The only advantage of having Stutz available would be in the rotation and I think that would have counteracted any scoring problems we might have faced.
Last season, when Stutz was in the game, the opponents scored 836 and WSU scored 959 points, so Garrett was a plus 123. That was 5th best on the team, despite having seven other players play more minutes than he. He was also 5th best when converting the +/- to a 40-minute game.

IMHO, Stutz can look very bad once or twice a game and our memories focus on those occasions. He makes some very good plays as well, but those aren't as memorable (nooo fancy blocks, just standing there keeping the ball out of the basket). How many times when he has looked bad was he helping on someone else's assignment? How many times when he helps out like that does it work out for WSU's benefit?

I sure wish I had the ability to do the plus/minus this season, because I'd bet YOUR HOUSE that Garrett is doing better this year than last year. To indicate his improvement during last season, while his per 40 plus minus decreased from 11.9 to 5.4 respectively for the first 17 games and the last 18 games, the team's corresponding numbers decreased from 14.1 to 1.4.
That shows Garrett was performing less than the team in the first 17 games and 4.0 better than the team in the last 18 games.
Sometimes in making points in regard to a team or player statistical trends and other stat-based information can be a hinderance in making a point. I know because I am guilty of it at times.

"How many times when he has looked bad was he helping on someone else's assignment?" - All other bigs are in the same boat and generally do a better job than Garrett. Let's be honest, Garrett looks like "Lurch" when being the last line of defense. He rarely attempts to block the shot, but stands with his arms in the air and looking like he's just been told by the sherrif to "reach for the sky son."

Just keep in mind when doing the analytical commentary, who is on the court with Garrett at the time can certainly skew what the real picture is. Don't get me wrong, I like Garrett, however his ceiling is much less than what we thought initially. He is an asset to the team, but in very much moderation.
Yes, it can. at least lately, Garrett has been playing with the 2nd teamers more than the starters. Granted we have depth, but defensively I believe the starters are the better group. The more the others on the floor contain their man, the less Garrett has to help out. But basketball is a TEAM sport and that is why I uses the TEAM stats above.

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

Garrett has been less effective in help defense on drives by guards than some of our other big men, but he has been very good about defending post players.

One problem with him being out for Drake is how well he handled Van Deest in Wichita. He consistently pushed him out of good post-up position and most of the points Van Deest scored were against JT not Garrett.

I'm glad the injury is no worse, too. I am worried this will be a setback in his development, which is exactly what he doesn't need.

I'm being only partially facetious when I say this, but I thought we didn't have a 1st or 2nd team, both are a toss of the coin. But again, Garrett isn't helping out any more than Durley, Blair or Ellis is. My point is that once Garrett is the last line of defense, he looks like the ground guy on the tarmac at the airport with his hands above his head waving the plane in.

I agree with Hatter in that when Garrett is posed with an adaquite matchup, his post defense has improved.

Maybe it could be an opportunity for EO to demonstrate his enforcer skills... 8)

I'm glad to hear Garrett's injury doesn't involve any structural damage and hopefully the staff can choose his minutes carefully and get him back to 100% soon. He has definitely overcome most of his early struggles on offense and we'll need the big fella for the stretch run.

                  Get well, Garrett!
