  • MVC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships

As a suprise to some, yesterday the Shockers were picked to win the MVC Outdoor title in the pre-meet coaches poll. After finishing 3rd indoor it appears this team has rebounded nicely and is in position to battle for the top spot along with the usual suspects SIU (picked 2nd), UNI and Indiana State (Indoor champs).

Some big events start Friday for the Shockers with the Javelin and Decathlon. The meet runs through Sunday at UNI.

    Good luck Shocks!

'74, what kind of coverage will be available?

I see the Shocks swept the MVC Track Athletes of the Week honors this week.

Montgomery, a Junior from Bennington, Kansas, who was third in the 110m hurdles prelims with a then personal best time of 13.99, bested that mark easily in the finals with the second best time in Shocker history of 13.70. Montgomery's time places him atop the Missouri Valley Conference while also sliding him into 12th in the NCAA West region.

Looking for Lawson to contribute important points this weekend at the MVC Outdoor Championship. As I've mentioned before I really like the quality and depth of Kansas born and raised athletes on our track & field teams.

        WuDrWu,

Not sure how the coverage from UNI will be but there will be a blog updated by the WSU sports information office here: http://shockertrack.blogspot.com/

Usually there are live results available from the host school but I'm not sure how reliable they are since I've never been there for an outdoor meet. I doubt there will be any online video available but if I hear of anything I will update it here.

Should be an exciting weekend, let's hope the Shockers bring back 2 BIG trophies!

Just saw UNI put up a Championships Central page and it does have a link for Live Video. When you click on the link it looks like they will show Saturday starting at 3pm and Sunday starting at 11am, and it says it will not include audio commentary.

Don't know how good of video it will be but I guess it's better than nothing!

Here's the link to the championships page -- http://www.unipanthers.com/sports/c-...or-champs.html

The WSU men hold down positions 1,2,4,6,7 & 8 going into the final Day 1 event, the 400.

UNI star Daniel Gooris appears to be back to his A form and should challenge for the title with a big vault tomorrow. 'Slup needs a good time in the 400 and again in the hurdles leading off tomorrow to create enough space to hold off Gooris in the vault and throwing events. Currently he leads teammate Jordan Zerr by 151 points and Gooris by 297 points.

Action the rest of the day includes both men and women Javelin; M & W Hammer (the women's hammer concluded with no points for the Shocks) and the women's vault as well as the highly anticipated men's and women's 10k.

Great article in the Eagle today regarding the strength of the Shocks in the multi events and how Coach 'Bolt has built this track program with that as a foundation:

With day one in the books, and 4 final events of 21 - it appears this is going to be just like the indoor championship ... down to the wire. The Shockers are in it but it will be a battle til the end of Sunday.

If you project out the meet, WSU ends up with 187 pts with SIU 2nd with 179. UNI is close as well with 163 and Indiana St has 148. Illinois St (88) and Drake (48) don't appear to be in the team battle.

The Shocks held form today but SIU moved up a little with their big finish in the 10k. Tomorrow is a big day for WSU with the Decathlon, Long Jump, High Jump, and steeplechase finals as well as all the prelims in the sprints.

Keep up the good work Shocks!

Thanks as always for the update '74. Can you tell us a couple of events to look at tomorrow that should be telling for either how well we have to do, or where we might make inroads against one of the other contenders?

The Shockers are projected for 30 points in the Decathlon, 22 in the Long Jump, 12 in the High Jump, 8 in the steeplechase and 2 in the Shot Put. An obviously they need to advance folks through most of the prelims for Sunday.

Comparitively SIU is up for 12 in the Shot, 10 in the steeple, and 4 in the Long Jump with 0 in both the Decathlon and High Jump.

                        For UNI: Dec 9, HJ 9, SP 17, steeple 1, LJ 0.

Shocker decathlete Krzysztof Slupkowski expanded his lead with the best time in the 110 hurdles this morning.

UNI star Daniel Gooris however posted the 2nd best time and will make a run at Slup before the day is out.

This will be a fantastic event.

                          Edit:

Gooris had a very good discus and picked up 100 points on Slup and almost 200 on Jordan Zerr, overtaking him in the overall standings and now trails only Krzysztof by a diminishing 265 points. Still a big lead, but Gooris is a fabulous vaulter and will pick up big points there.

I get the feeling they aren't contesting the vault at this time due to the horrible conditions in central crapville.

There have been no updates for some time.

Vault results are in, and Gooris goes for an incredible 16-8 and 3/4 (or 5.10M for all you Euros out there) and gets 941 points for his efforts.

'Slup finishes 2nd but at a height of just 14-9. With his 760 points, his lead is down to a mere 84 points.
