the Shocks are now 16-over and have fallen to a tie for 13th in the 17 team field.

Sr. Yannick Emmert played well in round one with a 1-under par 69 as he had 3 birdies and 2 bogies. But the rest of the guys racked up 21 bogeys and 3 double bogeys. Adrien Michiellod was 3-over in Round 1, So. Zac Owens, who was the medalist last week, was 6-over in Round 1, Fr. Brock Polhill was 4-over and Fr. Dawson Lewis was 7-over.

After 6 holes in Round 2 the Shocks appear to be on a similar path in Round 2.+

Yannick Emmert having a colorful round so far in Round 2. He is 1 par in his 1st 8 holes and is at even par. He has 4 birdies, 2 bogeys and a double bogey on the other 7 holes.

The Shocks have righted the ship somewhat through the middle rounds of Round 2. The Shocks started play on #6, #7, #&, #8 and #8 and are now thorugh the back nine. In Round 1 the 5 guys shot 19-over combined on the back 9 (15-over by the 4 guys who counted in the socring in Round 1). In Round 2 the 5 guys combined to shoot 6-over.

The Shocks completed a nice reversal over the last 12 holes of Round 2 to finish at even par for the Round. Colorado State is pulling away with a 15-under par round 2 to take a 12 shot lead over Illinois State.

The Shocks are well back at 12-over but have moved up to 6th place and have a shot at a top 5 finish with a good round tomorrow.

The 2 Shocker freshmen are struggling a bit early in the final round today. We need one of them to settle down. Shocks currently in 7th.

Brock Polhill did get his round stabilized although he had his ups and downs but he did shoot even par over the fnal 13 holes. However, Sr. Adrien Michellod's round go away form his has he was 5-over on the back nine.

Overall the scores today would indicate the pin placements today were tougher to get at than they were yesterday. For example, the tournament winner, Colorado State was 14 under in Round 2 and they shot 9-over today.

Zac Owens had a solid 1-under round. Yannik Emmert was even par. Brock was 3-over. and Adriend and Fr. Dawson Lewis were 6-over.

Overal the Shocks were 11-over in Round 3 and 23-over for the Tournament. The 12-over 1st round was probably the downfall becuase the course could more easily be had yesterday. The finished in 7th place in the field of 17 teams.

Probably a tougher course and a tougher field this week. I suspect distance and spin control at altitude requires some getting used to as well.

The Shockers opened play at the Dunes Course at the Prairie Club today which is 17 miles SW of the closest town which is Valentine (pop. 2,800) in far North Central Nebraska. I guess the course is kind of like Prairie Dunes in Hutch except with even fewer trees. Very, very few trees. This certainly fits the definition of in the middle of nowhere.

That said the Shockers found the course, which was desgined by Tom Lehman and Chris Brands, plenty challenging. The Shocks shot 75-75-75-76 for a 13-over 301 which is 20 storkes behind leader and fellow AAC member UCF at 7-under. Fr. Lewis Dawson had the throw away score of 83 as he really struggled including a snowman on the par 4 ninth. The Shocks are in 9th place out of 13 teams. They trail Indian Hills CC by 1 shot and lead Hutchinson CC by 2 shots. Hopefully, we at least finished better than the 2 Jucos in the field. Round 2 on Monday and Round 3 on Tuesday.

The Shocks showed solid improvement in Round 2 with a 4-over par team score which was 9 strokes better than their Round 1 score. However, it was only good enough to 1 spot from 9th to 8th in the 13 team field. SIU-Edwardsville and Indian Hill CC trails the Shocks by 2 strokes. The Shocks have shot at a top 5 finish but they will need to play well and will probably need a bit of help for that to happen.

Shocker seniors Yannik Emmert and Adrein Michellod are leading the way for the Shocks. Yannik bogeyed his last hole today but still shot a 3-under 69 while Adrien shot a 2-under 70. After two rounds they are both at 1-over and tied for 12th individually.

Sophomore Zac Owens bogeyed 4 of his last 5 holes to end at 4-over in Round 2 and is 7-over overall. Sophomore Palmer Hays was 4-over after his opening 9 but shot only 1-over (despite a double bogey) on the back 9 to finish at 77.

Freshman Dawson Lewis was 6-over on the day which was a significantly better than is 11-over score in Round 1 but he still had the days throw away score.
